Came into work this morning to find a Slack message from my team member who's really good at getting hard-to-find items like this telling me he'll have a Switch for me on Monday, if I didn't already have one. So I guess I'm gonna be joining you all next week! I hope it doesn't get a staple through the screen.

Picked mine up from my local Best Buy this morning. After a few Mario Kart races, I've spent the rest of my time with this so far playing Link's Awakening with a rock-solid butter-smooth framerate; it's a noticeably better feeling experience than on the original. I think I'm going to get a lot of mileage just replaying old Switch games on this thing this year.

Spent a few hours today playing with the Switch 2. Docked only, as is my wont. Some random scattered thoughts:

-Mario Kart World continues to be a great deal of fun and I'm more engaged with it than I thought I would be. I managed to roll credits tonight, which doesn't mean a whole lot with this kind of game. Rainbow Road is amazing in that particular Nintendo way.

-There's only three GameCube games available at the moment: Wind Waker, F-Zero, and Soul Calibur 2. I'm not sure if the soul still burns nor did I check in on Captain Falcon but HOLY BALLS AND ALSO SHAFT does Wind Waker look phenomenal. I know it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the Wii U version but I'm not sure we need that one now. (I did have to customize the controls for the C-stick; moving the stick left send the camera right, and vice versa. Feels strange in the modern age.) The CRT filter is...fine, I guess? Never really been my kind of thing.

How's the Gamecube stuff? Does it have save states and the like?

They do indeed have save states and customizable controls.

-Link's Awakening (and assume Echoes of Wisdom) are buttery smooth now.

-Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks very much the same as it did on Switch 1. I didn't expect much considering Nintendo has been mum on any kind of upgrades to XBC2 but I was still a little disappointed that even the raw horsepower of the Switch 2 doesn't seem to do much for XBC2, if anything.

-I was suprised to find games in the Game Boy, NES, SNES, and Game Boy Advance apps look nicer. I didn't deep dive any of them but I did play a bit of Journey to Silius (NES) and Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA) and they were noticeably crisper than when I was playing them a few days ago on Switch 1. Not sure if that's also a raw horsepower thing or maybe just the HDR.

-From the Tears of the Kingdom main menu, I was able to download the Switch 2 version. Took about five minutes to install the upgrade pack. As expected, it looks better and runs at a solid 60. I'm not the biggest fan of these open world Zeldas but Tears looks so good I'm considering another jaunt. I did not try out Breath of the Wild yet. I did mess around with the settings in the Switch 2, switching (heh) from 4K to 1080P, which allows my TV to go up to 120 fps. I didn't notice much of a difference in Tears when doing that outside of a noticeable decline in visual fidelity; changed it back to 4K pretty quickly. Could be that Tears is locked at 60 and I need a different game to test. I'm playing on a 65" television but I suspect these types of things are probably not as noticeable in handheld mode.

-The eShop navigation isn't as snappy as PS Store on a PS5 but it is quite a bit snappier than the Switch 1 version. Things actually load without much of a wait. Go figure.

-Super Mario Odyssey seems a little more bright, a little more crisp but I haven't played it since launch so my memory might be failing me there. I seem to recall the tell-tale Switch 1 "blur" where everything had a kind of soft smudge to it. That's gone completely, as well as the weird issue with background objects moving at a lower FPS than things in the foreground.

Overall, I'm fairly impressed with the console and, again, I only play docked. That it could do all of this in handheld...well, I kinda understand why it commands the price it does. I do wish Nintendo had also launched DK Bananza or even Metroid Prime 4 alongside the machine to give us a little more variety but I understand they'll be looking to pad their release schedules for the rest of the year.

Edit: Oh, yeah. One more thing. Apparently, at some point, I bought Pokemon Scarlet. I have no recollection of doing this but it's on my shelf, still wrapped in the cellophane. I saw some videos complaining about abysmal performance on Switch 1 so I guess I'm glad I waited? I mean, I waited without me realizing I was waiting. In any case, something else to check out.

