BotW and TotK Switch 2 Edition upgrades are free for NSO Expansion Pack subs, and it's confirmed that you can still play the regular versions of upgraded titles on S1

Well, that's nice at least. I do pay for that already.

I'm not the biggest fan of Breath of the Kingdom (to say the least) but the increased framerate was noticeable in the trailers and at least Tears looked to be improved by quite a bit. Load times are also nice. Not as fast as NVMe but noticeably improved. HDR really making some of the colors pop.

I never play in handheld mode, only docked, so I'm interested in seeing them in what I assume is a locked 60fps and maybe something above 1080p. Yeah, might be worth a revisit. (I don't think they're bad games by any means, just very overrated.)

Big thanks to Nintendo for not putting an OLED in this and giving me every incentive in the world to just wait for an upgrade/price reduction. Unless they surprise drop Startropics 3 on this thing, I'm content with the Switch and Steamdeck for now.

Fyi, the Nintendo site has pre-order registration up. Priority for the waitlist requires an existing Nintendo Account with at least 50 game hours and 12 months of NSO under your belt.

- 1080p handheld, 4k docked
Bingo. Very impressed there will be 120 fps modes too.
I really don't put a lot of stock into this. These kinds of descriptions/announcements are about what signal the hardware is capable of outputting. It doesn't necessarily have to do with what resolution and framerates games will actually have. The PS3/360 were capable of 1080p signal outputs. But almost none of the games of those systems ran at even half that resolution, and instead used upscalers to output a 1080p signal to your TV. Such things are made even less important these days now that variable framerates and resolutions are the norm for a lot of games. To me, this is just their way of saying their system is running off of HDMI 2.1. Which is great! But that's not going to mean anything to most people, and instead they can get nerds excited by saying buzzwords they do understand, but not understand fully. That, and I'm willing to bet the Switch 2 will be using DLSS to achieve higher framerates/resolutions. And I'm personally not a big fan of fake-frames. If they get a high enough version of DLSS it'll look nice depending on developer usage. But for a lot of games that depend on pixel-perfect reaction times, the input delay DLSS creates will make playing on a Switch 2 neigh untenable. Games like twitch shooters, rhythm games, fighting games, or certain character-action games are gonna be very frustrating to play on Switch 2 if there isn't user settings to toggle DLSS off.

Considering how few companies prioritize small file sizes (looking at you, Square Enix and your FF7 Remake announcement), that 256 GB will probably get eaten up fast (though, yes, it will depend on the games you typically play on it, which may be small).
FF7R's large filesize is largely due to the game's audio. There's a lot of uncompressed audio in the game, from all the music, sfx, and dialog. But it's made even thicker IIRC because you're not just getting one language track onboard, but like a half-dozen different languages as well. And then there's the fact that for nearly every FMV cutscene in the game, there are two versions of each, one with the lip-flaps synched to JP voices, and the other to ENG. And as much as they could have made a lot of those things optional installs/downloads, I'm just grateful we have the options to begin with. Also this game sounds incredible. They can eat up every last bit of storage for the next one if they keep the fidelity and quality of the game's audio this peak as far as I'm concerned

Best Buy pre-orders go live on April 9th. (No word yet on the time they go live.) Midnight launch in select stores.

Someone posted this on Bluesky in response to the game prices. I have no opinion in either direction, really, but I thought it was funny.

Welp, after that tariff announcement I’m not buying new electronics any time soon. Not unless I can make this move to Canada work.

But what really bums me out is that there was no mention of a new 3D Mario game. And with the launch of DK Bananza in July, they probably won't want to release a Mario game in the same genre for a good while afterwards. So are we looking at a 2026 launch, then? I enjoy Mario Kart as much as the next person, and the open-world iteration might be a fun twist on the formula, but Mario was the main thing I was hoping for from this Direct. And I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my expensive Switch 2 once I've had my fill of racing around the Mushroom Kingdom...
This has been bumming me out too. As someone who doesn't care about Mario Kart, there just...isn't really much for me at launch. New Donkey Kong looks fun, obviously I want Metroid Prime 4, and as long as the Duskbloods isn't another Nightreign I want to play that too, but none of them will be available in June. I guess there are a handful of OG Switch games I'd still like to play, but if I preorder to get one at launch (and I probably will, because who knows if they'll have supply issues) I feel like I'm just not gonna do anything with the system for a month.

I don't know how easy / hard it is to revise an MSRP.

$80 for games (unless Mario Kart World is an exception) + tariffs cooling the economy may equal a Nintendo stumble in Switch era.

TBD. I'm not rooting against Nintendo, I just think this is bad timing to up the price of games.

No StreetPass :(

I don't expect to ever use the mouse or the chat button.

Biggest draws for me are Donkey Kong and Bravely Default.

Did the graphics of From Soft games look a little weird to you? It reminded me of the earliest first PS4 games where everything looked strangely wet and shiny.

I looked at some more stuff and I am looking forward to eventually playing the new Donkey Kong, Mario Kart and the Kirby games. Not a bad lineup, but certainly no Breath of the Wild. I’ve become somewhat tepid on FromSoft after Elden Ring, but it’s nice to see Nintendo spend some of their dragon hoard of money on getting exclusive games.

