did i do all of that?

I wonder how much more that'll cost than the regular Switch? I doubt I'll get one, though I like the white of both the dock and the joycons...

Hopefully the lack of an upgraded chip means scalpers will be disinterested too for anyone who just needed to get a new unit for whatever reason.

Considering things like new 3DS never really took advantage of the new chipset fully, it would probably be best to wait for Switch 2 for that, and that seems still a ways away at this point.

Wow. I expected nothing and it's even less than I was thinking. I'm glad that the user base isn't split and there's no *NEW* Nintendo Switch thing.

My Switch is kind of getting old and has to be smushed back together sometimes to work with the dock, so I was thinking of a replacement, but now I'm thinking I'll just try to get Nintendo to fix it if it gets worse. Will save that money towards a TB SD card or something.

OLED is a great difference, though. If you use your Switch mostly in handheld mode, a larger OLED screen is going to look so much nicer.

Nice enough to upgrade? Dunno, depends. Will we get a Metroid themed one?

I don't care much about the screen, but a stand that isn't a toothpick that makes me think I'll remove the SD card, and wired internet? Good stuff. Again, not enough to upgrade, but if we ever replace our launch model I'm pleased with those.

I'm laughing.

I am laughing.

"Here's your new Switch, it basically just has a shiny new screen and a different mold."

Beautiful.

I mostly play in handheld mode and a bigger OLED would be nice. But, I never complained about the Swich screen and I’d rather spend money on games. If I ever needed a replacement I’d go for the OLED.

The contrast between the person (clearly not) playing Metroid Dread in that trailer and the gameplay gootage itself is pretty funny ngl

Seeing this, I have no plans to upgrade my switch, but it makes me happy if I were to ever have to. I definitely like the bigger screen and better speakers, as I play mine roughly 80% in handheld mode, and I love the new, much better kickstand. I've only used that feature like...twice on my switch, but some of blame lies in just how weak and half-assed the current stand is. I might actually be inspired to use "tent" mode more if there was a more reliable stand.

I got a Zelda carrying case with a built-in stand function I use when I wanna play undocked but not handheld.

A nothingburger. I want to remain a Nintendo customer but they keep making decisions that are not really in-line with my own desires. Fuck portability. I don't give a shit about it whatsoever. What I do care about is getting the best display possible while docked since my Switch very rarely leaves the dock. It's becoming a sigh-worthy experience to go from the PS5 and Series X to the Switch, just as it was to go from a PS4 to the Switch. Great games hampered by tech that was already old in 2017.

That OLED is going to look mighty nice, and I know this because my 65-inch brand new TV is OLED as well. It's a shame Nintendo essentially built couch gaming and now they seem to just not really give a shit about it. Oh, they show in PR that they do. They say they do. But not really.

But the biggest oof here is the price. They should simply phase out the original hardware and put this out there (which I guess will happen over time.) I'm still holding out for a Switch Mark 2, and Nintendo is just playing their cards close, but I'm not holding my breath. And it certainly ain't coming this year.

I guess the wired ethernet port is nice

Anyway, where's the pre-order page? Those SNES Online games are going to look stunning.

Can you imagine the reaction from The Gamers if Nintendo did actually announce this during E3? It would've been A Disaster For Sure!!!

I'm just thrilled I'm not tempted to upgrade like I was with DS Lite/DSi/New 3DS/New 3DS XL, and so on. This is great for people who don't already own a Switch! But I've already got one and I'm good with it. I'd rather they do something like this rather than an incremental upgrade and then expect me to buy the newest full-on upgrade two years after that.

I just realized that this update is functionally equivalent to the Game Boy Light, which imo makes it even more hilarious.

I've heard speculation that the current shortages and and supply-chain issues in the semiconductor industry are the reasons this isn't a more substantial upgrade, though tbqh this is fine by me (probably not getting it tho).

Shame about the price. Thought they would have lowered the price for the based model, but no.

It should be okay, yes. Have you ever played an original Vita? They also have OLEDs. It's very similar to a smartphone.
I have a vita: never tried to take it outside. I should give it a shot. I might actually buy one of these if it means I can play on my porch.

I think I'll get one, it comes out on my birthday, and let the boy have the old one to gum up with his jam hands and he can drop it on the ground as much as he wants

But also: you've already got a Series X and PS5, so what you're mostly missing out on would be first-party Nintendo games that run in 4k or whatever. But Nintendo has never really tried to make games with high-end specs like that in mind.

Nintendo almost never lowers base prices... Unless it's Other M.

But even 1080P is lovely if there's some horsepower behind the thing, such as ability to produce higher and steadier framerates. There's no good reason why modern Switch games should chug, and some of them do, or why I'm getting regular pop-in and artifacting in something as new as Mario Golf. "Doing more with less" has long been Nintendo's mantra but you eventually run into walls. Nintendo either doesn't see those walls or doesn't care about them. (Or, as always, they're waiting for a cheaper sledgehammer.) Competing with Sony or Microsoft isn't something Nintendo should do nor do I want them to. I'd just like the confidence to buy a Nintendo game and know I won't be shaking my head in disappointment because, hey gotta be honest, this kinda performs like ass.

What Nintendo provides and what I want from them are two increasingly different things. I'm thinking about bowing out after Metroid Dread and just crossing my fingers that whatever finally succeeds the Switch will play Switch games as well. By then, there will be a ton of Switch stuff to dig into and (presumably) something with a little more oomph under the hood. I'm fairly ambivalent about Breath of the Wild 2, no big shakes if I don't get to play it when it comes out, so it seems like a good time to take a breath (of the wild) and just wait it out until Nintendo gives me some actual new hardware. Of course, Nintendo might not care about making those older games work better with whatever the new hardware ends up being, so a lot of finger-crossing happening over here. Crossed fingers all the way down.

If I ever see one cheap I might get the OLED version since I play mine a bit more in bed than on the telly lately. But the original Switch screen is still fantastic so I’m not hurting for anything new.

But if I did locate a cheap OLED unit I could also take my launch Switch offline and hack the shit out of it without worries. (Ty nVidia for your hardware level bug.)

In terms of an actual generational successor to Switch, Nintendo might have initially planned it for this year or next but the ongoing chip crises made them go “lol no” for now.
