Oh my goodness. I'm going to hold out hope someone picks this up for English release before I do something crazy like buy it from the Japanese eshop.

I wonder what the Bomberman collection costs...

EDIT: Oh, sweet, $20. sold

Yes, the Virtual Boy games will be playable without the paid accessories.

They will just have the two displays on screen just like I thought.

EDIT: Oh ffs that's based on a speculative reddit post lmao. Well, still, I think the rando redditor is right lol
Just FYI, I just watched a YouTuber who got to preview Virtual Boy NSO, and he pulled the Switch 2 out and it continued to display things. It was displaying two images stretched to work better with the lenses, but it looked playable still.

THANK YOU. That is what I thought would happen, but everyone has been freaking out saying you need to drop $30-$100 to play Virtual Boy and I just thought no way that'd be the case. Not for the dang VB. If they don't require you to have the Gamecube NSO or N64 NSO controller to play those (much more popular) consoles, they'd be insane trying to do that with VB.

That is delightful and surprising, given that the modern Bomberman titles on Steam are priced such that only the 5 richest kings of Europe can afford them.

Especially considering you can game share with people who don't even own it. That's cool!

Looks like Console Archives will have different price points.
Ninja Gaiden II (NES) is $7.99 on US eShop
Cool Boarders (PSX) is $11.99 on US eShop

Also, the Goemon Collection is by M2. I have faith someone will pick it up. The Kunio collection getting translated and brought to America has taught me to not give up hope.

Orbitals looks phenomenal, and I'll never play it because I have no interest in co-op. Sadtimes over here in introvert land.

Adventures of Elliott: The Millenium Tales is almost certainly a day-one. I love that HD-2D shit.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is my favorite one of those, so that's neat.

Extremely happy for the revival of Culdcept, via Culdcept Begins which is just a brand new game after a decade of silence, and accompanying it a port of the original Saturn/PS1 game via Culdcept the First, which to my knowledge hasn't been localized before either officially or by fans until now.

They're also de-gacha-ing Another Eden, which looks to be very much my alley.

Also, and this is vital, they're not only bringing back Turok, they're making it a Monster Hunter!

Just a heads up on this - the Switch 2 version, which has Game Share, is $25. I bought the Switch 1 version on accident and had to pay $5 to upgrade it.

Weird Hamster is starting with Ninja Gaiden II instead of I. Might go for it, though.

A little pricier than Virtual Console was, but I guess that's inflation for you. Probably has more features, too, though I forget what they usually bring to the table for their releases.

This sums up my feelings about the Direct today.

Edited to add: maybe I would've been more excited if I didn't own any other consoles, but I do, so there wasn't really anything that caught my eye.
This is a little more doom and gloom than I feel, but I do think that if the Direct had been tagged as "updates on previous announcements and new ports" then I would feel just fine about it.

I am still very excited for Orbitals to come out, should be fun to play this summer.

Lumber thought Pragmata looked interesting and immediately went and downloaded the Steam demo. He's just not going to play a game like that on the Switch if it's on Steam, and I wonder how many other people feel that way.

Overall another alternate title for this Direct is: "Wanna ditch Gamepass? The Switch will finally have a bunch of games that have been on there for years!"

Ah, good to know. Still a pretty good price since you can share the cartridge. I don't think I understood that only the Switch 2 version had Gameshare, bummer. Since Clubhouse Games on the Switch 1 shared a cartridge I figured it would be the same sort of thing for this.

I mean, aren't the Partner Showcases always sort of... whatever? Seems weird to me to have the same expectations for them as a full first-party Direct. This didn't strike me as particularly different from previous Partner Showcases to me (stealth Culdcept reveal notwithstanding): a bunch of reels for games I'm broadly uninterested in, mostly consisting of ports or already-announced titles. Business as usual.

I mean, it was a Partner Showcase. It's where major 3rd Party announcements not exciting enough to compete with 1st party announcements for mindshare, but not small and quirky enough for an Indie Direct go. As a consequence they have consistently been some of the worst Directs.

Honestly, by Partner Showcase standards, that was a damn good one if you ask me. I got a Pragmata and Monster Hunter Stories demo to check out, and Hollow Knight got a free update. I was expecting like the multiple minutes dedicated to that WWE game levels of bad.

Yeah, I thought both were shareable too, but it is Switch 2 exclusive, sadly. Although to be honest I didn't realize there was a price difference at all, and I just grabbed the Switch 1 version since it came up first when I searched for "Bomberman" on the storefront. I feel like they should prioritize Switch 2 stuff if I'm actually on a Switch 2? But I'm no UI designer, what do I know lol

I concur. Partner Showcases have always been the "weakest" in terms of hype of the three Direct types Nintendo does, because it's essentially a place to catch smaller third party announcements and the occasional development partner collab with Nintendo that might not make a splash at a full scale Direct. That Kotaku article annoyed me as well because it is almost purposefully dodging that point to complain about other grievances (otherwise it wouldn't have tossed Metroid Prime 4 into it in such a disparaging way; the game sold well for a Metroid! You didn't like it, point made, move on).

Anyway, I thought this was one of the better Partner Showcases. Orbitals alone pushed it into a higher tier than most of the others! There were a few cool announcements for retro fans, demos for Pragmata and Monster Hunter Stories 3, a new Culdcept, and the free Hollow Knight upgrade is nice! I've walked out of those with next to nothing to be remotely interested in before, haha.

Oh they're definitely always weaker. Still, I really do feel like previous ones have had more interesting/new stuff to share. But I guess the Switch 2 is the first time Nintendo can truly run a lot of the games that are on other things for a while, so I guess it makes sense to highlight those. It just changes the overall vibe from "look at these interesting quirky weirdo games on our platform that you might have missed elsewhere" to "look at these popular games you've already seen in a billion other places" and I vastly prefer the former.

Yeah, as a person who's owned a Switch (2) for less than a year, I was much more into the quirky weirdo games. I don't know one Nintendo Direct from another, outside of when they announce ahead of time that it'll be for first or third party stuff. So a presentation like this, which read to me as "here's a bunch of JRPGs and AAA games that will be better on other systems", was disappointing to me because I'm not really interested in either of those categories. Just a pretty resounding "meh" all around.

I'm still enjoying the console when I play it, but aside from Bananza all the other games I've bought are from the Switch 1 catalog. And that's fine! Part of the reason I wanted to buy it was to finally catch up on the Nintendo games I'd missed from the past few years. Still, it'd be nice to have something new in the announcements to get excited about.

The Switch 2 ain't even one year old yet, I'm willing to cut it some slack on the ports and stuff. Lest we forget, people sure as heck didn't seem to mind when Switch 1's first year was filled with announcements of things that could already be played on PS4.

I dunno, I feel like there was a LOT of discussion of how empty the eShop was and lack of other things when it came out.

Yeah, agreed. Like, I still stand by my complete lack of disappointment over an expected nothingburger being nothing, but the first Switch discourse absolutely was in a similar state when it was new, except replace "underwhelming Fallout 4 port" with "underwhelming Skyrim port".

That Goemon collection really should make the jump. There's a fantastic fan translations already out there for the SNES games, and that's how I played 'em. Goemon 3 in particular is just *chef's kiss*.