Still a terrible look on $80 games. It’s not like food and other goods haven’t stayed at Covid-era price gouging, so seeing Nintendo be the one to raise even some game prices beyond even $70 sucks ass. Nintendo is charging $80 before Activision, Take Two or Ubisoft! Holy Shit!

imo Donkey Kong Bananza Bros has me much more excited than a new 3D Mario

they even got somebody to say "oooh banana," so it's clear they understand the one good thing about DK64

There's supposed to be a free upgrade patch for Super Mario Odyssey, which I never finished, and I have Brothership just sitting on my desk still in the cellophane. Mario Kart will do just fine until DK, and hopefully we'll have a Metroid Prime 4 release date by then. I'm content to visit and maybe revisit some Switch 1 games while I wait for more Switch 2 stuff. (Speaking of Switch 1 games, that OnStar-for-Zelda app is wild.)

I can't imagine ever using GameChat or the mouse functionality, and the optional camera was an immediate non-starter. You gimme that Pro controller, though.

I'm not in love with the price of the system by any means; portability means nothing to me, I don't want to eat the cost of a screen I don't need, just give me relatively cheap box I can hook up to my TV. Buuuuuut it just so happens my birthday is June 2, so I guess I know what I'm getting this year.

Here, it's $629.99 for the base model, $699.99 for the bundle with Mario Kart World.

And they aren't telling us how much the games are yet.

I've seen people reacting to all sorts of various numbers, though, all north of $100, with the highest being $130.

I don't know if Nintendo was just too cheap to have the boat make a second stop in Vancouver so Nintendo of Canada could handle it or what, but... oof.

Worst part is, waiting really isn't an option for us.

THAT SAID, I found the Switch 2 to be... fine? I guess? Nothing about the console itself really blew me away, and hard to believe they're letting Sony get a W over them with that intro game.

Mario Kart World has my eye, but I have some issues with it. Mostly pet peeves. Might enjoy it more when I actually play it.

Donkey Kong Bananza was the savior for me, though. That's the DK game I've been dreaming of for years, if not longer.

Figures this would be a real monkey's paw wish situation with the rest, though.

I missed seeing this sequel to Survival Kids from like 20 years ago completely yesterday:

It is wild to see a Survival Kids sequel after all these years. A shame I hate the graphical style so much.

"The game where the Nintendo Direct video broke and we had to stare at it for a very long time". Yeah, it looks like a mobile game from the graphics style.

I like Mario Kart but if I was living alone I'd be holding off, because the game I'm most excited for is Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment and that's "winter".

But my spouse is interested in a lot of the Switch 2 titles so we'll probably get a launch one to share. If they're really hard to get I dunno if we'll put a lot of effort into trying though.

Games pricing has never made any sense to me. A visit to the computer store to buy a PC game was a big deal and I don't even remember pricing, SNES games were $80 and I basically got two games a year, one on my birthday and one at Christmas. I'd trade with friends, then I had a car and the ability to buy used games, then Steam came around and now we use the digital gift cards from our bottle recycling or our commute points as video game funds so I usually wait until we have points or it's on sale, or I find it used or again, Christmas and birthday.

I am really glad it has a headphone jack. I was going to be pissed at having to use bluetooth on planes and such. The chat and video stuff isn't for me and I expect Nintendo to be completely incapable of handing poor behaviour.

TotK was $70USD/$90CAD, so I expect they'll stick with those numbers. Not quite sure what that means for any $80USD games, though. Hard to imagine they would break the $99CAD barrier, but who knows.

Nintendo's solution for bad behaviour is the same as always: friend codes!

Also:

- Buying a "Switch 2 Edition" physical game gives you a Switch 1 cartridge with a built-in key for the Switch 2 Edition upgrade

- Switch 2 Edition digital games will just act like the base game when the virtual card is moved to a Switch 1

EDIT: LOL WHO KNOWS

- Some games are confirmed for totally free upgrades when played on Switch 2, including Odyssey, Link's Awakening, and Echoes of Wisdom. Probably graphical bumps above what the normal backwards compatibility will provide.

Yeah, I noticed this too. I loved the Survival Kids games, and this visually just looks so bleh. It's a shame too because there really isn't a lot of games that even play like this at all. Or if they do, they involve cumbersome/annoying game mechanics like having to micromanage a bunch of monkeys and it becomes a completely different game.

It also seems to be lively co-op which isn't really what I want from Survival Kids, I want something like the original game, sort of stressful survival, not... Happy multiplayer crafting like that appears to be.

The new Survival Kids looks like Konami briefly remembered they had the property and let someone slap the name on a mobile game

For Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom it has to be framerate improvements. The FPS issues were quite noticeable at launch. (I heard they "fixed" Echoes after launch but I had finished it by that point.)

Watched some of the Treehouse today. My thoughts:

-Mario Kart World looks more fun than what I thought it would. I wonder if there will be "secrets" to find in the world, kinda like the open parts of Diddy Kong Racing. (I'd sell a full quarter of my soul for a Diddy Kong Racing remake. Microsoft owns most of the racers but MS is buddy-buddy with everyone now, so...)

-Metroid Prime 4 in 4K/60 was a damn treat.

-Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom also looking quite nice. Breath has mild improvements, and maybe that's expected for a game that started as a Wii U title. I had to raise an eyebrow though at how much better Tears looks. More noticable improvements there, especially FPS and shadows.

From what I could tell, each course has a bunch of ? icons over it when you select it, and they seem to correspond to racer outfits which are found by collecting food items (for some reason). I saw them drive around a bit in Free Roam mode and they found a costume for Mario behind a diner, so I think there will be at least those to search for.

I hope they bring back the bike suits.

I mean, you'd think after being featured prominently in the movie and Peach even getting a figure based on it that there would be no question, but I haven't seen any signs yet.

(Haven't watched Treehouse yet, though, to be fair.)

Having seen more of DK Bananza on stream today, I'm a lot more excited about it. Turns out "DK as the Incredible Hulk" is a pretty compelling concept!
