The Nintendo 3DS is dead. Long live the 3DS!

Since i have so many 3DS games and need a way to play them for a while going forward, I went ahead and bought a New 2DS XL, refurbished from Nintendo's store. The black and turquoise one. Absolutely stunning piece of hardware, once agian. Also, I think Nintendo's version of refurbished actually means never ever used once.

I have way too many 3DS games considering I just play Pokemon, so I'm doing something about it and clearing my backlog! First up is Ever Oasis. It's from Grezzo, who did the Zelda 3DS ports and some of the staff worked on Secret of Mana. You hunt for people to populate your oasis and join your squad and defeat monsters for loot that helps your oasis grow and to make better equipment. Improvements to your Oasis benefit you and your squad.
It's fully 3D, reminiscent of Ocarina of Time, and has dungeons which are quite like that game but using your team's skills as opposed to dungeon weaponry. Combat is all real time with three party members you can swap between at any time.

It's a great game. I get the nasty feeling it didn't do well because of when it came out (the Switch was come out) and it's a huge shame. It's something special and I'd like it to have become a series.

I played it somewhat recently under exceptional-to-me circumstances where I was basically isolated from my usual social circles, constrained to a hotel room for 10+ days straight. This is in the context of someone who doesn't travel much and is always at least connected to people digitally from home. For whatever reason, I picked Ever Oasis as my main source of leisure time in that period, and whether it is because of the game's innate qualities or the context I experienced it in, it became a lifeline for me in adjusting to something I wasn't really comfortable with, both elevating its strengths and masking its weaknesses. I loved it for the focus on community it had in a time I had little, and the technical scale and ambition of the production (it's Grezzo after all), while the nondescript music, specifics of the racial portrayals and limitations of the party compositions in relation to exploration were things that only became more pressing upon later reflection. It's ultra-saccharine which is not a qualitative statement on its own, just an indication that tonally it's pretty different from other Mana-likes around. I hope Ishii was happier making it than those last trying days at his former company; in all likelihood he was because the game has a personal thank you note from him tucked away in the digital manual. That's a gesture that doesn't happen every day.

It's difficult to think of many other games like it that have a brown person in the starring role, occupying all the prominent promotional material, though even then "person of colour" gets interpreted through a non-human lens which includes skin tones from purple to green, and the direct female analogue for the protagonist is lighter-skinned by default. One step forward, two steps somewhere.

It's weird to think that the 3DS is dead considering how much I still play it and how huge the backlog is. So many Etrian Odyssies ya'll

OK, so I hacked mine and am about to rip all of my cartridge games so I can just play them from the menu. One small issue - it doesn't rip the save at the same time. Anyone know how to copy the save to the SD card version of the game?

You want the program called Checkpoint. That will allow you to manage save files in either direction (from cart to sd card/from sd card to cart).

EDIT: That apparently works with Switch, now, which it didn't when I downloaded it several years ago lol. Make sure you get the 3DS version.

Is 3DS hacking eShop dependant? Just wondering if I should try it now or if it's safe to postpone for a summer holiday project.

Brilliant, I'll have to try that out.

If you're going to hack, I strongly advise you get Pokémon Picross from the store. It's possible without it, but a lot more annoying

See here for a guide on hacking your 3DS. You don't need an eShop connection, but for now it's easier to do that way. If/when the eShop goes offline, it should still be possible to hack your 3DS, from what I'm reading. Still, just in case I'm wrong, it might be a good idea to hack it sooner rather than later.

I hacked my 2DS recently, I was going to do the eshop method but the game you have to download needs an account which I didn’t feel like signing up for so I did it the other way in the guide linked above and it was still fairly quick and easy.

Tangentially related if you ever wanted to hack a Wii U for some reason, it really does depend on an eshop entry point.

Apparently there is a browser exploit called Tiramisu now. Not sure the particulars, but I think you have to run the "health and safety" app each time (which you can set to autoboot).

Yeah, it's also safer than cold booting Haxchi from what I understand, since you can't accidentally delete the app it piggybacks off of.

All the Atlus stuff is on sale again, so if you're gonna buy, now is the time. I snagged SMT IV: Apocalypse and Radiant Historia: PC, and I'm debating if I want to go nuts and buy all the Etrian Odyssey and Persona Q games along with 7th Dragon III. Only trouble is that I've never actually finished any EO game, so... perhaps not.

What's Shenmue?
Aaaaugh, I bought two Etrian games just last week!

I didn't pick up Soul Hackers yet, though, so I guess that's some consolation…

On the other hand, unless you hack your DS, this might be the last chance you get to play any EO games in the original hardware. So if you got a passing interest in any of these I'd take the chance (PQs are charming, but god, they just. keep. talking.)

I may just stick with the EO games and skip Persona Q/Q2. I hear 7th Dragon III is good, so I'll probably take a swing on that as well. And I'm glad I checked my collection, I already have EOV...

I'll vouch for 7th Dragon III. Out of all the EO material on the system, I'd prioritize IV and V, also.

I love 7th Dragon. And EO IV and V. And PQ2, though mostly because the female protagonist from P3P is basically the main character.

I'll throw in for 7th Dragon III as well, though I also recommend 2020 and 2020-II on PSP too to get the best experience out of the 3DS game (though even without having played those games, you'll still have a great time with it).

Sounds like I've got a gameplan then. Will grab Nexus, Untold 2, and 7th Dragon III when I get a chance. I do have Untold and EOIV/V physically.

I also decided to get Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation because we all know Nintendo won't drop the price. Now I need to decide if owning the physical copy of Birthright and Conquest is enough or buying Birthright again digitally so it all ties together nicely. (Or just waiting until everything goes down and hacking my system. *cough*cough*)

I have to say, too many of these games have some really sketchy DLC options. Was looking through Radiant Historia and I mean, come on. I hated Nintendo's approach to FE Fates, too.

How risky is it to get a hacked New 2DS XL off eBay or something? I've been shopping around for one (my 3DS is a launch model and I want to get a New 2DS XL while they're still easy to find) and am trying to decide whether to get a stock model or not.

I'm thinking of taking advantage of this sale, despite having very little experience with Atlus games... I always hear such good things and I'd like to give them a try. So far 7th Dragon III, Etrian Odyssey IV, SMT: Strange Journey Redux and Radiant Historia have caught my eye. Bearing in mind that I've never touched a Persona, SMT or EO game in my life, is there anything else I can't live without?

Devil Survivor Overclocked is an excellent SRPG. Devil Survivor 2 less so (way worse plot and terrible female character designs) but still fun to play.

Soul Hackers is one of the best individual spinoffs Megami Tensei has had, is representative of the series' older aesthetic and appeal without being a steep and obstructing challenge in playing an RPG of its age in relative terms, has a related successor coming out later in the year if you end up playing that sometime too, and just genuinely stands apart from its siblings in usually positive ways, with this (very good) port being the only avenue to play it in English at this time. It does very well as an introduction or a totally self-contained one-off if that's all you want from it.

I didn't clue in until popping onto my 3DS wishlist that this is a general Sega sale, meaning every Sega game is on sale too — such as, for example, the 3D Classics series. They're only two or three bucks now, perfect time to snap them up if you haven't already.

It's really crazy. I went ahead and hacked my 3DS so I could import a completed save file for Layton vs Phoenix Wright - as the game doesn't even give you the option to download the DLC until you've beaten the game. Each 3DS game seems to handle DLC completely differently.
