SHOCK! Sairagg Falls
TROUBLE! Rahanimu the Furious Fishman

Thanks for the spoilers, episode title. Now I know that there’s going to be a fishman.
Yes but how will Zelgadis dispatch the fishman?

(he/him)
I finished up this week's episodes yesterday, had a bit of a delay. Most everyone's covered my points, so my takeaways are pretty slim.

Question - Started out giving major side-eye to the writers, and then switched to middle fingers with the writers with the Dragon that didn't need to be.

Return! - They didn't come quite out and say this is a clone of Rezo yet, but since all the Vrooooom(s) are apparently fine with being clones, I assume Rezo's one too. It gets into some ethical quandries, ala The Prestige or The Swapper. Do all the clones just not have agency over their own lives, or are they fine just being chum for the protagonists? Is that something that the cloning process removes from them, or is it more of a zen "we're all one with the universe" type of existence? What will they do if their task is complete, just stand there and wait for Aeris/Rezo to give them new instructions?

Evil Eris/Aeris is a fun character design. Looks like an extra from Fist of the North Star or Mad Max. She's better than boring old Rezo retread.

Oh yeah, new character from the intro finally appears. Would've been nice if she wasn't just a puppy dog to Gourry. There's time for that to flesh out, but I'm guessing because it took this long for her to show up and you all have more knowledge than me, it won't go very far.

Got Zel back, fine. I didn't hate his old voice, and didn't hear the new one enough to make a big impression. I'd rather have his henchmen back TBH.

My favourite aspect of Slyphiels character, and possibly the only thing the show really does with her comes much later, in season 4 or 5 where she’s outraged when she meets up with the rest of the party again, because every time they meet up, her life becomes immeasurably worse. And she has become aware of this tendency.

Still has the hots for Gourry though.

Purple

(She/Her)
I just kind of have to assume Gourry's entire life has been spent with a series of random concerned people finding him wandering around and making sure that he gets regular access to food, water, and bandits.
250

Presumably the day he met Lina there was some random shop owner he was supposed to report back to about roughing people up in exchange for food and shelter, and I would say it's actually a bit tragic to consider that they just basically lost their human-shaped puppy that day, but, also that whole town got Dragon Slaved, so, I guess everything worked out.
250

The other thing going on in these episodes is a whole hell of a lot of shipping bait.

Anyway, other than a lot of demonstrations of how much it sucks to be Sylphiel, we've got some fun business with the villains trying to be all dramatic but needing to wait a moment because now that we finally have a full party there's a serious backlog of bouncing off eachother's quirks to get through, and the wonderful business with looking into what's up with clones getting so astoundingly and weirdly derailed, and of course, we have our second fishman. Tries to top Noonsa by being quirkier and you know, being able to fly, but ultimately I find him less memorable. Gourry meanwhile finds that he has sexy legs, and this being-into-fishmen from Gourry is totally foreshadowing for something like... 70 episodes from now. Or gets a callback. Or is just a random coincidence when your show is that long.

Oh and we also properly reveal the full extent to which casting Giga Slave is kind of a bad idea even in a last-resort situation.

Also what feels like a joke about how carrying capacity scales in D&D maybe.

And so begins the grand tradition of Slyphiel just having the worst day when she meets up with the much more memorable and fun main cast. These two episodes also show off exactly how screwed everyone was in the last Rezo arc; last time he just sent henchmen after everyone because he was too busy.

Now he’s actually fighting in earnest and is just absolutely stomping everyone without any kind of effort (save for needing a nap in a goop-chair afterward). And this being just the dime-store knockoff version of Rezo really shows off how tough the original would have been if he didnt immediately turn into Shabranigdo, which was acknowledged as an independent threat.

Then everyone heck’s off for a goofy bit of explaining what Copies are, and hijinks ensue, and Sylphiel is really into the idea of having an extra Gourry or two hanging around. Yeah, get it girl!

Then Rezo blows up Sairagg, and Lina is surprised And shocked that someone could do such a thing because she doesn’t do a heck of a lot of introspection.