I'm just getting around to setting up my Switch2 this evening. I don't have a lot to say about it so far, beyond stuff a lot of people have already said here. The two big things though that I don't think I've seen anyone say yet are:

1) The pro controller for the S2 is kinda bad. The sticks feel really smooth and most of the buttons feel good. But this thing is *small*. It's probably the smallest controller since the DualShock. And it feels even smaller. It doesn't look smaller, but it *feels* that way. Specifically, the two sides of the controller where the face buttons sit are very close together. To the point where my index fingers wrapping around the top of the controller can easily touch each other while holding the controller normally/neutrally. It makes the whole thing feel small. Gamers with smaller hands will probably rejoice, but me and my gorilla-mitts are not happy. It's so bad I'm considering returning it. It's way too expensive for having subpar ergonomics and for a controller that will 100% get stick drift eventually. (We know this will be the case.)

2) The joycon grip that comes with the console is a fucking atrocity. Just like with the Switch1, the pack-in grip does not come with a usb port. If you want to use the joycons like a traditional controller, and/or charge them while playing a game, you're SoL. If you want a grip with a charge port on it, you have to pay an additional $40 on top for the privelage. They did that shit with the S1 and it pissed me off. That they're doing it yet again, tells me how much hubris and greed are informing Nintendo's decisions here. Nintendo could have easily included the circuitry for the pack-in grip for just a few cents and instead they saw it as an opportunity to extract even more wealth at an obscene rate. It's actually infuriating.

Honestly, I haven't played my Switch1 very much over the last year or two, specifically because of how bad the performance is on a lot of games, and I was waiting for an eventual Switch2 to pick those games back up. It's probably what I'm most excited about, much more than any of the new games that are out or on the horizon. The Switch1 struggles *really* hard on a lot of stuff. To the point where many games I have are straight up unplayable.

Wait the Gamecube app only came out with three games, one of which is an ancient 3D fighting game? Lol Wind Waker's good, at least, and F-Zero GX is rad, but wow. Put Mario Sunshine on there at least.

God, if they put Melee on there, and the online play works well, people are going to go nuts.

Soulcalibur II was then and now an extremely critically acclaimed fighting game and remains competitively an evergreen that rivals Melee's station to this day, and in contention for best of its series in wide estimation. The GameCube version is in all likelihood the most popular version in content terms because of the Link guest appearance alone, too.

I was not aware anybody cared about the older entries of the Soul Calibur games (besides the first one on Dreamcast, which I was under the impression was the gold standard for the series), but then I was never a big 3D fighting game fan so I suppose I'm showing my ignorance there.

SC2 is one of the greatest fighting games ever made! It's SC1 but better in every way, plus you get to play as Link!

Also, I watched someone try to play it on a stream a little bit ago. The input lag for playing it online is essentially unplayable. Waayyyyy too much input lag. Dude was showing the stream him hitting a button, and then like, half a second later, the input would fire off. You really can't play a fighting game, or really any competitive game that way.

Plus it’s really the version that would likely show up ported to Nintendo hardware

Right, the first two Soulcalibur games have an amazing rep to this day. Many feel the series really dropped off after those two. I played the mess out of both of them, and of course it was the GC version of SC2, why wouldn't it be? 😅

Half a dozen more Gamecube games have been announced, but with no time frame. The next one will be Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

Has anyone tried to sync the NSO Gamecube controller to anything else yet? If that works, I'm slightly interested in getting one for my actual Gamecube with an internal bluetooth mod...

They were just playing SC2 at EVO less than a month ago! Not 6, or 5, or 1, but 2!
I hope 6 is at least decent. I bought it on sale a while back, but haven't played it yet.

Enjoyed playing II with Nadia earlier. I think it might be growing on her, thanks in part to Link. Trying to figure out the controls is kind of a mess, though. Not only do they not tell you which commands correspond to which buttons in the controls menu, but I'm thinking they changed how they're mapped. Like I think it said one button was Guard, but it was mapped to another.

I have SCII for the GameCube, but it has been a while, and this didn't help.

Outside of SCII, the big trick for me was getting Animal Crossing moved over, which was a tale of three consoles. Plus a dedicated app just for this purpose.

Nintendo takes some of this shit way too seriously. You'd think real world money or honor were on the line if someone just used the cloud to restore their access to their island.

I'm unsure if the ergonomics of handheld mode are any better for me. Not huge on the Joy-Con grip. Using the S1 Pro for now.

