If there's one thing that modern Final Fantasy hates, it's how humble the series roots as someone's mostly generic Dungeons & Dragons campaign given digital life were. 'Tis why the Dissidias threw in all of this origin nonsense for the Amano boxart guy.

I had much the same initial reaction to Stranger of Paradise, but I came around on actually liking it to the point that it is easily one of my favorite games from this year (was it released this year? I played it this year). Long story short (and the spoiler-ridden story is available right here), I found that having a protagonist that is a single-minded idiot is ideal for your typical videogame "mystery box" plot, and the attention given to the areas you explore in Stranger of Paradise portrays/betrays a love for the franchise. Like, it is the complete opposite end of the spectrum, but I felt Stranger of Paradise was more honest about its fanservice than World of Final Fantasy. It is 100% ymmv, but I felt like Stranger of Paradise at least justified its existence by the finale.

I can buy the fanservice, and I'm sure it'll be off the scale - I mean, the tutorial battle is against Tiamat in the Flying Fortress. That's really cool! And then you fight goblins that throw rocks at you, which is extra-cool. However those scenes are preceeded by a lovingly rendered explicit cutscene of Garland literally massacring the guards at Corneria and making them explode in blood.

Final Fantasy had a convoluted time loop as its primary villain's ultimate scheme and utilized sci-fi garnish like mechs and orbital space stations next to the dwarves and elves; there was always an aspiration and intent to draw on multiple kinds of genre sources to make up what the series would become. Dissidia was nothing but observant and faithful to the series's narrative origins in emphasizing those facets for its storytelling around the characters that originated from that formative material, and ties it up with gleeful panache whilst operating under a premise that's at its heart an unabased fan service romp. As far as self-tributes go, it's at the top of heap in concept and execution.

To be fair, there has never existed D&D, or anything strongly primarily influenced by D&D, without at least a couple spaceships quietly hanging out in the background.

Right. I think "humble" is just a particular description I wouldn't apply to a series whose main shared characteristic from the beginning through all its permutations almost beyond anything else has been ambition--to be brash and be noticed while doing it.

While we're taking about killing Chaos, a reminder that The Top 50 Pokemon is in #4, so that means these are the last days of voting for the Top 21 Numbered Final Fantasies!

Turns out this was recorded for a new entry in Square-Enix's series of shockingly good acoustic arrangement albums with shockingly bad album covers: Final Fantasy Series Acoustic Arrangements, coming in February 2023. Tracklist looks pretty solid! Battle to the Death is kind of a weird pick for FF6 but that's because they already did The Decisive Battle on a previous album. I'll probably get this.

I finished FF6 Pixel Remaster. One thing I'm enjoying more and more about these remasters is the combination of quality of life improvements and tougher enemies makes the games feel consistently difficult but never frustrating. Every dungeon feels enjoyably dangerous, which keeps me on my toes in a way the originals always meant to but often didn't. It makes 6 into such a different experience I wonder a little if the reason people focused so much on its story and music back in the day is that its easy difficulty made its gameplay too easy to overlook. I'll probably play 3 next.

I...

....kinda want to get that big-ass collector set. I pretty much swore off collector editions of games, but this one though? Aw geez.

If it helps your decision making process, it appears to be exclusively available through the Square Enix store. The SE Store has burned me on two separate limited edition orders, so I actively go out of my way to dissuade people from buying stuff from their site. I'm bitter! And it aids my wallet!

Yeah, now that I finally take a closer look at the pixel 'figures' they're kinda... not super great? Maybe if additional pics featuring different angles were present to better show off how they look it might help, but if they're not worth the extra price and if I could live without the Pixel Remaster FF Dot book (and I don't really do vinyl) then I think I'll pass in the end.

I just want a physical edition of this, but they dropped the news while I was asleep and they list it now as a waiting list. Did they say if other storefronts will get the standard edition? Or will that be SE's store exclusive too?

This is, indeed, a wonderful announcement on this, the day of our Final Fantasy's birth. I've been wanting these on Switch for a good long time now.

I hear tell they took down the screenshots that have text with the bad font in it. The significance of this decision is unknown, but hope springs eternal.

Welp, I didn't see this news for two days, and all four permutations of the physical edition are already completely sold out, thus saving me from questionable decisions. Thanks I guess, Squex.

Nothing in the Collector's Edition tempts me, but I would like to have a physical copy of this. Hopefully they do another wave of preorders.

did i do all of that?

Anyone else playing the Crisis Core remake? I forgot how fun and addicting it was. The new voice acting is bad, though not a dealbreaker, but it's very strange that Zack's voice actor sometimes sounds like John Mulaney to me (?!), though my wife doesn't think so.

I preordered the game, but between being sick for the last week+, and wanting to “quickly” bang out Front Mission 1st beforehand, I haven’t booted it up until this very moment.

If the new voice acting is bad, then the game is in good company/a faithful remaster because the original PSP game also had bad acting. I’ll probably play this thru in Japanese. It’s nice to have continuity for all the voices of these characters through the last 17 years.
