WEBTOON - A Bad Website With a Few Good Comics.

I don't like WEBTOON.

I don't like their terrible youtube ads. I don't like their strictly enforced phone-formatted layouts. I don't like their extremely popular comics about People with severe emotional issues failing to be in a functional relationship that all seem to drag out to eternity.

I tried reading That one comic about The Greek Gods but they had their shit set up like modern times and The God of death was down bad for a 19 year old. I think the best way to describe that is a PG-13 Version of Beany Tuesday's bit about the least sexy porno on earth.

Then I tried reading that one that's constantly advertised on youtube about the guy who's not dating but totally dating an alien. Basically the exact same as the greek gods one except it kept drawing attention to the fact that it couldn't call a Nintendo a Nintendo.

Then I tried reading THE BOXER and holy shit I have a new favorite comic of all time. How the fuck did this end up on this site? Like 99 percent of the stuff on here is overwrought romances and plausibly deniably horny gag comics? HOW THE FUCK DID THIS HAPPEN?!?

I seriously can't say enough good things about it. I love how the art manages to consistently make two shirtless dudes throwing hands look so abstract and yet so real. I love how it the leadup to each round takes a deep dive into the opponent's life and motivations to give us an idea of why all these sweaty weirdos HAVE to march into a ring and get the shit beaten out of them for a screaming crowd. I love how, at the end of the main story it just drops all pretext in favor of full blown "I know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards." It's just a fucking great sports comic that's secretly a fucking great fight comic that genuinely moved me.

I don't think the TT public is gonna love it like I love it. Honestly I think a lot of you might hate it. But I loved it, and I needed to say it.

Use this thread to tell us the one thing on WEBTOON you didn't hate.

(they/them)
Cursed Princess Club plays with a Disney-ish pastiche to depict the world's secret biggest cinnamon roll on her journey toward true love self-worth.

Your Throne is like Revolutionary Girl Utena, except they're both secretly Anthy (but also both secretly Utena) (granted that was the point of Utena in the first place). Also the body swap episode just keeps going.

Mage & Demon Queen is gay. gaaaaaaaay

oops that was three things I didn't hate, sorry

Oh no I read all of Last Human and the last update was in December and I need more.

@Violentvixen do you know is the comic covering the same stuff as the book or like a prequel or side story or what? Though, either way, want more comic.

Good stuff on Webtoon? I recommend Punderworld by Linda Sejic, wife of Stjepan Sejic, the guy who wrote and drew Talking Time's favorite comic about bondage loving lesbians Sunstone.

it's about how Hades and Persephone fell in love, good stuff.

I know! The pages seem to be getting more complex so hoping it's just slow complicated art and that nothing happened.

I think the author has only said it's a "separate story", nothing more specific. If you're debating whether or not to read the book don't hold off because of the comic. I read the book first and it gets slow for a chunk but overall I do recommend it.

Just wanted to second the CPC. It's one of my favorites.

Only other comic I read on the regular that's not on the list here is Muted. I think its run is almost over too if you want to binge the whole thing in one go.

So You're Raising a Warrior is one of my current favorites. Ell is the first guardian of the Demon Lord and can't wait to be killed by the hero so he can enjoy his retirement. Unfortunately, the hero is an idiot that went straight for the Demon Lord and got himself and two of his party killed. Lafi, the mage, is pregnant with the hero's son, so she enters a contract with Ell for him to raise baby Dino and get offed by him. It's both a family comedy and a fantasy!

Hey thanks for this rec. It looks like it HAS wrapped up and I basically shotgunned the entire thing in a couple days. Enjoyed it.

New page! And a very complicated looking one, yowza. So many robots to draw...

Hooray!
Of course, another huge cliffhanger, only slightly less literal than the last...

BEAT, I just want you to know that I read the entirety of The Boxer and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Although it does get a bit ridiculous how every character's backstory is somehow even more tragic than the last.

After finding out that Heartstopper, the show, was based on a webcomic from this site I binged that one too, today. It's super queer, and is also really positive, while talking about all kinds of issues (mainly queer ones, like coming out, not coming out, bullying, etc..., but also non-queer ones, like anorexia, or that it is ok to still be angry at a bully, even after they apologized and changed their ways). I found it very heartwarming, and, like with the show, I love how there are so many supportive characters, and that 80% or so of the cast are queer, in some way. It's also very sweet, in that there is no constant drama, because people don't listen to each other, or something.

Reviving this to just say THE BOXER's spinoff chapters about normal fighters at non-godlike levels is some really gripping stuff.

I didn't expect to actually care about the asshole bully from the introduction but holy shit I am hooked.

My girlfriend has been reading these and let me just inform you that there are also more in-universe novels if that's something you want.

My girlfriend basically begged me to read Blades of Furry and you know what? It's pretty dang good! It's an extremely queer story of furries who partake in a sport that is half figure skating, half UFC. Like, you literally spend the first minute of the round doing triple axles and then try to judo throw the other skater to win the match. The art is great and the writing is sharp, and if I have any complaint it's that there's not really a lot of tension in the story. It's just a feel-good tale of animal people doing this ridiculous sport and hooking up with each other.
