Chrono Trigger is a JRPG game involving time travel as three friends initially try to make it back home, then on learning of an entity targeting the world itself, gather friends and allies to stop it. The game was known for it’s great Akira Toriyama designs, memorable characters and fun rollicking plot, which while still having big stakes, has a lighter touch compared to say, Final Fantasy VI, which Square put out about the same time. It’s a talking time favourite to be sure and it will be interesting to see how high it ranks on the JRPG list.

Crono is a young man who is best friends with an inventor named Lucca. One a day when Crono met a new friend, Marle, the three were caught in an accident with Lucca’s newest invention, a teleporter, which sent them through time. Eventually, in trying to get home, Crono and his friends would learn that in the far future the Earth would be destroyed by a powerful entity named Lavos. Soon, Crono must gather friends from the past and future in order to find a way to stop Lavos.


Though the game is an ensemble, Crono is essentially the classic silent protagonist of Chrono Trigger. He’s the entry point for the game and is the classic “basic swordsman” hero to take you through the wild worlds of the game. As a result, he is the least fleshed out playable because his job is mostly to allow you to project yourself onto the classic brave selfless hero character. Still, he’s got the classic Akira Toriyama spiky hair design that served him well in the 90s.

I think I might have cheated on one. On the Isla Fisher question, I googled Chris Hemsworth because I knew he was on an Australian soap and guessed it would be the same one. Turns out it was, but googling at all was probably not cool.

Ayla is a cavewoman from the year 65,000,000 BC. She is the chief of her clan of cave people and admires strength in all it’s forms. Her people are at war with the dinosaur people known as the Reptites. When time traveler Crono and his friends arrived in her time, the three teamed up to fight the Reptites and later joined in their quest to fight the entity known as Lavos, which threatens the world. Ayla is incredibly strong and durable and fights with her fists and feet. She also loves to drink and is also implied to be attracted to strength regardless of gender (both elements which is changed from the original translation to English)


Mechanically, Ayla brings the muscle to the party and makes quite the entrance in the game. A classic caveman-type (down to her dialogue), she’s the brute and mostly brings extra fun to the game. A lot of the characters get backstories with tragedies but she don’t got time for that. She’s got dinosaurs to beat up! She has an iconic look, including wild hair even for a Toriyama-designed character. The name is actually inspired by the character of the same name from the book series and movie Clan of the Cave Bear and visually takes inspiration from Taiwanese singer Ouyang Fei Fei.

Interestingly she was originally going to have flat hair until a producer insisted on something wilder and it really works in bringing the character together. She also uses the pronoun あたい which represents femininity and toughness but it’s an idea that really couldn’t translate easily in localization.

Princess Nadia was a princess living in Guardiana who was bored with her life in the castle. Sneaking out in a total Princess Jasmine move, she pretends to be a commoner and befriends the heroic Crono and inventor Lucca under the name Marle. She is accidentally sent back in time by Lucca’s invention, only to be mistaken for her ancestor, the queen. Crono and Lucca return to find her and when the three return, they find Crono framed for her kidnapping, despite character witnesses and Marle herself standing up for him, and the trio end up escaping and traveling in time again to discover the framing is part of a conspiracy that will end the world.


Marle initially plays the role of Princess to be saved in the game but soon becomes an invaluable part of the party. Yes, she is also the party healer, but she also uses strong water attacks with her magic and techs. Wielding a crossbow, she also has the strongest magic defense of all the characters (the trade-off being lowest HP).

Lucca Ashtear is a brilliant scientist who created a devise to make teleportation possible. However, due to the involvement of a magic pendant, the teleportation machine inadvertently created a time machine, sending Princess Nadia back in time. She and her friend Crono take jaunts through time to save her and end up discovering a monstrous threat to the world itself that she helps finds. She is also key in awakening party member Robo, a robot servant, and the two become fast friends.


Our last Chrono Trigger character. While most other characters use conventional weaponry, Lucca uses high tech gadgets to save the day. She’s also got a great character design and a quirky personality marked by her enthusiasm and curiosity for the strange events of the mission our heroes undertake. Some characters get bigger arcs than others but Lucca’s personal story is a bit more intimate, the opportunity to change her mother’s fate. It’s a very quick section of the game but it does leave an impact for the player. Regardless of the outcome, though, Lucca remains Lucca, a brilliant inventor and the teams most invaluable member due to her understanding of time travel within the game. Also, she made Robo happen.

I'm glad I got the Stardew Valley one! My spouse apparently hadn't used the sewing machine at all in the game despite playing it for 100+ hours and was baffled when I mentioned it.
 
I'm actually playing Stardew right now (one Red Cabbage left to finish the Center!), so while I didn't know a lot about crafting clothes, Omnigeode was a pretty big giveaway for me.
 
My partner got the Stardew one, also from the omnigeode.

This was just a really good set for me! Most of the automation questions are literally about my job, and a lot of the others randomly hit things I know about. The only category that was a complete wash was Isla Fisher.
 
Ha, yeah, I tried to use that as a point for it, but he kept insisting there must be another game that uses omnigeode since he was sure he'd have seen the cloth stuff after playing so much.

I invoked our golden trivia rule though: don't argue the answer based on how sure you are that it's right, argue it based on how mad you'll be if it turns out you were right and your answer was shot down. I made it clear I would be real pissed.
 
The other good rule that could fall under is "don't discard your first guess if you don't have a clearly better one".
