Top 50 Rock Bands: We Will Rock You

After Ixo's post, i'm afraid Talking Time will want to redo the vote and call Can the #1 Rock Band. :)

(I've listened to a bit of The National since reading your opinions about it, and i'm enjoying it so far!)

If you haven't heard The National before you might know them from Game of Thrones, where they did "The Rains of Castamere" over the credits of The Red Wedding.

And which band is that?

Also, don't assume - I'm sure we could surprise you. Well, maybe not me but some other tyrant(s).

It's certainly possible that someone else also stumbled on them, you never know. I doubt we'll see them but I'll spoiler just in case.
The band I forgot to vote for is Seeed, a reggae/hip-hop/dancehall collective from Berlin. Not my usual genre but I got an album of theirs during a trip to Germany and their stuff is just a lot of fun, though I prefer the more up-beat tracks to the languorous ones that I think you probably need to be high to properly appreciate.

Also I'd forgotten "Turtles Have Short Legs" is a Can track, which makes the tenuous comparison even more apt.

What's Shenmue?
Huh, I'm a little surprised to see that only one other person voted for Can; since krautrock is prog-adjacent— and I know TT loves its prog— I thought there would be a few fans here. I was hoping for a Mooney vs Suzuki debate!

Anyway, I love Can! I don't think I have too much to say that I didn't already, but I'll add that if anyone is intrigued and looking to check out their music, the album of the song that Nich posted, Ege Bamyasi, is a great place to start. It's got Can's trademark sound, but in a more compact form— 3-5 minute songs (and a couple longer ones) instead of sprawling epics.

I guess, personal story and all of that, i used to introduce Can to random people at campus housing in college (with Mother Sky or Halleluhwah). The reception was almost always great - i guess the band is entrancing.
Hahaha, that's great. I wouldn't think that "Halleluhwah" would work well as an introduction, but it is an infectious song.

Oh, Damo, definitely Damo. Love the presence/charisma of Suzuki. To give an example, i love his dreamy vocals in Bring Me Coffe or Tea!

Don't take the lack of a request for a writeup as a sign that your faves didn't make it. I mostly only asked for them when it came to bands I didn't think I could do justice to myself.

Oh no it's not that. It's the rather deep cuts I'm seeing the rankings. My music-fu is weak.

I'm guessing we'll see a *lot* more well-known bands in the top half of the list. The ones right now are squeaking in with only two mentions.

If you didn't see it, Nich explained in another thread that he got unexpectedly slammed by work this month, which is why we're starting up the 32/64-bit games list soon alongside this one. Life happens! I'm sure Nich will be back to this whenever he can be.

Nich can take all the time he needs. Before the list, he was actively working hard to make it a list that would come out timely, asking me for some advice and ideas. But things happen in life and I think he handled it in a sensible way, letting Issun's list of through and reserving the right to complete it at the pace and at the time he wants to.

I understand if you feel a little bummed. You worked hard on your list and you want to see the results. And when it happens, it will be great. I look forward to it. But I don't think we should trying to be pressuring anyone to finish if they've made it clear that the new lists can happen and this will happen when it happens.

I heard about the work thing, but I was beginning to be concerned he fell off a cliff or something.

Having done these lists twice, I can absolutely understand real life getting in the way of list progress. And I can say for myself that I felt so guilty to not be posting regularly, or needing to announce a break to get some rest. The expectation is real and it's stressful, even if the readers say that it's okay to have that hiatus.

As participants in a list, the best advice I can give is patience. Please know that the list organizer is already feeling like they're not fulfilling what they set out to do whenever a delay happens, and don't pressure them into rushing back in or add to the anxiety already raging within.

I fully support Nich in taking however long it takes for him to come back to this, and only when he is ready to commit. And if he needs another break, he can take it. This is for fun. Don't make it work.

Thanks for the update all, I also didn't see the other post, so glad to have it in here now and know what's going on and that Nich is okay.

It's a damn shame that [band that I voted for] didn't release their new album a couple of months ago, because they would have been much farther up my list.
