"Wonder Boy - Asha in Monster World is being developed by STUDIOARTDINK alongside ININ Games, with members of the original Wonder Boy creative team at the helm. That includes series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa (who has returned to lead and direct this new game), original composer Shinichi Sakamoto (who will be producing the game’s sounds, this time around), character designer Maki Ōzora, and creative manager Takanori Kurihara."

Well all right. I think I liked Monster Boy and Cursed Kingdom more than most and would like to see a sequel to that someday but I'll take a proper follow up.

What's Shenmue?
Cool! I just played MW4 for the first time last year, so this is really timely for me. Looking forward to the full reveal.

Apparently "Wonder Girl" is a trademark of or is copyrighted by DC according to Teg so my first choice of subtitle ("Wonder Girl 2") wasn't possible, but maybe "Girl of Wonder II" would be suitable so we could call it

Wonder Boy VII: Monster World VI: Girl of Wonder II: Asha in Monster World

Did not expect this to happen.

I’m assuming it’s a sequel to MW4, and not a confusingly worded remake.

I didn't think Monster World IV was all that and a bag a' patater chips (as you Americans are so wont to say), but I think I'll revisit it and see how wrong I am.

Artdink? Have they done metroidvania/platformers in the past? When I think Artdink I usually think experimental sim stuff like Tail of the Sun.

Putting side-by-side comparisons to the original in the trailer isn't doing this any favors.

I guess this is one of those remakes made for people who break out in hives when they see sprite art. Good for them, I guess.

I won't lie, my enthusiasm kind of... plummeted.

But the original still exists. And also the entire Shantae series exists so... okay

Yeah, that trailer looks rough. I hope they can polish up the visuals a bit in the next few months, as the gameplay didn't look like a downgrade. Odd that this one has many Westone peeps on it and yet comes off as the one most shaky.

Individual assets look fine, I like Asha's less super deformed look (not as a replacement of the original, but on its own I like it). My bigger issue with the art are things like that centipede boss' colors clashing with the stain glass in the back and getting lost. Also the fact that the introductory trailer seems to have lots of frame rate dips.

I don't know, I've never finished the original and since I own it both on 360 and the Genesis Mini, I can't really justify a reason to get this one.

I'm going to reserve judgment until we see the final product and to see if there's any substantial changes to make this worth diving into

I've seen worse 3D conversions of 2D classics but I've also seen better. The animation could use some work.

I just can't figure why the original staff reunited after all this time for...this.

I was asking on Twitter if there were any 3D remakes of 2D games that were genuinely superior to the originals. Someone (I forgot who, sorry, they're probably a TTer though) said Mega Man Powered Up which I agreed with at the time but thinking about it I'd still rather play the NES game.

Anyway, I'm trying not to be dismissive and shitty all the time (just 80% of the time, really), but I can't fathom the thought process behind this one. Nobody who likes Monster World wants it in this form. It's not even like it's hard to play the original Monster World IV anymore.