Mario Kart World is fun, but I have grievances. Mostly minor stuff, but they add up. Should be a fun stream later, though.

What the game calls A, which stands for Horizontal, is mapped to the A button.

B, which stands for Vertical, is mapped to the Y button.

K, which stands for Kick, is mapped to the X button.

I don't think they gave a letter to the guard button, but that's mapped to B.

So far my biggest complaint - maybe my only complaint - with Mario Kart World is that the charge jump boost/wall ride manuever they added is done with the R button, same button you use to power slide. Often enough to be annoying, I'll want to drift but end up in a forward boost animation or vice versa.

I've been playing a lot of Wind Waker in the GCN app and a lot of Super Mario Odyssey. Both look like a dream on Switch 2.

Curious what the drawbacks are for you. I haven't had time to do anything but play a single race.

Well, let's see... some of these, I've found out there's other stuff to them, but...

One thing is that I was irked that Donkey Kong is unlockable, instead of available at the start. After all that hype! Thankfully, he's available after clearing the first cup at any CC, so really minor, that.

More annoying is that he and Pauline have only one outfit, each. The damn Koopa Troopa has more than double their number of outfits combined! Even the $%#@ing babies get more outfits than they do!

That just bothers me as a fan of DK and Pauline, and on principle.

I think I've already gone on a tear about how while I do like having more regular creatures as racers, it's annoying how many previous racers and other more worthy characters aren't here.

I wish there were more control options. Trying to accelerate with the A button after using the R trigger for every other racing game in existence just feels kinda unnatural to me. I tried auto-accelerate, but somehow that was even worse. I got kinda used to it by the stream, but it still feels suboptimal to me.

One thing that bugged me less after today was doing tricks. Game does them automatically for you, which kinda takes the fun out of it.

Or so I thought. Apparently, some auto-driving thing (separate from auto-acceleration) was on by default, and apparently it does tricks for you, too. Nadia found that and turned it off after I last played and posted the above, so that's a non-issue (except maybe having it on by default).

And for an "open world" game, I've apparently gone out of bounds more often than I would have expected.

Again, it's a bunch of minor stuff, some of it's since been negated. I'm largely enjoying it, but some of those were sticking in my mind.

ICYMI, here's our stream from earlier. It was pretty enjoyable, though I was getting a little frustrated when I kept getting the meals and not getting any new costumes for Rosalina (got them all eventually).

Mario Kart has always had accelerate mapped to A, which I appreciate as a shoulder button hating weirdo lol. My index fingers are for pointing, not playing video games gdi (I'm kidding, mostly)

Very strange that you have to unlock DK, though.

I finally caught #1 in Knockout Tour, so I think I got what I want from Mario Kart World. The MK series has always been something I pour a few hours into and then shelve, only taking it out on rare occasions, and World doesn't seem like it'll be any kind of exception to the rule. It's fun but 80 dollars fun? 🤷‍♂️

Having a blast with Super Mario Odyssey, though. Forgot how damn good it is. Might even finish it this time.

Mario Kart is, to me, first and foremost a party game. You play it every now and then when you and your friends want to play games together. Playtime with friends IRL as adults with expensive tastes is back account draining. $80 for something we'll play sparsely but routinely for like the next half decade is extremely money's worth. But that's just my personal calculus. That said, asking the entire friend group to pay $500 each so we can all play the same game we're already playing with minor changes probably is not money's worth for the group at large. 🤷‍♂️

I literally said I was still having fun in the post that prompted your question. =\
Sorry, you said you had a lot of small things that added up to be significantly annoying to you, and I'm just trying to empathize with and respect your situation and pov.

Ah. Well, I appreciate the thought. ^^

But I just kinda meant that collectively, it's annoying, but it's still a good enough game that I'm enjoying it despite all of that. Difference between great and fantastic, I guess?

Can't quite get the hang of the powered jumps or whatever they're called, though.

Kind of glad there isn't much Switch 2 exclusive stuff I'm interested in right now, since in typical Nintendo fashion the storage situation for this device seems fucked right out the gate and the messaging about sdcards is really bad. 512 GB MicroSD Express cards from Wal-Mart are being actively scalped online. Lexar said they will have a replenished stock of the 1TB MicroSD Express in July, which is the only card I'm interested in getting with these beefy game sizes.
