Every Elf in the North Pole
Liked Christmas a Lot
But Wily, in his Skull Castle,
He certainly did not

He never got presents
No piano lessons or egg beaters
He had no itchy sweaters
Or bobble heads of world leaders

You know the reason why
The cause is not well furled
He's always on the Naughty List
For trying to take over the World

So Wily had a thought
and it was a wicked plan
He'd build an Army of Robots
And replace that Jolly Toyman!

And a robot army he built!
But it wasn't enough!
So he also built a time machine
(He had the stuff)

And Wily got a bigger army!
From the Past, Future and Space!
Rangers with Power!
And Knights in Disgrace!

He marched on the North Pole
With Conquest in his eye!
"HAIL THE NEW SANTA!"
"WILY CLAUS IS NIGH!"

And so Santa hid, with fear
Deep under his bed
There were robots coming
And they wanted him dead

There was one chance left
Let's hope it's not crass
It's all in little metal hands;
IT'S TIME FOR MEGAMAS

Ahh, the mathematical center of November. Pumpkin has given way to Nog, Dracula is sleeping peacefully in his grave and the Hallmark Channel has officially replaced the remaining 15% of its programming lineup that isn't Christmas Movie related, and you know what that means...

That's right; it's Talking Times Favorite Holiday (next to needing to re-enter your TFA log-ins) MEGAMAS! The Most Secular Time of Year! The Festival of Fights! A time when all the rad, chili-loving members of our little forum come together and BLOW! ROBOTS! APART!

It's a holiday tradition I started when I was knee-high to a frog and have been keeping close to my heart ever since; and, once again YOU CAN HELP by saving Santa from his paralyzing ROBO-TERROR

The rules are so simple you may be following them already without realizing it!

1. Between November 15th and December 25th, we all come together and play as many Mega Man Games as possible
2. We keep track of every Robot Master (or their respective equivalent) we blow to bits and defeat as many as possible
3. If we can collectively bring down EIGHT HUNDRED Evil Robot Masters, Santa Clauses self confidence will be restored enough to make his big delivery, otherwise CHRISTMAS IS CANCELLED!

That seems straightforward enough, right? But nothing is ever straightforward where Dr. Wily is concerned, so here's some answers to questions that you have;

Q. What counts as a Mega Man game?
A. The dictionary defines a Mega Man game as "Any video game that looks like a Mega Man game, if you squint". Be that Mega Man itself, or Shovel Knight, or Krion Conquest, or whatever

Q. Is it ANY boss fight in a Mega Man game, or just the guys on the level select screen?
A. Listen to your heart; but generally speaking big tank bosses and Wily Machines and the like don't count. Just Robot Masters.

Q. What about rematches? You can't have a Mega Man game without boss rematches!
A. Unless the fight is markedly different in the rematch, just limit it to one per game. Dark Man and Doc Robot are kind of debatable and you'll have to consult with your doctor, priest and a local witch to determine how best to count those.

Q. How could you have been celebrating MEGAMAS since the early 1990s, if Mega Man himself wasn't built until the year 20XX?
A. Many of the traditions we associate with MEGAMAS were originally adopted from other cultures, and shouldn't be taken at literal face value. Except for the parts where Santa is menaced by Robots every year, that actually happens. It's why NATO monitors him every year.

Q. Does MEGAMAS just really translate to BIGMORE?
A. Technically, BIGMORE translates to MEGAMAS.

Q. My cousin said they celebrate ROCKMAS in Japan instead of MEGAMAS. Was I right to punch him in the mouth for telling lies?
A. You were in general, but he was telling the truth about this.

Q. My family doesn't believe in Mega Man, will I still get presents?
A. No

And I guess that's everything; so pour yourself up a big heaping bowl of Nog, jingle up your bells, and bring a Happy MEGAMAS to All, and to all AND EVERLASTING FIGHT!

Anyway. Guess I better flex my paws and get on Megamas. Time flies any more. Now which one...how about the one with an actual cat in it...let's go Tango!

A. You were in general, but he was telling the truth about this.
Fair enough, but follow-up question: Even though I clearly punched him in the mouth, my cousin is insisting I punched him in the nose. How would you recommend resolving this?

I'm excited for Megamas!! This year I'm thinking of checking out Panzer Paladin, Might No. 9, and prob some romhacks like usual.

Were there any Mega Man games that came out this year? I'm having a hard time thinking of any.

I believe the Mega Maniest new releases this year are Metal Unit and Moon Raider, though I think the latter may be more of a troid-em-up. It was hard to tell from the trailer, and the former may have more in common with the likes of Dead Cells

I believe it came out last year, but Mind Seize is also a Megatroidvania

THE COUNT HAS BEGUN!