Shock! - I really enjoyed the exterior layout of the cloning Sorcerer's house. Instead of breaking down the door, I thought they would have to call up the Once-ler on the Whisper-ma-phone. Tiny Gourry and Tiny Lina royal rumble was adorably cute, and a good diversion for the first half. I wish the dub voice acting for the cloning scientists matched their designs, though. Their bloodshot eyes and spastic mannerisms should've meant the voices were creepy and manic, but they were just normal NPC voices.

New Rezo is really going for the Darth Vader vibe, with the recharging station and taking out half a town in the blink of an eye. Could've done without the fake creepy laugh, though. Brooding is a much better villain posture.

SHOCK!: I think the full title of this episode is trying to tell me something but I'm not sure what.

With the main party of four now together, plus 5th guest character Sylphiel, the series can finally start with my favorite running joke: everyone intentionally and inadvertently dunking on Zelgadis. He tries so hard to be the brooding badass type but the facade always cracks against the trio of Lina, Gourry, and Amelia.

The diversion to the clone lab is funny, and I love that Sylphiel just goes along with the cloning Gourry experiment as he's asking for her help. That and the way she's contently watching the tubes as her second Gourry is growing reveals a subtle darker side to Sylphiel that we don't see enough of. There's the bit in season 2 when she reveals she learned the effing Dragon Slave in order to be on Lina's level I guess.

I kinda wish she got to keep one of the mini-Gourrys, it'd make a good pet for her.

But as the party decide to head straight to Rezo's secret lab to loot the place stop him they get ambushed by the baddie and after a brief ANIME FIGHT between him and Zel he decides he just needs to flex and casts a Mega Brand (that spell Lina used at the end of the wedding episode) which promptly levels Sairaag. Rezo has clearly been doing some power leveling if he got his magic stat THAT high.

Oh and Sylphiel has the heartbreaking loss of her father, but if that's the worst thing that'll ever happen to her it's not so bad.

The juxtaposition of Rezo leveling Sairaag here against Lina casually doing the same to the village in the very first episode is... weird. I guess it's safe to say she's morally grey.

(and yes, Rezo's theme music does do a lot of heavy lifting for his overall presence)

TROUBLE!: But enough tragedy, time for some SHENANIGANS! Well, almost. Really this episode is half fallout from the end of the previous episode and half wacky battle against a singing, flying fishman. Say what you will of Rahanimu, dude has a style and is committed to it.

So the party mourns the tragic loss of Sairaag and its people. Or, half of it? They seem to imply some of the city survived the blast but we never see any of those survivors, nor do they seem to come looking for who is responsible for who dropped a magic nuke on them. We just know for sure that Sylphiel's dad is dead. That is very important. So important that Zel has to make sure to spell that out when asking for her help just in case she forgot. Such a considerate guy, that Zel!

But after some more shipping bait between Gourry and Sylphiel, and another haha boob joke at Lina's expense, Rahanimu arrives to absolutely shatter any emotional weight that was building. Amelia and Zel get a chance to start bonding in the middle of the fight, and Zel once again has to save Lina from a freaky fish guy.

Oh and Gourry and Sylphiel get separated from the rest for a bit and he has yet another match with Zangulus, who almost gets the upper hand before Sylphiel interferes. We see that the merc has just a little bit of honor (maybe???) as Gourry observes he could have struck her down but pulled back, but despite having Gourry in a weakened position without his weapon Zangulus decide to withdraw yet again. Gosh I hope they wrap up this little rivalry soon, why I figure I can take exactly one more episode of this!

It’s okay to blow up a town if it’s for the sake of a punchline.

This is also basically the mindset that the Joker uses.

Shock! - the “oh my god this is just D&D” continues, with the GM trying to deliver some exposition and the players going “wait… let’s try something!”

The actual destruction of the city is … Surprisingly well handled. When Lina levels a city with Dragon Slave it’s generally shown as causing a lot of cosmetic damage. Rezo just fucking annihilates everything.

Trouble continues the series’ run of surprisingly well-choreographed gag fights. The sword duel is a neat reveal, as it basically implies that both Gourry and Zangulus are calibrating their power super carefully. The army of Chimera are mostly mooks, but there’s still some fun gimmicks, and Amelia evacuating because Zelgadis casts a maximized fireball is well timed.

