Pretty disappointing overall. I want MP4, and Virtual Boy is neat, but requiring that peripheral? Boo. I think I'll just get my actual one fixed.

I wonder if you could source the lenses to just kit-bash your own cardboard binocular Switch-holder for less than 25 bucks. Probably not worth the bother, but...

I'd probably be more positive on the Virtual Boy add-on if it came with a physical compilation of all the Virtual Boy games, rather than requiring NSO for it to work.

I'm excited to play Galaxy and Galaxy 2 again, the Yoshi game looks absolutely charming, I'm not sure why Samus is on a motorcycle and I'm excited to find out, but also:

I'm legit flabbergasted that there was no mention of the next 3D Mario game in this whole Direct.

Yeah. I think people pinning their hopes on new 3D Mario-starring-Mario are gonna have to wait a few years for that exact reason.

(As for me, I think now would be the perfect time for them to make a sequel to Wario World.)

Ironically, the biggest thing out of the Nintendo Direct for me didn't even make it to our Nintendo Direct: Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection. Ours showed Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection in its place. Protodude thinks it's because they didn't have an English build ready for a trailer yet.

Either way, I'm quite happy. Happier still that it's set for Xbox, unlike Battle Network Legacy Collection. I'll be over the moon if it gets a physical release, too. But I think even Capcom Fighting Collection 2 didn't get that.

NSO Virtual Boy.

The Good: Preserving these games for new generations to play!

The Bad: Why the fuck wasn't this done in some form ten years ago on the handheld with actual 3D?

The Ugly: Requiring (according to the fine print, anyway) a $25-$100 purchase on top of the cost of a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership to get headaches playing on their least-successful platform of all time.

Mario.

Some neat or okay stuff there. Wondering if the Galaxy 2-pack will validate the whole "should have been in 3D All-Stars" complaint from five years ago.

Still want a New Super Mario All-Stars with HD versions of the non-U NSMB games. Or maybe just reimagine the NES games (and World) again, like the original SMAS, but with modern visuals and sound instead.

Tennis seems kinda neat, but man, who asked for more babies?! At least it's just the core three... for now.

Movies are kinda jumping ahead in the timeline, but sure, why not. I hope they give Rosalina her echo-y voice back for this, instead of her Peach 2 voice.

Phanto in Super Mario Bros. Wonder? Yes, please! I don't much care for the new look, but hey, I'll take any SMB2 love I can get (especially since the movies seem to be skipping it).

Not Mario, exactly, but DK Island looks cool.

I may just be coping, but I truly don't think the $100 or $25 add ons are truly "required" for Virtual Boy NSO. One of them is cardboard, and while I haven't used Labo or anything, the system can't detect whether it's inserted in a cardboard box before launching a game, right? Surely this would mean that the Switch screen is just going to have the left and right eyes of the Virtual Boy on both sides of it's actual screen, so you could play by just looking at one side. Not having the option to disable that and just play in 2D isn't ideal, but I'm not convinced they won't let you do that yet either in the options or something. I think those add ons are "required" only if you want to play VB games in full 3D.

Seems like there must be cheap 3D glasses out there somewhere that would work.

I may very well be proven wrong, but I cannot see Nintendo launching a "free" game app (tied to a subscription) that downloads to your Switch and then forwards you to their online hardware store that is always well stocked and never has issues satisfying customer orders. Galactic Pinball just gonna boot up and look weird as hell.

In any case, we're totally gonna get Virtual Boy avatars and you better believe my sicko ass is gonna be rocking that until I become withered technology (although I will miss my current Famicom Disk System avatar)

Have they actually said anything more about it besides what was in the Direct (and, I guess, the product pages for the plastic shell and the cardboard dealio)? I know it's not far out from release, but Nintendo doesn't usually give too much information about this sort of thing until we get our hands on it and can actually say what is or is not in it, yes?

If it was somebody else, I'd be certain we would get a "2D" mode or some other way to play using just the Switch. But this is Nintendo, with everything that entails.

