So the "Maiden demo" that's up right now is basically a tech demo with no action gameplay? Is that right?

Whose problem with 3 is it wasn't faithful enough? It was arguably too faithful to a game that's just less good than 2.

Some people were very upset about two things, from what I saw: 1) no decision points (fight the monster, run into the station, etc) and 2) the clock tower section was cut. Neither of these upset me, because I don't much care for the original Nemesis, but some fans had gripes.

I’m sure they’ll be a boring lab for the last third.

RE 5 is chronologically the last game in the series I’ve played, and that one seemed to tie everything up in a nice, molten package. What is the series even about now?

RE7 was so far removed from the original continuity, I assumed it was a soft reboot, but some easter egg-ish stuff in the game indicates that, yeah, this is the same continuity as the other *checks notes* 8 mainline entries (love that RE8 is actually RE10, but we had to go with a 0 and a "Code: Veronica" that was very clearly always meant to be part of the main continuity). Then one of the producers or someone just out and confirmed it in an interview or something. But at this point, you really don't need to know what happened in RE0-6, though I guess 8 might rest a little harder on the LORE since Chris appears to factor in quite a bit more heavily.

As someone who only previously experienced RE3 through the light gun games, no Gravedigger was pretty disappointing to me (I was equally peeved when RE2R turned the alligator boss into a glorified cutscene)

As a lifelong arachnophobe, I'm continually frustrated that those old terrors have functionally disappeared from the series in its modern state--particularly adaptations of the material where they previously lurked.

Just beat Resident Evil Revelations. Never finished it before, 9 years on and off. Pathetic.

Anyway I liked it overall. The final boss is a pain in the arse. The ending is so stupid that it's wonderful. Good game. Will never play again.

I put that one down because the "scan every room for ammo, etc" mechanic put me off so much that I just never finished it.

I got Revelations 2 in a Humble Bundle last year and have been meaning to finally check that one out, since it is, by all accounts, a vast improvement on the first.

I know it's not Resi but it's Resi-adjacent: I've been playing Alone in the Dark '92 and I am surprised how much I'm enjoying it. It's clunky and ugly and frustrating but there's a core of good game design that shines through. It probably also helps that I'm using a walkthrough but yeah, having fun with it. There's something about the sheer stupidity of throwing a statue you found at the possessed knight being the only way to take it out that tickles the ol' nostalgia bone.

I'm not enjoying Resi 3 Remake any more, sadly, for mostly the same reason I didn't enjoy Resi 2 Remake. The inconsistency. If I shoot a zombie in the leg it really ought to fall over. That only seems fair and logical to me. Two bullets at the most. But no, not here. Same deal with headshots, it's totally random. I don't care if that's what the original is like, this is a high fidelity, extremely realistic-looking game, and the disconnect is insurmountable. I know it's been designed this way intentionally, the randomness, but I'm not a fan of it.

Anyway, it's... fine. I guess. But it's also dumb as hell.

Today is the 25th anniversary of the original RE's release in Japan. (It's next week for the US.) If you had asked me at the time, I would not have predicted it to become Capcom's first or second most-bankable franchise (though I did absolutely love it).

I would like to state, for the record, that that is decidedly NOT what the originals are like.

This True Director's Cut ROMhack that just dropped looks like it might be the optimal way to play original RE now?

Thanks for the heads up! I literally started playing the Director's Cut on my hacked PS Classic last night. The original Director's Cut, not the Dual Shock version with its... interesting soundtrack. It's nice to see a single, cohesive "best" version. It seems like they are going to update the patch with random things cut from earlier betas too?

I remember being so disappointed when I picked up the Director's Cut back in 1997, only to realize that it still had the same censorship as the original release. The Arranged mode is a fun remix at least. Random headshots with a handgun! New camera angles! Zombie Forrest! The RE2 demo was genuinely great, albeit a little confusing to someone who had been following RE2 (aka RE 1.5) religiously. Where's Elza? Who is Claire!?

I was such a junkie for the game that while I was a bit bummed out that the cutscenes didn't seem to be actually uncensored, the arrange mode was enough for me to do <3 hour clears with Chris and Jill for that infinite launcher action.

There's a thing happening next week with a new trailer and "other surprises." Also, the RE:Verse beta is apparently open now.

So played PS4 village demo...

It's good but...
I like the ornate decorative nature of the villages buildings. Reminds me of stuff in Midsommar... Murels, inscriptions and filigree.

You also just sorta walk around a lot and explore. You seem to get a lot more chances for ammo than 7, but not as much combat than you might expect (so far)

The werewolves suck though. Like... Just very much not interesting or scary. There is an effective scripted scene where a dude turns and slaughters a room, but running into wolves in town is like, eh. There is a cool effect where they are in the tall grass like velociraptors or alien covenant white aliens.

Still stoked for game, but a bit not sure what it is? I'm buying in series x, but glad I got to try this demo ahead of time!

I'm getting the feeling like Capcom wants to market RE8 to hell and back no matter how much pre-release fatigue it induces.

So much better than "three types of mold blobs," though.

I'd disagree fully. If you find the end of Silence of the Lambs where Clarice sees the corpse in the basement tub before total darkness to be frightening... Mold is cool. Thematic too, I'd say. Werewolves. I really couldn't give a shit. Entirety of game may change mind.... But here is wolf guy in broad daylight. Not particularly dangerous or intimidating. Buh

I'm not sure "I like the Silence of the Lambs" translates to "spending 8 hours fighting the same two monsters is fun" for me personally. The wolf guy and vampire ladies at least mean there's a chance that every single enemy that isn't a boss could be different things. I love RE7, but the absolute weakest aspect to me was the repetitive enemies. Mold blob! Mold blob with big claws! Fast mold blob that runs on all fours!

MOLD! BLOODY MOLD! WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT THE BLOODY MOLD BUT THERE'S THE BLOODY MOLD WINKING ME IN THE FACE. I WANT TO CHOP IT OFF AND CUT IT UP AND MADE SOME GUACA-MOLD-E!!

Yes, that's right. It's an Austin Powers in Goldmember reference. In 2021.
