The Old Grey Brick, She Ain't What She Used To Be - A Game Boy Thread

Yeah, that looks gorgeous. A shame I missed out on buying a physical GBA cartridge...

GBA homebrew development tools have always been quite powerful and sensible (compared to other retro systems), so I'm kinda surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often.

It's also one of the easiest consoles to use from that era without resorting to Retrotinks and the like

I posted about that on Discord and nobody gave a shit, was thinking of making a thread but got discouraged. Sorry about that

I wanted to get a physical copy but I couldn't justify it without an option to get a digital version too, kinda regret it

I may have even seen it on Discord, got busy, then forgot about it, who knows. That's why I prefer the forum, threads can get bumped, instead of whatever someone posts in Discord being basically lost forever (unless you scroll back for miles but I don't do that). Always make the thread!

Sorry no one gave a shit on Discord, though. Stupid Discord.

Yeah, Discord has its moments but forums are much better for stuff like this. Goodboy Galaxy looks really cool, I'd love to see the GBA see more games like this

FINALLY got an order in from Japan today, was supposed to get here early October but was held by customs for... ever. Always make sure to fill out your customs forms accurately, folks (at least, I think that's what happened, no idea what freaked out customs about any of this stuff, but oh well).

Anyway, pictures. First, my Gameboy Light!

Sadly, it's not a real Famicom limited edition one, but I reshelled it because the GB Light I got was pretty beat up, screen aside. I think it looks lovely, and I'm really impressed by the screen quality - it's basically a backlit Gameboy Pocket, but without being biverted or whatever (and with AA batteries, you can comfortably use an Everdrive with it without the thing shutting off or dying instantly lol).

Next up (because I can't be arsed to put these in separate threads, they're mostly handheld related anyway) - my Super Famicom!

Boxed copies of the Final Fantasy SNES games are super, super cheap in Japan. Also, whoever played this version of FF6 in Japan played the absolute hell out of it, they have multiple save files at over 80 hours in the last dungeon haha. I also have a Super NES to Super Famicom adapter, not pictured, that I got off Etsy, that works perfectly fine. I also got an English copy of Final Fantasy VI off Etsy too, with an English translation by TT's own Sky Rendar, coincidentally haha. Super Gameboy 2 works great with my Everdrive and is the primary reason I got this thing, though I will definitely be getting an Everdrive for it, eventually.

To round things off, three special edition original DSs and a Gameboy Micro:

All work fine, just need to be cleaned. I'll probably get a new shell for the Gameboy Micro, as I find that one a little dull tbh.

That's a hell of a haul. The Famitsu Game Boy Light is a very beautiful console, possibly the best special edition of anything.

Agreed. I'm not willing to pay what real versions are worth, but they are gorgeous.

I kinda wish the Super Gameboy 2 came in a different color, or if there were reshells available. It's a bit gaudy sticking out of the Super Famicom lol

I've been using the heck out of that Super Game Boy 2 lately, having just played through the entirety of Pokemon Blue on it and my Gameboy Light (for whatever reason lol).

I'm really impressed with the Super Game Boy in general. It is an unforgivable crime that Nintendo never implemented Super Game Boy functionality in any Game Boy Color/Advance/DS/Virtual Console/etc, because all the backgrounds and little touches are fantastic. Dragon Warrior I&II for GBC, while the game itself is monochrome on SGB, has lovely little borders that reflect where you are in the game - town, battle, overworld, etc. Look at these!

Unless I'm mistaken, you can only see these while playing a Super Game Boy. Game Boy Player doesn't even do SGB stuff, dangit! I know this because I've played the hell out of Donkey Kong 94 on Game Boy Player, and Pauline's cries of "Help!" aren't actually voiced like they are on SGB, nor do you get the delightful arcade border.

Also, when you connect an actual Game Boy to the Super Game Boy 2's link port, a little green light comes on in the SGB2, which I thought was a nice little touch.

Yeah, that was one of the really disappointing things to me when I got the GB Player. Those backgrounds are there and they're super awesome.

Kazin, are you aware of all the neat stuff that you can do with Space Invaders and a Super Game Boy?

ArugulaZ

All the neat things? I just know about the one neat thing, being able to play a Super NES version of Space Invaders using the Game Boy cartridge. Which is kind of odd, because Taito also released Space Invaders on a Super NES cartridge.

Yeah, one of the first things I did when I got my SGB2 was to try Space Invaders, since I'd seen Parish's video about it. It's pretty neat! Weird little thing, but neat.

Lee from Pug Hoof Gaming did a great series on the SGB a few years back. Goes really into the different cool things going on there.

I kinda want a Hori Super Game Boy pad to play glitchy Game Boy games at higher speed... tempting lol

Looks like I'll be modding yet another GBA in 2022 when I get some cash together, because there's a cheap HDMI out kit available now:
