It says they’re closer to the original releases. I hope they didn’t roll back the changes to the first three games, these versions are definitely the ones I plan to go back to for those specific games.

did i do all of that?

That font is better, but still crap. And yet... I might buy these again, if these changes aren't brought to the PC releases in an update or something.

I don’t think I’m going to double dip. A nice limited edition might have pulled me in but the one they’re selling is $260 for vinyl and an art book, and lololol

These versions were nice as a change of pace and a novelty for the aesthetic and mechanical changes they brought, but I don't think they're going to track as definitive or something to revisit regularly for me. They're in an awkward spot of pushing back too little as a baseline, but also possessing momentary balance adjustments that are singularly overdone compared to the source material. I do recommend playing all of them the once, at least.

The new font looks fine to me. It’s a big improvement over the old one, since it doesn’t clash with the pixel graphics.

I’ve been playing the 3DS version of FF1 with the Pixel Remaster soundtrack edited in. The 3D is pretty good in most places, but it’s fantastic in the battle screen. It’s too bad the other games didn’t get the same treatment.

Oh heck, encounter/XP/etc tweaks are really gonna push me over the line into needing these (I don’t have the earlier versions). But I’m still knee-deep in Theatrhythm! Not to mention emergency-finishing BotW. Well,I guess there’s no rush if I’m not chasing premium editions.

I never got the PC/Mobile versions of the PRs, so I might finally get these.

Has there been any sign of Square putting more physical editions out for purchase or has that ship likely sailed?

I have not heard anything; it seems this one really might be a limited release (which is super annoying; I would have missed out if I hadn't been up late that night)

I pre-loaded all six Pixel Remasters on Switch, and the home screen icons are fukken siqqq. Nice juicy closeups of the Amano logo art for each.

I'm really excited to dig into these! I've played the pants off of FF4 and 6 over the years but it's been a minute; FF1 and 2 I last played on GBA, I've only played all the way through FF5 once (also on GBA) and I'm an FF3 virgin. Can't wait to select Fight off of a menu.

Slightly off topic, but I just saw people getting upset elsewhere over Matsuno confirming Vaan was always intended to be the POV character in FF12, and the whole "Basch was originally the main character" rumor was just that and nothing more.

Word is that the games have the option to reduce exp gains by half. Surprised they included a hard mode but eternally grateful. Honestly never thought I'd see it.

If anything Ashe is the main character, and Vaan is our entry into her story.

I quite like it when the protagonist isn’t the most important person in the world.

Whoa, wow. That's pretty cool! Any word on whether these changes would be put into the PC versions? I might double dip if not... (though having played through all six on PC I can wait a while)

One interesting console Pixel Remaster thing I noticed: I was playing FF1 with original music and the bridge building scene you get after rescuing Sarah seems to have an 8-bit version of that jaunty tune that accompanies that scene, which is a really neat touch since otherwise there are no original tracks that can coincide with it.

Shame they didn't go all out and do 8-bit versions of all the additional battle music too, Garland's 8-bit battle theme was just the usual Battle BGM instead of a new version of Miniboss. I guess it's like DuckTales Remastered rules, where The Money Bin and Mt. Vesuvius got 8-bit versions of their stage themes since there was no equivalent, but the final battle still used the boss music.

Now I'm thinking, are there any other sequences in the games that were not in the originals that also had new music made for them? I think once you get beyond FF3 it'll be pretty unchanged so probably just in those three games.

I’ve been playing VI at half exp and half gp. It hasn’t so much added crunch as turned the game deadly. Party wiped a few times. Y-Burns on Lethe are a game over if they decide to cast fireball. And you have to anticipate Ultros’ tentacle hit across the team. If Banon isn’t defending it’s GG. Pretty fun stuff! (But harrowing.)

Repulsed the invasion of Narshe and Terra's soared off to Zozo. I was worried Kefka was going to be a brick wall as Tunnel Armor and Phantom Train were both challenges.

Any spell Tunnel Armor lobed was a guaranteed KO so Celes was on permanent runic duty, but without the Hermes Sandals she couldn't keep pace. That meant Locke was stuck both attacking and healing and doing so at a snail's pace. Stealing the Air Knife then equipping it from the item command sped things up slightly, though I'm not sure it made up for losing the Main Gauche's extra dodge. It was a long battle and a big hit could put someone on the floor. From there the Armor only had to pull out a spell to end the fight, which happened a couple of times.

The Phantom Train was an even bigger jerk. The first few attempts all started the same way. It would immediately toot its Diabolic Whistle and the party would be imped, confused, berserked, and poisoned. Desperate attempts were made to claw back to fighting form but at any time the Train could toot the team right back into the toilet. I thought I was going to have to use the Phoenix Down of shame, but then one attempt it chose to only attack with its Wheel and Acid Rain moves and the party made quick work of the bucket of bolts. They only needed a chance to unleash, but friends let me tell you it was tootin'.

So it was with trepidation I went into that Kefka fight. On average characters were at level 11 and no one had learned anything past their first tier of abilities. I needn't have worried though. All of his nasty attacks are nullified by runic and two characters supporting Celes prevent the encounter from turning into a Tunnel Armor situation. A lengthy fight, but not a threatening one and chapter 2 comes to an end.

So far half experience and gold has been fun but I wonder how long it will be sustainable. I'm haunted by visions of Ultima Weapon. Still, VI is one of the easier Fs. This tweaking might be what was needed for a sublime experience. It'll be interesting to see how things go once Espers enter the mix.