Donkey Kong Bananza: Emerald Rush is actually kind of cool. I dunno if it's worth $20, but there would probably be less anger towards it if Nintendo had actually explained what has been added and how it works. They just kind of dumped the DLC out there. DK Island seems small and empty with no new stuff to collect, but it's a very fun map for Emerald Rush due to its circular layout and various means of traversal.

Emerald Rush adds a mode to all the layers (except the interstitial tiny layers) with timed rounds where you need to get a set amount of gold/emerald before the time runs out. There are multiple levels of difficulty you can pick from that increase the amounts needed and start you out with less abilities (i.e. in difficulties 1-2 you start with all the Bananza Transformations, above that you have to find them from bananas). Collecting fossils and completing goals gives you a choice of 3 perks which add multipliers and bonuses to get even more loot. You can also choose to refill your health or reroll (at a cost) and try to get some better options. Unfortunately, there's no Vampire Survivors type "banish" command that I've seen yet, so you can't get an option off the board entirely.

Each layer has different strategies that are optimal, but you're still at the mercy of the RNG gods for what perks you can select. It has definitely made me play the game differently and use some of the transformations and abilities I never paid much attention to in the past. The game wipes all of your skills at the start, so you have free reign to customize your build to match the perks you selected.

A lot of stuff is locked at the beginning. You unlock more layers and perk choices the more that you play. The game even has a "ending" and another credit sequence once you collect enough, plus you can keep unlocking even more layers and perks after you beat it. There are statues to collect in DK Island and of course they cost banana chips (start out at 100 chips per statue, eventually increases to 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, etc). The website says they will have special timed events where you can get special statues, I'm curious if those will be collective group events or leaderboard type stuff.

tl;dr - Whether or not it's worth the money is up to individual taste, but Nintendo could have done a little more explaining what this mode was and how it works.

I picked up the DLC as well. I can 100% say I would not have bought this DLC if it was just advertised as Emerald Rush. I basically bought this because I had a LOT of fun with Bananza, and DK Island looked cool. Emerald Rush was a distant third reason to pull the trigger. If it was just "here's a new dk roguelike mode", I would have skipped it. That said...

For this very reason, I am having a blast. For instance, I barely used Zebra Transformation in the main game, but when I "only" get Zebra on a higher level Emerald Rush, I am thanking God. It really is a phenomenally fun way to play the game and discover new ways to fool around in the various Bananza worlds.

Yeah I'm not typically on the roguelike/lite style but it works really well in Emerald Rush. It's been surprisingly fun.

I've only played the relatively recent Klonoa HD versions, but that game is a lot of fun, and surprisingly bittersweet.

Crossposting in case anyone wants to see white Joycon 2 shells since I know the hardware mod thread is fairly niche:

Saw these (buttons and shell) on this video on Youtube, and despite the guy's warning, I went ahead and ordered just the joycon shells in white. I did follow his advice by not unhooking all the ribbon cables inside and just moving things over, gingerly, to the new shell, since I wasn't swapping out the rails since the shell isn't clear. That is, aside from one ribbon cable, in the right joycon, that has a screw hidden under it, which is not the case for the left joycon. Special fuck you to Nintendo for that, there's no reason that screw couldn't have been placed elsewhere (or removed entirely from the design).

In any case, everything works and I like how it looks!

My wife walked by as I was disassembling the right joycon, and I pointed out how gross it already was. She immediately replied "the white will show that much better" and walked off, which pissed me off because of how right she is lmao. Oh well, I'm not doing that again, I'm stuck with it now!

The Bad: Why the fuck wasn't this done in some form ten years ago on the handheld with actual 3D?
The Worse: it would seem that with custom firmware the 3DS is perfectly capable of emulating the Virtual Boy

That said, I absolutely love Galactic Pinball and will do what it takes to play it

Nintendo did buy an animation studio a few years back, and I wouldn't be surprised if their long term goal was to build it up to where it can make feature films without having to partner with an outside studio. I imagine we will see several Oscar-bait short films between now and then.
