The Sandman is coming to Netflix

Is there a consensus on what’s the best box set or otherwise of the comic to buy? I’m thinking I may lobby for us picking it up as a big Christmas purchase. I’m guessing this show’s gotta lead to a reprint or something, right?

Here's a good summary of the various editions. They've been selling well as TPBs since the 90s, and so there are a lot of different editions in print. I would suggest one of paperback versions if you actually want to seriously read it.

The most affordable current paperback version unfortunately says A Netflix Series on the cover, which will be funny/depressing if it doesn't get renewed. The last book of that isn't out until 2023, and although that's all supplemental material maybe that's a dealbreaker if you want the whole thing as a set at once. Some of the hardback editions are larger and more expensive which can be nice for show or for browsing but can be annoying to read for real.

The Anniversary Editions are another set of paperbacks that are more expensive but they're all released, and they don't say "A Netflix Series" on them.

I watched through 24/7 tonight and I think that was the first episode I felt was actually pretty good and About Something. The one with Lucifer had one neat moment, I guess, but yeah I'm more on board now.

more and more i think that how a person reacts to that diner ep is indicative of how they will appreciate the show. because very clearly i missed something there, as i found it unwatchably bad and felt the show as a whole would be better if that ep didn't exist, which is the minority position here.

I could see an argument to be made that it was a bit on-the-nose, or overwrought, or just Too Extra. But it stood out to me because all the previous eps felt extremely low-key and placid, and this one was... not.

If it’s the part I’m thinking of, it made me sick to my stomach in the comic and I might just skip it when the show gets there.

24 Hours is a tonal shock in the original too, so it sounds like the show is a close adaptation for good or ill.

Really tho, all this early stuff is messy. I donno if it would be possible to start the show in a different place or if the fans would froth at the mouth. There's enough important set-up stuff in the first two volumes that its seems justifiable to do a straight adaptation, but I would have preferred to see something that jumped to seasons of mists and filled in the backstory obliquely.

I think the complicated part is that the original does very effective serialized storytelling by taking these seemingly inconsequential fits and starts from when the series hadn't found its legs yet and and making them consequential to future developments and also the resolution of the series in very satisfying ways. If this gets a complete adaptation, the show will be able to recreate that.

I thought the diner episode was the turning point between "this is a pretty boring WB style comic tv show" into something that was actually interesting. It was graphic and disturbing, but I didn't feel like it was trying to go edgelord. It being mostly a bottle episode without Morpheus for the most part helped, because he didn't have a personality for the first half. They established everyone's characters and roles extremely quickly, even though it was mostly surface with everyone having One Big Thing underneath.

I get that it turns people off for the same reasons that it resonated with me, though. It's reminiscent of a Stephen King short story or novella, and I devoured everything he'd written when I was in elementary school, so I'm imprinted on that type of thing.

I enjoyed the second half of the bonus (?) 11th episode, and while I enjoyed the animation quality of the first half, the sad bit - you'll know what I'm talking about if you've seen it - was quite upsetting and to be honest ruined that whole part for me. I'd have preferred more suggestion as to what that prick did, not what they fucking showed and what you could fucking hear while he did it.

Just finished up everything but the bonus ep, and I enjoyed it a lot. As an old Sandman fan (but one who admittedly hasn’t re-read much in ages) I thought it pretty much nailed the line between super-faithful adaptation and changes to make things work in the medium. Not much else to say because I pretty much agree with everything estragon said a couple pages ago.

Sound of her Wings + bonus Hob was probably my fave of the season. My only mild criticism is I felt like in a few bits in the Rose arc the acting was a little stilted, but I think that was mostly just the younger characters growing into their roles.

I finished up the main series (haven't gotten to the bonus ep yet) the other day and overall I really liked it. The Sound of Her Wings was a particularly strong, if not heartrending, episode in the first half that swerved to a fun story in the second.

I really hope it gets renewed. I think it's a really strong start, but like the comics it has plenty of room to grow, and I think they've shown they can do a faithful, quality adaptation. Maybe let Dream's hair get crazier again or something. That's all.

I just got to the Sound of her Wings. I was okay with things up til then but will watch the rest on the strength of that episode alone. I do recall loving these two arcs in the comic as well.

They did a real good job with the transition to film.