Gourry holding the enormous stack of wood? Also hilarious.

I believe episode 1 allowed Lina to level the town as a comedic beat (well, and to show off the kind of power she wields) because the inhabitants were already fleeing from the dragon, and were mostly out of harm's way, whereas Copy Rezo went Akiraball without warning, while everyone was sleeping.

The Slayers spell system also gives me the impression that the Dragon Slave is aimed at a set target --hence the initial beam-- and that the mass destruction is the result of the magical shockwave, and the farther away you are from ground zero, the better your chances; on the other hand, something like Mega Brando is specifically a wide area-of-effect explosion, and the damage at the fringes is the same as at the center. That Copy Rezo managed to scale it up to Dragon Slave levels is what makes his power so horrifying.

I appreciated the nod to how, for all their power and skill, even genius spellcasters need time to set up their spells, as both Zel and Lina were at times either caught flatfooted or simply could not counter their opponents' speed. It levels the playing field at least a bit in a world where casters are horribly overpowered.

Also--hey, LIna just called out "there's a guild of dark sorcerers who specialize in chimeras just around the corner" and no one thought anything of it, like, these guys are clearly evil and doing evil things but they're just part of the ecosystem so we'll just consult with them for a bit and be on our way. :p

Trouble! - Honestly, I watched this episode only 6 hours ago, and I've forgotten most of it. The big monster battle was okay I guess, though this fishman didn't have quite the same abilities as the last one. There was some stuff with Gourry and Sylphiel, but Gourry's oblivious/ace so Sylphiel's not getting anywhere. Rezo's charged up enough to become Mumm-Ra, the Ever Living, so we'll see how that goes down next time.

I kind of like how the team was split down the middle between being utterly horrified at Rezos power and casual cruelty… and just shrugging and saying “Well, guess we know who the next boss monster is, huh?”

Lina ain’t one to turn down a hot bath just because it was created by incinerating a densely populated area

I have a much better idea of what to expect from one as opposed to the other!

I know it's a running gag that Slayers is a D&D campaign (probably even more of one than Lodoss is), but, man, you can basically hear the dice rolls in UPSET!, huh? But it did give us the excellent Flare Carrot visual gag, and interesting "boss mechanics" for Zangulus' rebounding Howling Wind, so we're all good. And we got plenty shipping dynamics on top of that, too.

OTOH, the localization choice to translate Mazoku as "Monster" is really hurting now, with Tiiba losing a lot of impact (comedic and dramatic) from being called "a monster" in contrast to the scary-looking Mazoku summoned earlier by Real Rezo.

Moreover, UPSET teaches us all about the important of not splitting up the party in a dungeon crawl, and not taking the time to multi-class if you don’t know what you’re doing ahead of time.

Not sure if it was an error with the audio in the dub, with the production of the episode, or maybe just my DVD copy being weird, but there were a few instances of everyone reacting strongly to total silence; most notably when Zel realizes Amelia fell into a trap. Anyone else notice that or just me?

Also, kinda weird that the episode opens with Zangulus tying a bandage around his head, because his face was caved in in the last episode, and then immediately untying it so it could dramatically blow away in the breeze. Genuinely unsure if that was supposed to be the gag, or he was dramatically untying his bandage and the animation team made a mistake.

I found it VERY amusing that the DM immediately regretted shunting the the Cleric/Monk and the Shaman/Fighter to a vacant library, since there was nothing interesting going on there and the S/F actually plopped down to do his own thing, and so they decided to immediately merge two groups together for a big action scene and give their latest member something cool to do.

UPSET: Finally! The match of the century! Several episodes in the making! Despite losing to Gourry at each and every turn, at best coming to a draw once or twice, Zangulus wants to prove once and for all who the better swordsman is!

