Totally Legit Deltarune Spoilers

RT-55J

space hero for hire
(He/Him + RT/artee)
After a bajillion years, Deltarune Chapters 3, 4, and 5 have finally come out, and my boss has been kind enough to let me play them all on the clock at work.

Here are my favorite bits:
  • I liked the new troll species Toby introduced for the home dark world. It is kinda weird how they don't have arms most of the time, and some of their speech quirks are pretty weird.
  • The scene where Berdly eats some chicken nuggets got a good laugh out of all of my coworkers (and it was an excellent set-up for a later plot point!).
  • The main antagonist of Chapter 3 is a thinly veiled parody of Barney the Dinosaur.
  • The optional superboss for chapter 3 exudes more tumblr-sexyman energy than even Spamton. Brace yourselves for some incredible fanart.
  • Toriel is Gaster, which I guess explains why Sans has always been interested in her.
  • I just started chapter 4, but the decision to turn the game into a side-scrilling metroidvania that takes place in a pizza parlor is a bizarre decision, but I guess all true creative masterminds have to go full Italian-Mode at one point or another.
  • The meat factory level is the stuff of nightmares, let me tell you.
More updates as I make more progress.

Oh wow, I can't believe Jockington would betray our party like that!

This makes the snowgrave route seem tame!

I understand why Toby keeps adding more verses to Don’t Forget every chapter, but did we really need one about how Berdly likes watching reruns of Larry King in the background while he does WoW raids?

Don't get me wrong, I still like the character, but Toby's doing some really weird things with Berdly. Like, I’m not entirely surprised that he's both a gamer and a theology nerd, but I really think the pacing of this church-dark-world-chapter is being ruined by him randomly spouting unskippable 5-minute theological lore-dumps every screen transition. (Buddy, you don’t need to keep telling me who “the Angel” is supposed to be.)

Berdly trying to explain lesbians to the priest guy was pretty funny though.

If the game didn't want me to use Ralsei's new spell, they wouldn't have been so bold as to call it "Shitty Magic That Doesn't Work".

You may suddenly be seeing a lot of remixes of a song called “Black Knife” from chapter 3. Don’t worry about any major spoilers — it’s just the BGM for a cooking minigame you play in the dark.

Oh wow. The reveal that the in-game music has been diegetic the entire time, being played out of a bluetooth speaker that was surgically implanted in Kris’s larynx when they were young (and which they exercise no meaningful control over), really adds another interesting wrinkle to the whole metanarrative thing with the player’s SOUL. Really ballsy of Tobert to wait until Chapter 6 before dropping this bomb.

Okay, Chapter 5 finally came out -2 days ago, and I gotta say that while I do appreciate the swerve of making Asgore a huge weeb and theming his dark world around it, the segment where you learn he has a thing for feet and have to escape from the dark world manifestation of his collection of VHS tapes of anime foot smut made me feel a little bit uncomfortable.

Fantastic chapter otherwise. I never would have expected Catti to be an expert marksman and kill the roaring knight early like that, but it makes sense in retrospect.

Can't wait for chapters 6 and 7 to release next year.

I had heard the rumors that Dana Gould would be reprising his role as Gex in this game, but was surprised to learn that he was not relegated to a dark world role. Having him be the original founder of the pizza place and old buddies with Gerson led to some surprisingly poignant Gex scenes.

okay. The bit with Asgore's harem of bodypillows threatening to unionize against him was really well done. Good job on Noelle for helping them stand up for themselves.

Still haven't seen any flowers yet. Very weird.

I used to be a "Ralsei's just a boy" truther, but after all the, uh, floral imagery in the 4th musical number I think it's clear that he's one of the most clueless eggs of all time.
