*Better* is kind of subjective, but I’d say it’s definitely comparable, and in the upper echelon of GB games. Levels are a bit shorter, but they feel more distinctive, graphics are much nicer, and it’s much more likely to be ported than the NES version since you don’t have to worry about the ESRB raising a stink about a graphically exploding Hitler head
Pretty much this - I find that the game has some interesting level design that takes advantage of your ability to unlatch/relatch from a stationary position (very handy in the last level!). It looks really sharp with some nice spritework and a more futuristic vibe, and some of the remixed tunes are also fantastic. I won't say which is better, more that both are incredible games.

It comes with save states and rewind, which is easy as it's gonna get.

Of course, it's Battletoads, so those features will only help so much.

Did they say if they are adding an Easy Version of Battletoads?
I forget how, but there is a way to download the Japanese version of the NSO app without too much hassle if you want to play that version (featuring things such as a slower Turbo Tunnel and a version of Clinger Wingers that isn't bugged in 2 player mode).

All four games were for all regions this go-around (including Kid Icarus GB, which hadn't seen release in Japan before)

Actually Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters did see a release on the Japanese Virtual Console back in 2012. That said nice it's finally on Switch Online for those who missed it.

Has anyone noticed that the way the Switch 2 tracks time in-game is completely wrong? (Maybe also regular Switch, I couldn't say.) I played Haiku the Robot earlier this week and spent maybe 10-12 hours on it, but the time on my save file said 66 hours. Now I'm playing Islets and I've spent maybe 5-6 hours, but my in-game timer says 23 and change.

I can't find anything in the console settings to explain this, it's absolutely baffling.

sounds like it's the fault of those games (and not the Switch 2) for not properly accounting for sleep mode or something

That's what I was thinking. Sleep mode tomfoolery. Do you close your games between sessions, or do you just go to the Home screen and put it in sleep mode while the game is running? If the latter, I suspect some games do not "pause" themselves correctly.

I just put it in sleep mode, because why would you close the game when the console's already "off"?

I've never seen this behavior on my PS5, but it's happened on two games in a row for the Switch, so I figured it was a console thing.

There’s some games it’s a thing with but not many, in my experience.

Made grinding in Digimon Cyber Sleuth real easy since the farm worked off how long the game was open, not how often it was being played

I play a decent amount of online and live service games. Some games with online components become real fucky if they are just left suspended, so I close all of my games before putting any console into sleep mode as force of habit, online or no.

Could just be the Switch. I've noticed that the Switch Year End Review tends to have strange times related to the games I've played, so something there seems screwy.

Yeah, I also close mine most of the time since a lot of games got weird when left open and my husband and I shared the console for the first year it was out and we didn't want to mess up each other's games. I kept the habit, and now that we have my Switch and his Switch 2 it's relevant again for when we're both playing games on the 2. About to be very relevant for Hyrule Warriors (me) and Metroid Prime 4 (him).

We're going to be traveling this week and it's the first time I've traveled with my Switch since all the Virtual Game Card stuff hit. I don't expect hotel internet to work with the Switch, I don't need to open all my previously owned games on my home internet to confirm I own them or anything first, right? It should just work?

You can put it on airplane mode and open a game as a test but if they are tied to your system already it should be fine.
Great idea on the airplane mode, thanks! I'd downloaded the various N64/Genesis/etc apps but hadn't loaded them yet so it was being weird about them, but then once I connected to the internet and cleared that "checking to see if the software can be played" message I was fine. Yay! Also holy crap there's a lot on these...

Tiny Bookshop (which is a lovely game I highly recommend) was taken off the store without the devs being notified a month or so ago. It was right at Black Friday when they were about to have a sale and the reddit for the game was going nuts. Turns out it's because the game uses the word "arsehole" and they arbitrarily upgraded the rating to Teen. I'm not at all surprised that the ratings process is so obtuse but it's very weird! Anyway, glad the game is back and hope the studio recovers.

The Walmart website's Switch 2 page has an advertisement on it that shows Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Pikmin 2 in the lineup for Switch Online. Make of that what you will.

Dragon Hopper and Zero Racers are getting released on Virtual Boy for Switch Online. I never imagined this is how we'd finally get to play the former.

This rules, seriously. Huge fan of Nintendo releasing unreleased retro games, and hope this continues with other retro games on NSO. Never expected anything more after Star Fox 2 on SNES Classic, so this is exciting!

Do these require the reproduction Virtual Boy headset to play?
My understanding is yes. Hopefully someone will figure out how to extract the ROMs, 'cause I have no interest in buying the attachment in either form.
