Hey Felix - which version of FFT are you playing? I don't think it changes things too much but I'm not familiar with the PSP version so I can't say for sure. Also, have you ever finished either version of the game?

Nope, I just started four times. Always made it past Dorter, but never farther than the mission in the desert, where you have a guest with very suicidal tendencies. But I mostly fizzle out because SRPGs tend to stress me out. I still want to beat this game at one point, because it does seem interesting. Still, I come back to it again and again, and it's not like I dislike it. I hope to make it through, this time.

I'm playing the PSP remake, WotL. But I assume it won't change enough to make any hints from you guys invalid.

For the record, it's pure coincidence that I play it now. It has nothing to do with my project of playing through all the regular FFs.

I agree with what everyone else has said about party builds and grinding. I have done complete playthroughs with no / minimal grinding.

That's the main thing that I needed to know, because the game has so many systems and things to look at, it seems REALLY overwhelming to me. That it seems to be hard to mess up sounds good.

But the other hints you guys mentioned are noted as well, thanks for them.

the best way to play final fantasy tactics is to grab a game boy advance

I did play through the two FFTA games, and did like them a lot. One thing that stands for them is how much more newbie friendly they are. I also like the story of FFTA and some of the side stories of FFTA 2. I know, splitting jobs between races is something people don't like, but it helped in making decisions about who gets which job way easier. Just one of every race, try the jobs out, done. Also, I never had a problem with learning stuff through equipment. *shrug* I certainly enjoyed these two games, and I will probably replay them at some point.

A lot of classes have movement/jumping boosting skills and most of them are wastes of points; except for the ones which give HUGE boosts; Dragoons have an ability that lets you ignore terrain height all together and... I think Time Mages can teleport around the map. It's usually not worth getting every single tier of magic on the Mage Classes; the high level stuff doesn't have enough of a damage boost to justify the grind or cost.

To elaborate on this, literally every Move+X skill is good -- even Move+1 gives the 3 Move classes enough movement to walk around an enemy facing them and hit them in the back where their evade is lower, for example. With the Jump skills, the aforementioned Dragoon ability lets them leap tall buildings in a single bound (this is very fun to do). This sounds like it would invalidate Jump +X, but it's worth nothing that it only affects vertical jump height; characters with Jump +3 can leap across some pretty crazy gaps. There are also like half a dozen water-based movement abilities that work in slightly different ways, but they're all only situationally useful to the point that you're probably better off just using a Move+X skill most of the time. And then there's stuff like Move on Lava, which... well, there's only one map with lava in it.

Thanks, that's already a lot of useful information. I think I have some kind of idea now how to proceed. I am surprised that the movement skills are bad, but I guess it isn't particularly sensible to have one single unit move around on its own. But elsewise, I'll just try different jobs out, and grind, if necessary.

Thanks for the info.
Movement Skills aren't bad, but Teleport is so absurdly brokenly good they're kinda illrelevant long term. Ignore Height is absolute garbage, though (because Teleport does everything it does and so much more and it's very expensive).

For a good time put Boots and Move + 3 on a Ninja on a Chocobo and pitch a Chaos Blade across the entire fucking map.

I don't think a Ninja would help with that particular fight; not as much as using the SPeed Up skill is (I think it's a Ramza-exclusive Squire ability
Yup. Squire is Ramza’s best job - surviving that battle involves only equipping Yell ( and having enough HP and armor to survive the first turn, I think). Then you just keep running away and yelling until you have so much speed you’re getting two turns per the boss’ one.

The thought of just running away from a stronger opponent, while screaming yourself into a rage in wild panic, sound absolutely hilarious to me. :D

I played a bit more, and the spritework is amazing. There are so many custom poses, for (I assume) single moments in this game, it's incredible.

Yeah that’s really an aspect that the clones and sequels never were able to truly replicate. I wonder if Project Triangle will take a shot.

I played a bit more and died in the mission, where you fight against the female knight, who is accompanied by two white mages and some thieves. I don't want to kill her, she seems nice.

Also, is Argath an elitist snob? I have a hard time keeping all the characters straight, but there is this scene (I think after Dorter, when you capture the enemy knight) where it seems like he doesn't care at all for the problems of the people of the Corpse Brigade, or regular people in general. I don't think I like him.

God, I died one more time before finally beating that mission. I didn't expect this being so hard. Steal heart was really annoying, and through them being able to use potions too made everyone so sturdy. Black magic seems really strong, at the moment.

For what's worth, the difficulty in FFT is infamously front-loaded, because your class and skill options are limited and the maps don't help. There's an entire wing in your local controller graveyard named after Dorter Trade City.

I only played FFT once, years ago, and I remember very little about it, but reading "Dorter Trade City" just made me instinctively furrow my brow in anger. I remember.

Dorter always worked out, somehow, though it always seemed to be more luck than anything (except, maybe, for a bit of tactics, but I never feel like I have that much to work with. I generally either make it the first or second time. Surprisingly, when I first played the game, I made it through pretty easily, and was surprised to learn how it was a sort of newbie-killer.

Anyway, Argath isn't in my party anymore. "But we are still friends, right?" No, go away you inhuman piece of garbage. I can't wait to punch you in the face.

Are the FF X games regarded as good? All this talk of the PS3 and Vita stores reminded me of the fact that I‘d bought the remasters of X and X-2 several years ago and had forgotten to play them.

In my experience Dorter is very strange in that a party of Squires (maybe Knights) and Chemists do just fine, but if you introduce anything more complicated than "instant heals by throwing potions" or "just hit the guy with a sword", it gets a lot more complicated quickly.

Which is weird, because you're probably right at the point where you're wanting to try out those new jobs you unlocked! But magic isn't worth the wait to charge up, you'll get mobbed. Archers aren't a great option with all the stuff in your way and the enemies who start on the rooftops limiting your options. Knights' extra HP is welcome (if you managed to nab some heavier armor in Eagrose way back when) but ignore their debuff skills, just stab guys.

Yes. X is a classic mainline-type FF about an underwater soccer himbo. X2 is less plot focused but has very fun battle mechanics and open design. Both worth your time* and provide different flavors of game experience.

*X has some egregious end-game optional content that some people find too egregious and some story elements that some players find too silly even for 2000-era Squaresoft camp.

So X is still prior to the Final Fantasy games getting...troubled developments? Was Sakaguchi still with the franchise?

A few liner notes when they sent over the script for the English VAs to read would have been nice. Tidus is supposed to be... hypersensitive, maybe? Not really moody, but he's the kind of guy whose emotions overflow and he finds himself crying a lot. But nobody told the English VAs that, so everyone calls him a crybaby through the first third of the game for no real reason.

X is indeed a good time, and X-2 blows it out of the water.

Though im in the minority that holds it in quite that high of a regard

Both are excellent games. X has probably my favourite setting and definitely my favourite battle system of any FF. X-2 is just plain fun, and it-s job system is great. The only reason why I don't like it too much is, that the battle system is TOO fast paced, for my taste. But I'm pretty alone with that problem, I think.
