I had no reason to ever play the series until III, which I did Because a Woman Exists, and in that context it was a totally adequate light exploration, light combo fiend, light modern action adventure filtered through the osmosis of Souls trappings kind of game. Master of none, of modest scale and probably developmental circumstances, and competently forgettable; the kind of rental-in-spirit project that doesn't happen too often these days.

I really enjoyed Darksiders III. I know it didn't get a ton of critical acclaim, but I loved it for its sort of PS2-ish action-adventure vibes. It's the sort of AA/A-level project that was more common in that era.

I liked the first one a lot because it's Gratuitously Edgy Ocarina of Time (and that's hilarious), but none of the sequels' mashups sounded appealing enough for me to take a chance on.

Darksiders 2 is the one I played, and it's astoundingly fun. It's very much a melange of other games: soul reaver with loot drops is accurate, but add Prince of Persia wall running and terrain navigation, surprisingly deep but not intimidating DmC character action style combat with different weapons that play differently, and the aforementioned Zelda dungeons.

When I played it, I accidentally beat an optional boss a dozen levels before I should have with some practice and Capcom-boss style pattern recognition and later found out I was underleveled. I think that's a pretty solid indicator that the game's got legs.

The first one was an incredibly good Zelda clone, even if it was just as incredibly stupid 90s Image comic book bullshit otherwise.

IIRC, Darksiders 2 suffered from some padding issues in my opinion. I enjoyed them both though. I have 3 but have yet to try it.

Looks like Spelunky and it’s even Spelunkier (not to be confused with Spelunker) sequel are coming out at the end of the month.

That’s quite a lot of Splunk!

Nintendo quietly dropped a WarioWare demo last night. Basically one level with no boss micro game, but it gives you an idea of how the different characters can make micro games play differently.

Apparently a FCC filing for what people are suspecting is a Switch controller of some kind is going non-confidential Friday, so we may be seeing… something peripheral related… at the Direct.

Hoping for something delightfully absurd like a Game Boy-shaped VMU-ish thing, for playing GB games you get from Nesflix.

Oh boy I can't wait for them to confirm NSO Game Boy and N64 and show us Metroid Prime 4 footage and announce Oracle of Ages/Seasons remakes and bring Mother 3 to the US and reveal another Smash DLC pass and remake Thousand Year Door and bring back Alphadream for the Mario & Luigi series and show off a new F-Zero!

And I will riot if none of these things happen!
