Woof, that is a big ask. I'll wait for more details but at the very least it's not something I'll be jumping on right away.

My girlfriend is getting it because Ocarina on Switch has been #1 on her wishlist forever, but I'll just use hers, I think... Don't need it for myself right now. Although it's a yearly price, so it's really like $4.20 a month, which really isn't so bad? Compared to other similar services and subscriptions? I think?

Yeah, considering I'm not interested in diving back into Animal Crossing that's a lot to ask for on top of the regular membership.

Wait, is it like $50 annually plus the normal sub, or does the NSO+ price include the standard baked into it?

Becksworth

Aging Hipster Dragon Dad
Both combined. The individual price for the expansion varies because it's pro rated based on how much of your regular subscription is left.

Ha ha ha ha fuck that.

Seriously, 80$ USD for a family plan? Double the fucking price just for N64 and Genesis games if you don’t play Animal Crossing?

Yeah, I have a family membership for my IRL friends. If they want to pool in for the upgrade they are more than welcome.

Kazin

did i do all of that?

I bought a bluetooth N64 controller, so I'm happy, as that's all I wanted. I have an online membership already, and I barely use it. But as soon as somebody makes a bluetooth adapter for the original N64, I'm good to go...!

I'm curious to see if the stick is made of better material than the wear-prone plastic of the original.

Animal Crossing today, your franchise of choice tomorrow.

A $25 expansion on top of a $20 memership plus N64 games for $50 is more palatable, but then they'd have to keep coming up with DLC for the franchise of my choice every year to keep me hooked.

Yeah if at least first party games from now on had “free” expansion pass dlc like Zelda or Pokemon etc. that would be nice. But I’m not holding my breath.

I have no idea if you permanently have that DLC or if it goes away when the membership does. Either way, it’s a spicy, spicy ask for not a lot of added value.

Yeah, I really want to know this and whether free DLC will also apply to other first party games before I would even consider going for it. There are some scummy aspects of even the current cheap membership plan, like how if you bought one of those $100 voucher for two games, you can only use them while your membership is active. Only being able to buy them while your membership is active is fair. It's a membership perk. Only being able to redeem them while your membership is active after after you've already spent $100 or whatever while previously a member feels a bit predatory. (I know the voucher program ended in the US, but it's an ongoing issue because it still exists for Japanese accounts...)

My inclination would be that this DLC also is contingent on membership being active until I hear otherwise, and in that case I would never even consider this new tier to be a decent value for the price.

I know I'm in a tiny minority that is hugely represented by this forum's demographics and also that apparently the economics were bad for many 3rd parties, but I miss VC. Just let me buy the single old game I want to play on the console for $5-$10 a pop, please...

Unfortunately companies really really love the more consistent revenue stream of subscription services, so things only continue to get worse for us a-la-carte-preferrers. (Meanwhile if I have to sign up for one more streaming service I may scream.)

Really fighting with myself over this one.

Not the N64 controller though, I bought the hell out of that

I am definitely tempted to get an N64 controller because using a c-stick as an alternative for buttons is a bad time.

I don't know, but the SNES one works with my MiSTer wired with no difficulty so I suspect the N64 will work with PCs one way or another

Good news! I have the answer!

The bad news is that it's bad news: You do not keep the DLC.

If your membership lapses or whatever, you still get to keep whatever you made out of the DLC, but you'll no longer be able to visit those islands and such unless you either re-up or buy the DLC outright.

It seems likely that the licensing cost of third party titles is what drives the high subscription price for NSO+.

It's definitely not as good a deal as the basic package, at more than double the price for less than double the benefit. I guess they're positioning it as the premium offering. Might end up going for it anyway depending on what other things they bundle with it, though.

I'd be a lot less let leery about this if they included some existing DLC in the subscription. Throw in the Smash fighters or something.

Yeah I would only do it if the offer was basically all first party DLC for as long as you're subscribed. Maybe it will turn out to be that, but I don't play Animal Crossing so this means nothing to me.

There's stuff I like in the Nintendo 64 and Genesis libraries, but not "Pay $30 more a year" like. Usually, for me, playing Nintendo 64 games is a reminder of just how far 3D gaming has come since the Nintendo 64 era. And while Sega has had games I've enjoyed, I've never really gotten into their 16-bit output as much as I did the SNES.

I mean, I'm just gonna buy that Animal Crossing DLC. That hole was made for me and I don't want its access tied to whether or not I have $50 for another year.

The other thing is that Sega has been putting out huge collections of Genesis games at reasonable prices for years now, so even if you're not familiar with or don't want to bother with alternate methods of playing old games, I don't see that as much of a value add.
