The Wario Land Appreciation Society

I feel like I came off too harsh on WL3, which I think is a very impressive game despite the faults I noted...

I haven't listened to the episode yet (and haven't got very far in Shake It so am excluding it), but my ranking would be 3 > 1 > 2 > VB > 4, with the caveat that I think every one of these games are excellent and do not in any way dislike 4. I have come to like it a lot!

They did it unofficially?
Fans have released an emulator for 3DS that runs at fullspeed (apparently, my hacked 3DS is a 2DS XL so can't do 3D, so I haven't tried it, plus I have a Virtual Boy with flashcart anyway) called Red Viper.

Shake It! is probably my least favorite, but still good, and I love the art style. I don't know what order I'd put the series in, but I was thoroughly impressed when I finally played through WL3. I also love the VB entry.

Coincidentally, look what came today (and they were two separate eBay sales, so getting it all on the same day was not what I expected)!

I owned this game before, but sold it off in my big collection sell off in 2018. Only bought this one because I got a good deal ($50 on the cartridge, which is slightly under what it usually sells for, and only $35 for the box and manual, presumably because the manual has a tear? I dunno, but $85 is WAY less than what a CIB copy of this game goes for).

So now, to show how big a dumb fan I am of this series, I got 'em all:

They're in protective plastic sleeves, hence the big glare in the photo. But yeah, safe to say, I really love these games, and this is the first time I've ever owned them all complete in box. Underpaid for most of them, Wario Land II was pretty much market value, but I pieced them all together from various sales to get everything CIB (because I've been buying CIB Gameboy/GBC/GBA stuff of late like a total idiot. I've attempted to justify it to myself by telling myself these CIB games are my reward for losing 40 pounds - which I have, and am trying to lose a few more, but that is not originally why I tried to lose weight lmao).

In any case, I'll be beating all these games soon. Having just beat 4 and having had a pretty good time, I'm always up for a replay of 3, and I've been slowly pecking away at 100%ing Wario Land II again and having a good time. I replaced the battery in Virtual Boy Wario Land today (my first, and probably only, Virtual Boy battery replacement) and have done so already for all the other carts, so they'll keep their saves for quite a while.

I don't need the black and white version of Wario Land II, right? ...Please tell me I don't. I've never played that version, either... Shit. And no, I won't be buying Wario Land: Shake It, because I will not be collecting disc based games anymore, another rule I've put on myself besides "only buy games you intend to play."

It's a testament to just how damn good the series is that you were all quite harsh on 3, though I can totally see where you're coming from. I don't even disagree with what you said, it's just that I wasn't as bothered as much as the three of you were. It's my favorite game in the series, and I really did feel like Wario taking damage again in 4 was a step back (although it was the timer in every dang stage that initially repelled me from 4, though I've gotten over that). I love the intricate level design of 3, and how every level is it's own, nearly entire level long puzzle. The boss fight against the stupid soccer rabbit is basically the only part of the game I dislike, and it's mainly because the friggin turtle goalie cheats lol.

I think your criticisms of 3 were valid, and your praise for 4 a bit too effusive, and yet I'm not even mad because all these games kick ass. Except Master of Disguise, yeah, but that doesn't count imo lol

Every time I remember that Wario has actual health in Wario Land 4, I am a bit disappointed. It feels like such an integral part to his character, not being able to die that way.

I should still try 4 again. Maybe it will click this time.

I was always surprised about people liking 3 less than the others. I played it before 2, and loved everything about it. Specifically the slight metroid elements, of getting more capable with some treasures, and having these big levels with four different routes, effectively.

I guess I should replay that, too. Haven't done so in ages.

I've come to really appreciate Wario Land 4, but it's always struck me as odd that some random enemy with a sharp bit can damage and potentially kill Wario, but he can also be lit on fire, burned to a crisp, and reborn phoenix-like infinitely without losing health or dying. It's good that I know which enemies are safe to get hit by since I played II and 3 beforehand, I imagine it'd be very strange for someone who played 4 first.

I do think 4 is a good, even great game, though. It did finally click with me this time around. I basically just ignored the timer as best I could, and that pretty much worked out every time. I didn't come very close to running out of time, and I was able to find all the CDs, too, to 100% the game, only having to replay a few levels overall. It's solid.

I also appreciate Stu pointing out on that podcast that they changed not only the countdown timer in Hard mode in Wario Land 4, but where locations of the items you need to find are. It will likely actually be hard to beat! I hit 0 in the countdown in the first level in the Emerald Passage, only to see that you don't instantly die, it just starts siphoning coins/points from you. Weird!