Mans of Bomb, Guts, Cut, Elec, Ice, Fire and Mega have been tossed on the Yule Log Fire

Were at 7, nearly 1% of the way to our goal!

It might be time to replay Battle Network 3, anyway. Might as well do that now. And yes, they totally count, even if they are programs, not robots.

And Mega Man 2 is down, bringing the total to 15!

A drop in the bucket, but enough drops can fill an ocean!

While not official, there was at least one Mega Man fan-project to come out this year: Make A Good 48 Hour Mega Man Level (MaG48HMML).

You might remember the Make a Good Mega Man Level contests, a couple years back I submitted a stage to MaGMML2 and then MaGMML3 (where I even went as far as to create a new robot master). MaG48HMML (hereafter referred to as 48H) is neither of those contests, but ran roughly concurrently to MaGMML3, participants were given 48 hours to make a level based on a random enemy set. Also, no custom assets were allowed, besides music, so no new graphics besides what was in the MaGMML3 devkit, and certainly no new code or enemies, putting everyone on the same basic playing field compared to MaGMML3's anticipated code-a-palooza.

Of course, despite only having 48 hours to make a level for 48H, judging took quiiiiiite a bit longer than that (and we're also still waiting on MaGMML3) due to some delays with judging and also much of the devteam being shared with the SMBX contest Make A Good Level X 3 which was also in a kind of development hell, but after hunkering down and finishing MaGLX3 earlier this year they then went to work on 48H and released it a month and change ago.

So while this IS a contest game, thus the quality of levels, let's say, varies, it is still new Mega Man content you can sink your teeth into if you'd like. And many of the stages even have Robot Masters since the devkit had a modest selection available. My stage has Cut Man, underwater!

So just checking: How does Santa feel about someone wrecking the same Robot Masters in games with multiple playable characters? Like going through X4 with X and Zero, Shovel Knight with Shovel, Plague, Specter, and King, etc?

I played some Rockman X yesterday, mostly for the Penguigos and Horming Torpedos, but also for the faster dialogue. Eight bad robots disguised as animals wrecked, and I grabbed a Hadoken, too! Will I go on to clear the game? Not today, no!

The jump to the arm upgrade in Flame Mammoth's stage is pure garbo (as is its reprise in Wheel Gator).

I'd count those as separate playthroughs, so they each count

Anyhow, adding Mogris totals to my own fro having just beaten Mega Man 3, that puts us at 33!

I just count Doc Robot and Proto/Breakman once each

Had a failed run of One Step From Eden, which is basically Mega Man Battle Network, so I’m willing to add

Terra
Violette
Hazel

To the list; 37

A breezy jaunt through 4, the secret best mega man, and eight more masters scrapped.

What's Shenmue?
For Megaman '19, I played through the X series; for Megamas '20, I played through the X series again, but as Zero. So for Megamas '21, it only makes sense for me to play through the Zero and ZX series.

Last night I finished Zero 1. By my count that's eleven scrapped robot masters (the eight that show up in the boss rush + Aztec Falcon + Hanumachine + Copy X), bringing us to a grand total of 70.

Spent the morning going through that work of art, Megaman 5: Die Darkman! Die! That's 8 masters and 4 darkmen for the heap.

I wish to break my record from last year.

to that end, I start with this contribution:
Mega Man 1 (NES)
Mega Man 2 (NES)
Mega Man 3 (NES)
Mega Man 4 (NES)
Mega Man 5 (NES)
Mega Man 6 (NES)

Geez, Lyrai…

Okay so that’s 48 Robot Masters, plus Doc, Break and four iterations of Dark Man, that puts us at 54 more for a grand total of 136

And now I’ve finished with the Nintendo Entertainment System by finishing off Mega Man 6 and bringing our total to 156!

What's Shenmue?
Finished Zero 2! I see 11 "robot master-shaped" bots in here (seven Mutos Reploids + three Guardians + Elpizo). So that puts us at 167.

I gotta say, the boss names in this series are amazing. Hyleg Ourobockle. Kuwagust Anchus. Burble Hekelot. If there was ever a game that cried out for an announcer, it's this one.

How about the announcer from Street Fighter Alpha 3?

I got two masters into the most poisonous MM game, Mega Man 6, before I was too sick to continue.

When I felt better I went through MM11 on easy to pick up an additional eight. Dang I like 11 a lot. I'm thinking I'll run through on some higher difficulties now that I've tested the water.

177?
