Just found out I somehow fucked up directional input? How did I manage to fuck this up this badly? Stupid.

That's an aftermarket dpad, which I find to be absolutely shitty, sometimes even with the original conductive pads. Alternatively, it could be a stray dot of solder or one of those copper wires or something.

Specifically, If I hold down B and left and hit A, that left input turns into a right input. No idea.

Yeah what the hell - could be a bad board or something. That's a weird one.

Issues like that sometimes have me convinced that electronics were a mistake.

Anyway I disassembled it and put it in storage. Maybe someday.

I remember how fucking down I was when I shorted out my Sega Nomad because I reversed the polarity of the add on battery pack I was assembling, so you have my sympathy (I didn't even want to post about it here on TT at first lol). I was legit sad, even though it's not like I can't play Genesis games elsewhere.

Built a GBA SP Slate!

I thought I bought red, but I apparently ordered purple, which turned out just fine actually as I like this color a lot! I actually really like the Slate more than I thought I would - removing the SP brightness button (brightness can be adjusted via Select+L/R like standard GBA mods) makes this shorter, and it's much thinner than I thought it'd be. The matte buttons I bought (not the aluminum ones) feel good, too. These ain't cheap, but I'm glad I built one... It wasn't difficult, either, just some light soldering and wire routing, really, and it's only three wires so it's not too difficult.

I just installed one of those GBA docks. My shell cutting is pretty sloppy, but it works! (apologies for crap picture, my phone sucks)

The hardest part, really, was seating the A/B cable in the connector properly. It's pretty tough to do like Tito says in the video - there isn't much room, and I did end up cutting some of the shell away underneath the ribbon cable to make it a little easier on myself. I also had to install a good amount of padding underneath the little USB-C connector board - there wasn't really anything for it to stick to, and it kept falling back into the shell a little, so that was annoying. Could be I have a different shell from Tito's, I dunno.

Anyway, it works pretty well, and while it won't charge your batteries, it will work with or without batteries installed on your TV! Though the RGRS website does say not to use it with batteries... I'm not sure how it'd work with rechargeable battery mods, as I don't have one.

The dock kits are really neat but I'm waiting for the inevitable all-in-one version: power + controls + HDMI-out in one thing.

Yeah. I sprung for this one since I already had an HDMI out kit installed, and figure the all in one version will need it's own total install on an unmodded GBA.

I needed a new project to help with stress, so I ordered a new shell for a truly disgusting AGS-001 I bought in a pawn shop back in March. It's also getting an IPS panel soonish since the front ight doesn't even work, and I might put in a 900mAH battery. I thought about giving it wireless charging but I don't want to over-complicate things again. It's nice to have a project to look forward to.

Post pictures when you're done, please! Your Gameboys are always a delight to look at.

I'm pretty happy with the lag on that HDMI out/controller mod, by the way - I've been playing the crap out of the Gameboy Game & Watch Galleries, and I was able to 5 star all four modes of Green House in G&WG3 with a SNES controller, which is quite difficult to do as you approach 1000 points imo. I was a bit concerned the lag would be a bit much for a game like that, but I had zero issues, thankfully.

Good news: Test fit looks great. Bad news: I broke the volume slider and had to order a new one from Aliexpress.

Aliexpress?! That'll take forty seven billion years to get to your door! Your next of kin and their descendants will have to finish your work for you!

Yeah it's not ideal but it's the only source I've found. I'm in no rush; I won't be ordering the screen for a little while anyway.

One annoying thing: the new shell has a soft-touch coating that feels amazing to hold, but makes it just barely too wide to fit in the drawers in my Game Boy box

I have a feeling this is just going to be another colossal failure.

Your standards are too high. Your colossal failures are everyone else's "hey, that's pretty nifty." I've seen some impressive stuff from you where hardware mods are concerned. If they don't work exactly as intended, it's not the end of the world... just take a break, clear your head, and come back to it later once you're refreshed and de-stressed.

If you want a "colossal failure," you should have seen what I did to my Nintendo DS while trying to make the D-pad more responsive. Broke the power switch, twice, forcing me to solder in a button as a replacement. I also put screws in the wrong places, making them jut outward through the plastic of the bottom screen. Comedy of errors right there.

I broke a Famicom Disk System drive pcb just screwing it back to-fucking-gether a few weeks ago. THAT is a colossal failure. At least your GBA would still run games even if you're unable to adjust the volume lol

I'll second that. I could barely manage the Retroid Pocket upgrade kit with help. What you're considering a failure is something I couldn't even attempt.

Hey I got my Pocket too! I haven't actually tried it out with my TV yet, how are you finding that?

It won't sync to any of my PS4 controllers and the first time I plugged it in it rebooted my whole TV setup and I had to unplug the Raspberry Pi so it would stop getting caught in boot errors. Also it deleted my Dragon Quest saves. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll report back when I get an 8bitdo controller and get to properly test it, but so far the Pocket has been a bit of a disappointment if I'm being honest.
