If I were to buy a next generation console, and I currently have no interest in doing so, I would probably buy a Series X/S first. Backward compatibility matters to me, and these systems have the most comprehensive BC we've seen since the Game Boy Advance.
I just want to know more about the Series game pad, though. I might just buy one for my Xbox One S if it's compatible and the D-pad is really as good as the rumors suggest. (And the rumors of thumbstick drift are exaggerated. Why is this a problem with this console generation specifically?)

I haven’t put the Series controller to the test yet (didn’t realize it was any different than the One) but the D-pad clicks

The Series X and One controllers are very similar. There's a dedicated share button now, the D-pad is clicky, and the backside of the controller and shoulder buttons are textured instead of smooth plastic. But aside from those things, it feels just like a One controller.
The only game I've played on my Series X is Battlefield 5 - thanks, Game Pass - and it was fine.

Gotta say; I was not expecting the difference between the One and the Series X for enhanced games;
Maneater isn’t exactly a striking AAA cinematic experience or anything, but it looks and plays vastly better on this thing. And there’s, like, no load times on anything!

I'm probably gonna wait on an Xbox Series system, but I would like to know if an S would be good enough or if I should go all the way with an X. It sounds like the S isn't even as powerful as their Xbox One X, and it seems like that would cause compatibility and performance issues later down the line.

My understanding is the Series S GPU is a little weaker than the One X, but the CPU is much stronger. Generally if they optimize specifically for Series S, they run better than they do on the One X, but there are a bunch of legacy games optimized for the One X that run better on the One X.
That said, I wouldn’t recommend Series S unless you predominantly plan on playing Gamepass games, what with the smaller storage and no disc drive.

I love my Series X. I'd just save up for that. Because few if any new exclusives, i've been playing old games of various sorts.
Gears 5 - so i started playing this on One X on 1080 TV
Then on 1X on 4k 60fps
Now SX on 4K 120FPS
Each one of these was a massive upgrade in performance and graphics, for a game I know inside and out. Very impressive!

Is there any degree of downgrade between the retail and gamepass release of a game?
I was playing Fallen Order on the One previously, and there were parts that had so much stuttering and dropped frames that the game was barely playable, and I wasn’t sure if that was a Gamepass struggling with an overworked internet connection thing or that part of the game being buggy or what.

The GamePass "version" of a game is just the game. GamePass games are also not streamed, they're downloaded fully, so I'm not sure how an internet connection would matter there. (The only caveat here is if you're in the beta for xCloud streaming on PC, etc.)
Fallen Order also had some framerate issues in certain spots on PS4, so it just might be the game.

One negative with playing Gamepass/PS Now versions of games downloaded on your system is if they have DLC it’s usually not included. Gamepass let’s you buy the DLC, but that just seems like an unsound idea to be buying DLC for games you don’t actually own...

I broke down and bought an Xbox Series controller from ShopGoodwill. At least, I think that's what it is; it claims to be compatible with that and like four other machines on the side. I'd be excited that it only cost $23.77, but the usual extortionate shipping price ShopGoodwill charges cranked the price up to nearly forty dollars. Lovely. (I guess they're sixty brand new? That's still not bad!)
So I guess I'll get a chance to experience the clicky goodness when the controller arrives, after SGW stops dragging ass and decides to ship it. For a company that charges boku bucks for shipping, they sure take their sweet time actually DOING it.

Eh, worked well enough for me. I plan to grab Sonic Forces when I see it at a good price (ideally physically), but grabbed all the DLC now, just to be on the safe side.

So Scarlet Nexus is on Gamepass now, and I’m conflicted.
On one hand, while after the demo I wasn’t interested enough in taking the plunge to buy this, I’ll gladly give it another go on Gamepass.
On the other hand, I kind of feel bad for the devs since the general vibe I got for this game was everyone was waiting for it to be put on Gamepass, despite them repeatedly saying it wasn’t coming there. Kind of feel like they got bullied into cutting their losses here.
On the other other hand, maybe they should have read the room on the state of the Japanese market and targeted a Switch release instead for their anime infused action rpg if they wanted to stick to standard business models? At the very least they could have tried to not look like a slower paced Astral Chain…

Well, since we don't know how these contracts work, I'm not sure we should feel bad. As far as we know, it could be profitable for them - I hope they get to enjoy this water faucet while it lasts.
(personally I didn't have more than a passing interest on it but now that it's on Gamepass I might give it a spin)
I'm a little intrigued, but it might need to wait until after I've given Avengers a go -- that's a game born for Game Pass.
Unrelated, but I've been having some troubles with my Series X lately. Namely, it won't detect media streaming from my PC unless we actually plug it in, but it's the only device that seems to have the problem. My wife's laptop, further away, receives it fine. It was working before, but just suddenly... stopped.
The other thing is that I can't view "This Week on Xbox" on YouTube apps on my Xbox or Smart TV. It throws an "age restriction" at me, even though that wasn't a problem before, and isn't on my phone or desktop, and the instructions to add my birthday to my profile there don't work. The show streams on Xbox as well from the home menu, but it's kind of random, and I can't find it anywhere else, so I'm at the mercy of whether it shows up there or not. I was instructed to check the menu at the very bottom of the home menu, "More Suggestions" or something, but it's not there.
These things have tech support (which isn't anyone at Microsoft, unfortunately) suggesting that I need to send it in for repairs. D=
I'm hanging on for now, though, as it's not so much trouble that I want to miss out on some of the upcoming releases, not to mention the Castlevania marathon Nadia and I are streaming each week to count down to Halloween.

MS reportedly spends a lot of money on its gamepass games. To the degree that it's a very common opinion that there's no chance it's sustainable over the long haul. I don't particularly feel bad here. Especially when it's not like the PS4 is a graveyard for anime-ish games (they do very well there) and most people interested in anime-ish games by and large aren't going to xbox for them to begin with. This is an easy revenue stream for them after the initial sales window naturally peters out, odds are they're doing quite well I'm sure.
Once again, procrastination is the wisest move!

External HDDs in the X can only play games not native to the X itself, so it helps only if you have a bunch of 360 and One games.
(also, ironically, having a external HDD helps a lot in a One because the USB connection for external HDDs is faster than the one used for internal HDDs)
Does that apply to One games that aren’t optimized only, or all of them?
Yeah, well, the problem with MS having such a fuzzy line between generations is that some optimized One games are native Series X games and other are fancied up One games... so the answer is complicated
