Sort of! You can't do them at the same time, but you can totally do both with the same lead character. It's possible to get the Arcane gift for all your guys, get a few more guys, then go get the Rune gift for them.

The problem is that progression is so randomized and development so slow that you might feel like you need to go do everything just to have something to do while you fight monsters a lot.

I've seen observations about how since they're restoring some Asellus content maybe they're also changing a lot of other stuff that they're not advertising but I don't think that's likely to happen.

At some point they said that the Asellus new content could be toggled on and off when you start her scenario, so unless they've changed course it should either (1) be contained to her scenario or (2) if there is other new content, you will probably also know about it as soon as you start that characters' scenario since they're letting you toggle it on/off.

I would not buy this expecting more new stuff than they're already announcing. Also, I'm skeptical that the new content would dramatically change the structure of Asellus' quest. If so, that would be a big downgrade because a it's fairly unique and cool approach for a JRPG, and I think that's intentional and not something they would attempt to "fix." My assumption is just a few new story events.

If the New Game+ features continue across characters I have never been more likely to actually complete this game 7 (8!) times

Yeah I'm still wondering if this is how it will work. I guess that's how it works in Scarlet Grace though, so I imagine it'll be the same here. And it wouldn't be nearly as fun if it didn't work that way.

Based on what we know of the cut Asellus content, all the current structure would still be there, there would just be new, more traditional events that you have to do in addition to
the randomly-encountered bosses

The cut content from Asellus's quest was in-character investigation of what it means to be a half-mystic, from Dr. Nusakan, the Bio Research Lab in Shrike, and the weird half-petrified art hall in the Magic Kingdom.

Don't remember ever going to those? You might not! They were in the released game but no plot points ever asked you to go there. The Bio Research Lab was a good grinding spot since monsters were stronger than usual. Particularly good for Mystics, since you could find some of the best absorbable monsters there. And an optional superboss, I guess? But no plot.

The Bio Research Lab left the biggest impression on me. The music is great, and something really sinister has happened there, but you're left to fill in the details on your own.

The fact that the plot was cut kind of makes it more memorable, but it's still for the best it's getting restored.

It's a game about exploring a weird and wild set of worlds and the laboratory is literally in Asellus's neighbourhood as her story opens up--it was about the first place I went to as a result. Story-relevance has very little to do with how I remember and experienced the locations in Frontier, because so much of the game is evocative just through environment and habitat. It's cool if they have unused material to retrofit and restore the second time around, but because the rhetoric around the game for so long having been that it's "unfinished" that often gets applied to nearly every obscure or contentious creative decision they ever made with it, or read as an inherent flaw (see: Blue's ending). I guess my hope is that with as much of the planned material reinstated as possible, that narrative will shift into viewing the game's creative decisions if not as deliberate, then at least as worthwhile in how they materialized in the game that eventually shipped.

SaGa games sing after a second coat of paint, which is what makes this one especially exciting. Any baffling bits or bugs left in are now there for a reason, like the saw glitch in FFL.

I hope they keep the money exploit 😬

With the rerelease of SaGa Frontier incoming, I have been thinking about what I would tell a new player playing this game for the first time. I have thought about, if someone could travel back in time to the 90's and warn Wee Goggle Bob with pertinent information, what would I choose? What would be so important that it would HAVE to be relayed to properly enjoy SaGa Frontier? I have finally settled on one simple fact that I feel you all need to know if you're playing for the first time:

Princess White Rose does not have a perm. The pink/white "fluff" of her sprite is not her natural hair, but some kind of white rose-themed hat. She apparently has auburn hair under there.

Thank you. Please enjoy SaGa Frontier.

That's wild. I'm sure there are big differences in how inviduals interpret sprite art, and the varying contexts of playing this stuff on composite signal CRTs versus other display methods, but I think I just always read her appearance as intended.

1) Don't be afraid to look up a map for Despair if you start with Emilia.
2) Give up the LP so Asellus can get the Asura blade.
3) Don't go with Captain Hamilton until you've done everything else you want to do in Lute's scenario.
4) Default T260G is best 'cuz robots grow stronger with what you shove in their inventory and she has the most customizable slots.
5) Don't overuse Alkaiser, Red needs the stat gains and he ain't getting 'em when he morphs.
6) Learn how combos work, train a back-up for Mei-Ling.
7) Blue doesn't have to win unless you want to keep his sparked abilities.

New player tip: As has been tangentially mentioned in this and other posts, T260G is definitely a girl-robot. Please do not confuse her for a boy-robot. Also, you can rename her, but the "G" is mandatory. It is because she is Great.

In the promo video you can see that Ren is in Fuse's party at 6:42. So that's new. He wasn't around for Emelia's campaign the first time.

It's not like there's any shortage of IRPO members to recruit (Fuse, Silence, Doll, Cotton, and Rabbit are all canonically in IRPO) so I wonder what he has to add.

It's tempting to suggest a "fun club" type thing for the SF remake, but those haven't been successful for a good long time. An individual thread for it, once it comes out and folks are playing it, would be cool. I'd be interested in seeing what characters people decide to play, what things are interesting or difficult about them, etc.
If there was ever a time to attempt to revive Fun Club I think this would be it. Also I seem to remember the Legend of Mana one being pretty successful! We don't have the Hardcore Awesome/multiplayer forum anymore so I guess it would just be in this one?

Not really sure which version I should buy. Switch is probably the more convenient platform since it's mobile, but I'd rather see the art assets in as high a res as possible.

Is that combo history screen new info? I don't think I'd seen it before. In Unlimited Saga, saving a combo gave it a damage bonus based on how many times you had used it; if they're adding that feature to Frontier, the remaster is getting not only new story content, but new game mechanics as well. Pretty exciting!

The history screen is new, and looks to be helpful for recreating combos you've discovered, but I haven't read anything about it adding bonuses to your favorite combos

Ah, OK, I guess we'll see whether it actually does anything. Yeah, even if it's just a memory aid, it'll still be useful, especially for Riki.

I'd say go for Switch. This is probably one of those cases where there's not gonna be a huge difference (if any) between platforms.
