The SaGa Thread

The history screen is new, and looks to be helpful for recreating combos you've discovered

The combo history screen is not new, unless it was removed from the English PSX release (which is possible, I haven't played this game in English since 1998). I just opened a save on my old Vita playthrough to double check, and it was definitely there in the original Japanese game. So, it's either restoring a feature deleted from the English release, or it was always there. Not sure.

Huh! I def don't remember anything like that in the OG game. I might be misremembering though. It's been a long time since I sat down with it in any depth.

Edit: estragon where in the menus is it in the Japanese version? I'm trying to verify if it's in the English release now.

Yeah, I don't think that was in the English release? Could be wrong but I sure don't remember it.

It's between Items and Formation (or whatever else they called managing who's in what party) in Japanese.

It's just on the main menu, so it's like..

Status
Items
Combos
Formation
etc...

The English PSX game didn't display proper names for combos, just "Level x Combo!" for a combo of x moves, so I guess they took out the history screen because it would make no sense.

I am 99% sure it is not in the English release.

I could see there being an issue localizing the automated combo name system leading to it being cut.

If that's the case case, it's restored content for the English release.

Yeah that makes sense.

Finished that SaGa 4 fangame, and it's alright save for a few odd design decisions.

tl;dp -
Mechanically it's basically SaGa 1/2 while using assets from all 3 GB games.
Humans are stat grown like in 1, Mutants have some weird binary mutation choice occasionally after combat. Apparently one choice pulls from a fixed list, while the other option is context dependent (random NPC text from a third of the way through).
Robots and Monsters are basically the same as in SaGa 2.
Difficulty curve is basically this really odd U shape, as the getting started is as rough as it typically is in early SaGas while the endgame is marked by a rather odd increase in boss difficulty. You can run from pretty much anything but trap box/tile encounters, so your grind is very much YMMV. Everything up to the second to last world boss fight is pretty trivial.
By the same token, fight/monster/gear design is pretty flat? Yeah, you've got a variety of monster species and/or elemental weaknesses to target for one-hit kills, but you only ever reliably have access to undead killers and fire/ice/lightning weapons, and pretty much every boss resists weapon and primary element damage which then screws over humans and robots until endgame when Laser/non-element stuff becomes available.
Mutants are 1/2 Mutants, and can mutate Resist Weapon and Resist All (everything else). Like always, build em for Mana, stuff a Heal staff or Flare book in their hands and you're done.
Didn't run a monster PC in this, but the post fight meat prompt will tell you what result you'll get it looks like from the dialog window. There's also a couple of meat shops scattered here and there as well.

did i do all of that?

That's... what I want, actually (stat growth-wise, anyway). Only reason I haven't played it yet is I'd have to play it on PC, not on original Gameboy hardware like I originally thought it would be playable on. Oh well, I'll check it out eventually, I'm sure.

I didn't see it myself but the scuttlebutt on twitter is that during the official release date stream Kawazu said that they were working on a new game and remasters for Romancing SaGa 1, Frontier 2, and Unlimited.

I'd be curious if a Romancing SaGa 1 remaster would be based on the WS version or Minstrel Song, more SNES loyal but with some of the cut content or the fancy pants remake that is extremely good.

However a Romancing SaGa 1 remaster is happening, I am glad that it's happening. Also it's awesome the other games are receiving this treatment too; maybe people will be more open to what Unlimited SaGa does now that it won't cost $50.

It's a good time to be a SaGa fan.

Man I hope the new SaGa they're working on goes back to the sci-fi genre.

unlimited saga has cost $5 for at least 15 years now and could use some rebalancing i can't help but doubt it'll get more than any other game i've ever played

Unlimited is definitely the game I’m most fascinated by, but getting the remakes of SaGa 2 and 3 would put me over the moon.

The very moon

I honestly think the DS SaGa 3 remake is the most accessible game in the series, while also definitely being a SaGa game. It would be so easy to recommend to people interested in the franchise as the go to place to start if only it had an official release outside of Japan.

i'm not going through the ~3 hour stream to find out

I'm putting it on in the background. We'll see if I make it all the way through.

I'll take all of those remasters, please and thank you! My dream of owning all SaGa games on one console (Switch) in one form or another may actually be a reality. Amazing.

Kazin

did i do all of that?

I haven't played SaGa Frontier yet, and I intend to - but even if I don't end up enjoying it, it is absolutely lovely to see this series constantly updated and available.

omg

Unlimited SaGa might be the most disappointing game I ever bought, next to maybe Front Mission 4. But having read the opinions of y'all on what it is trying to do, and the best way to engage with the game after the fact, it's clear a lot of my disappointment was a series of mismatched expectations. But even with that aside, I still can't see it being something I'd enjoy. Abstracting the environments to the degree that game does, while having a much more limited ambition with regards to storytelling is just not what I really want in an RPG. I look forward to seeing how a port of it ends up though, that game has stupid good art direction, and I'd just enjoy seeing all its assets in HD.

Final Fantasy Legend 3 is probably my favorite GB game of all time, next to Link's Awakening, so I've been waiting for that game to get a remaster or port or whatever for decades.

SaGa Frontier II will get me as horny as y'all have been for Frontier, pls hurry Square-Enix ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

Did you know about the SaGa collection they released on Switch? It had SaGa/FFL 1-3 all together. Came out just a few months ago

Not a remaster at all, though. Only change is tiny translation bits and a double speed (that doesn’t speed up music).

TLDR:
- SaGa Frontier HD sold far better than expected
- The best selling version of the game was for Switch, but the Steam-PC version was the biggest surprise regarding exceeding sales projections
- Kawazu's intent is to remaster Romancing SaGa, SaGa Frontier II, and Unlimited SaGa and is planning on doing so, but can't make any promises
- Some of those games represent much more challenging remaster propositions - specifically Unlimited SaGa would take significant
revamping the content" before it could be rereleased.

I wonder what their expectations were for the PC version of Frontier. It was always the most popular SaGa game outside of Japan, so if they were expecting sales similar to RS2 & 3, it makes sense that they'd get a lot more on PC.

The article also mentions a new title in development, which I've seen mentioned a few other places as well, but there doesn't seem to be any information about it beyond that they're working on it.

Going at the rate they have been for the past few years, Square would likely put out a SaGa Frontier 2 remaster around the beginning of 2023, making Unlimited the next one in line, and I was wondering whether they would really release that game again and baffle a new generation of players. If they make a lot of changes to it, like way more than they did even for Frontier, it might not be so baffling. The redemption of Unlimited Saga in the public consciousness, decades later, would be pretty cool to see.

Unlimited Saga would absolutely fare better in the current climate, I think. Give it proper documentation and I could see it finally gaining a following. Though I’m curious how much a revamp would change.

They’re getting tantalizingly close to having some version of every game in the series available on Switch. I wonder if the system’s lifespan will be long enough to become the ultimate SaGa machine.

Games like that, I don't see why not. It shouldn't be hard to have it be a dual release with the Switch and whatever follow-up system they have (or let it just be Switch with BC).
