It turned out that a closed door just randomly opened one time despite having done nothing I could discern to influence it doing so

There aren't many doors to begin with that early on... was it the trick door that activates with the pressure plates on the floor? Those are about the only ones you're interacting with, starting out.

It was between me and the upgrade that lets you slide. I went into the room before and saw it was blocked off so left, then when I came back the door just opened. idk how I did it, but I can make progress now.