Oh wow, a complete copy of VB Wario. Excellent score!
It's in better shape than the first copy I owned years ago, too, especially after I ironed the box lol. The one I had before was much flimsier with more tears in it.

I've never actually thought to iron out some of my boxes. 😅 Of course, most of the ones in less than ideal shape are in a closet back at my childhood home, anyway.

It works incredibly well for bends. Just be sure to have a tshirt or something in between your iron and the box, and don't iron the box directly on a surface that would damage the box or something (I did a little bit of damage to my THPS2 GBA box because I just put a tshirt over it while it sat on the counter, and part of the counter pattern got onto the back of the box. Luckily its just THPS2 GBA, which is worth like $10, and it doesn't even look that bad). This is the video I saw that turned me onto the idea:

Gonna keep that in mind - I definitely have a few boxes that are a bit bent in spots. And more that have lots of rips and torn spots. Probably not worth a lot in the condition they're in, but I mean, the cardboard just gets rarer and rarer, so just having anything of the boxes is probably better than nothing.

Rips and torn spots don't get too much better with ironing, but bends come out pretty good. I got a good deal on Fire Emblem GBA CIB and ironed the bent up box to near perfection, was pretty happy with that since that game is expensive.

*looks up CIB value*
*spits out drink*

That's one I was able to buy back in the day. I can't imagine trying to shell out for a CIB copy now. Oy vey.

Yeah. I paid far, far less than the going price for it, thankfully. GBA stuff has gone up big since 2020.

Noice. I've got a surprising number of boxed GBA games because I raided a lot of Circuit City's stock back in the day. Pretty sure that's where I got my copies of Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and Drill Dozer.

Drill Dozer may be the most surprising case - look up how much that goes for these days. That game was in bargain bins for like fifteen years! That and Boktai. Absolutely wild.

Boktai is insane. There is one for 12 bucks, and one for 300. What? Why?

I'm kinda disgusted by these stupid retro prices. Seems a bit disgusting, how greedy people are with this stuff. Might be unrealistically idealistic, but I feel like collecting old video games should be open for everyone, not just people with too much money.

I know, there were always these weirdly expensive games like Suikoden 2. But these were the exception, not the rule, right?

I'm assuming the $12 one was mispriced and relisted, or sold because that's very cheap even for a Japanese copy, and I don't see it on eBay currently. And if it has the solar sensor, it's not bootlegged - if if doesn't, you probably could sell a fake version for $12 lol

And regarding collecting, it varies from system to system. Outside the really rare or really desired stuff, things like Genesis prices have appeared to come down, and afaik no one wants Xbox stuff, so all those consoles are super cheap to collect for if you're into that sort of thing. Meanwhile, Nintendo first party stuff goes up and up, while non-rare 3rd party prices have come down a decent amount for like, NES. SNES is slowly coming down in price, but Gameboy, GBA, and Gamecube are at peak highs right now.

It's sort of kinda always been this way... Atari stuff used to be very expensive, now most of it is largely worthless. Some of this stuff may come down in price soon, hopefully. At least in the meantime emulation has been pretty impressive for decades, so we can at least still play this stuff.

The article is still there. From GB, 12.41 € + shipping. Here.
Which seems, when actually looking at it like just the box. And a "tablet"? Whatever that is. I guess it would be my fault for not looking carefully, but seems really shitty.

Fair enough, if that's just my lacking knowledge about retro games. I just remember reading on TT how prices exploded, after covid.

Geez, that is nuts. My cousin gave me Boktai years ago, I knew it was pretty pricey now but didn't know it had climbed that high. Wild! (And holy cow, Boktai 2 is even more expensive!)

I'm hoping that prices come down eventually. I think you may see it with the more common games, but the big hitters are likely always going to be big hitters. Let's just say I have no hopes of getting Little Samson for, say, $50.

Probably a good deal of the market is driven by what people that are just getting lots of disposable income are nostalgic for. Probably why GB/A/GC are up right now.

I do not understand how anyone could dislike Wario Land 3. I mean, I get the bosses can be frustrating, sure - getting hit once and having to redo not only the boss but getting back to them is super annoying. But man... It just plays so well, and is so much fun to explore. It is difficult for me to not just think "one more treasure" every time I go to shut the game off. I'm tempted to be a total weirdo and not only 100% the game, but get all the coins hidden in each level, too, which I've never done before...

The thing that bothers me about Wario Land 3 is that there should be some way to indicate which levels have previously had a flash indicating something became accessible, without having to take notes. Note-taking does not belong on Game Boy games.

There is! Press select while on the map and one of the options will replay the last animation that showed you what levels changed.

The most recent one, sure, but what about the ones from the completions before that? Keeping track of it all quickly gets out of hand.