(it's Gourry)

Some great group dynamics in this episode, for the time they're all together anyway. Gourry unlocking the final dungeon, which is why the Sword of Light was needed, was a cool moment, particularly Lina's congratulation of him. It might seem a bit random that Rezo would lock this place up and have it only accessible by something he didn't even have, but maybe there's some weird magical reason for it? Sairaag was where the original swordsman of light slew Zannafar, after all, so perhaps some residual magical nonsense connected to the Sword of Light had something to do with it? I dunno, I'm just spitballing.

The group splitting up is just a means to an end, since the big blade-wielder brawl needed Gourry alone to properly get going. This was the perfect moment to develop more of the Zel/Amelia dynamic that was totally wasted (can't search, reading), but Lina and Sylphiel together provided some interesting moments. And as Zef mentioned, Flare Carrot was a great visual gag.

Anyway, the group reunites, Gourry wins the battle, and THIS TIME Zangulus is gracious in defeat. I guess since Gourry went and broke his dang sword he didn't have the means to keep fighting. Fortunately the whole 'trying to kill them' thing is brushed under the rug as he offers some crucial-but-not-actually information and Gourry and Zangulus part with ANIME RIVAL RESPECT.

VICE: I...... absolutely forgot about Tiiba. Seriously, I just memory holed his appearance. By the title I thought this episode was about something that happens next time, but I guess every final dungeon needs a random mid-boss to challenge the party. Just by the virtue of being a Chicken Demon he's more memorable than some other side characters, but nevertheless I forgot.

Anyway, after some fun dungeon crawling the party comes across The One Who Was Left Behind (he's a chicken) and strongarm him into leading them to Rezo's Legacy. He does so, but it's a double-cross and he unleashes his true power and turns into an even bigger chicken.

Granted, Giga-Tiiba does strike a more menacing figure. Not a bad mid-boss design at all.

Things look bad but the MacGuffin they're after literally falls in their lap (or on Lina's head) and I guess it has a +50% Magic Damage property because Lina turns things around and obliterates Tiiba.

But there's still four episodes left and despite having Rezo's Legacy in their hands for all of a minute, the baddies show up and snatch it from them. Shoulda held on tighter, Lina.

Oh and Rezo's Legacy is a manuscript from the 'Claire Bible'. Whatever that is. Probably not important.

These were both fun dungeon-diving episodes. We even see Rezo's party cheating with shortcuts, and a no-encounters cheat code! And apparently Rezo had a sense of humor? Well we know he loved to laugh....

I had completely forgotten the specifics of "Rezo's Legacy", so Eris's reveal that it was a Claire Bible manuscript actually did make me gasp and grin, and now I'm looking forward to seeing its contents but especially its fate, given, well, Slayers Next and all.

Upset: This is what happens when you're playing HeroQuest and don't SEARCH FOR TRAPS every time you turn a corner. Also, they need to take a hint from MYST games and always do a 360 degree pass through a room before moving on, especially behind doors and under staircases.

I wish that Eris was more interesting, instead of just an internal monologue. "I'm gonna be the real big bad, you'll see!" but we know we won't see. Her spunky spikes would better suit someone with more flair.

Oh, and the dub definitely had some production issues both with this one, and in the first half of the next one. Weird silences, moreso than just trying to match lip "flaps". I haven't finished the next one yet, will do that on tomorrow's workout. Also, the Funimation iPad app had some weird glitches, which caused some artifacting and audio screeching a few times.

Bit late to the chatty party this week and I guess there isn't much left to mention. We split people up some to see how different people bounce off eachother and Sylphiel+Lina doesn't really have legs. Like any good caster heavy party we properly take some time out so the one pure fighter can get in some solid Fighter Time. Dungeons are fun. And yeah, we vaguely mention the McGuffin of which the hunting of is the excuse driving the whole second season's plot, so that's neat.

Vice: Chicken Boo's kinda fun, though I wish he woulda gone through a few costume changes trying to disguise himself as a human. Whole lotta dead air in the dub, it's like they didn't receive matching backing tracks for the episodes and had to just sub in old foley/music from earlier episodes. Still waiting on Rezo and Eris to do something, but the title of the next episode suggests one of them may buck that trend. It's been a few days since Rezzy slaughtered hundreds to thousands of people without a shred of remorse, so he's gotta be getting antsy.
