the next next gen: talking about the ninth generation of videogame consoles

The tear down video showed where the fans were and, based on the positioning, I assume optimal airflow requires verticality, so it's just as well. I was looking at my entertainment center today, at the spot my PS4 is, and I'd be pushing it to try to slot it in there.

I'm hoping this is specifically for heat dissipation because the fans on my PS3 are a nightmare when I actually run them
Watch the teardown video from two pages ago. The vast majority of the PS5's volume is built around heat dissipation. And they have very neat features in it that the XSX won't like a dust catcher you can easily vacuum out to help keep the inners of your PS5 cleaner for longer (and thus keep the fan speeds down, thus keeping the system noise down)

BUGSNAX is gonna be a free PS+ game.

The PS+ Collection Games for PS5 are as follows:

From Worldwide Studios:
  • Bloodborne
  • Days Gone
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • God of War
  • Infamous Second Son
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • The Last Guardian
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Until Dawn
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
From our third-party publishers and developers:
  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Battlefield 1
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles Edition
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  • Fallout 4
  • Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition
  • Monster Hunter: World
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Persona 5
  • Resident Evil 7 biohazard
That's a pretty good collection of games, especially if you skipped out on last gen.

Rassafrassin'sassafras I just BOUGHT FFXV Royal on digital so I could have it available on my PS4 at all times and was looking forward to installing it on 5!

Ah well, I was planning on getting inFamous 2 to support the Ghost of Tsushima devs some more, so I guess it's a zero-sum outcome.

Despite owning Sony consoles my entire life, I have yet to actually subscribe to PS+. I don't think this changes things for me...

I... own most of those games from the collection. The only one that interestes me somewhat and don't have is Resident EVIIl.

You know, given how many games find their way to subscription services these days and how little time I have to revisit old favorites, even during the pandemic (thanks to an ever growing backlog, mostly) I'm starting to wonder why I buy games. There are at least 6 games in that list that I own and haven't played beyond the first hour or at all and are patiently waiting in the backlog. Maybe it's time to reconsider my purchasing habits.

My inner 20 year old is scandalized beyond belief that I just typed that.

It's OK - that means you get to keep FFXV if you ever drop from PS+ or the conditions of the collection change. But honestly I'm surprised they went with Royal, since every other game in there is the base edition, no DLC included.

The base version of FFXV is long since delisted from PSN, so I guess they didn't have a choice.

Battlefield 5 would have been a better grab than Battlefield 1 but not a bad list at all. I've never played a Ratchet and Clank game or a Persona game, and I've been curious about Until Dawn for a bit now, so I'm glad to know I'll have options.

If anyone managed to preorder a PS5 but all of the accessories were snapped up, the PlayStation store has those things currently available. I was able to get a DualSense charger. Camera and the headset were also in stock. (Controllers have been in stock in multiple places.)

Ubisoft has announced that a handful of its games will not be PS5 compatible at launch

None of these games were on Sony's prior list of incompatible games so I have... concerns if other publishers have incompatible games to add.

Here’s the full list:

  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles India
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles China
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Russia
  • Star Trek Bridge Crew
  • Werewolves Within
  • Space Junkies
  • Risk

EDIT: Or... not, they've now removed the post announcing this with just claims of "innacuracies" in the list. Truly bizarre.

I preordered an extra PS5 controller, and it got delivered early today. It's... weird but nice.

The controller has some nice heft to it and feels very solid. The face buttons all feel right. The D-Pad is basically the Vita's D-Pad so it feels weird to use, but it's not bad, just has a different texture.

The shoulder buttons are kinda amazing. The triggers have a lot of natural tension and feel more like an X-Box controller. Using it on a PC, it's not like I could engage the haptic feedback in the triggers, but they still feel good anyways.

The sticks are PlayStation sticks, but the texture of the pads are probably the best a PS controller has been. I hope they don't fall apart like the PS4 controller's do. They don't *feel* like they will, but only time will tell.

The Start and Share buttons are a little bit smaller, and they also require a little bit more oomph to press, meaning you'll never accidentally hit the share button ever again probably.

The light-strips are pretty inoffensive and should placate any dissenters of the DS4's light bar.

The ergonomics of it are pretty solid. It's a perfect fit for my hands at least.

The USB-C port on the top is really nice. It's pretty snug and doesn't feel like it'll wear out as quickly as the micro-USB port on the DS4. (The DS4 I've been using on my PC previously, the USB port on it has been getting loose.)

I look forward to when the drivers on this get sorted out better. My desktop can see and synch up with it via bluetooth, but it'll probably take a little while for games to begin seeing it and supporting it natively. I can get it to work with Steam Big Picture Mode when I connect it physically with a wire, but Steam thinks it's a PS4 controller, and doesn't see the device when it's hooked up via bluetooth alone.

I've heard you can connect the Dual Sense to Spotify as a speaker and the haptic feedback will pick up the sound. Give it a try!

The only thing I'm concerned about the DSense - is it larger? The DS fits perfectly in my hands, while I feel the Xbox One controller just a tad large.

Seems to be slightly larger.

My friend got her extra controller in today and she said it feels quite a bit beefier. Got some heft to it, which seems to be a running theme with the PS5.

I don't use Spotify, otherwise I would give it a try. But the speaker definitely gets picked up as a speaker in Windows. In fact, my computer automatically switched audio outputs to it when I first connected it! It's pretty trivial to switch it back in Windows 10 though, so it's nbd, but I was confused for a minute why none of the expected sounds were coming out of my headphones.

It is bigger, but the difference is honestly negligible. We're talking maybe a few millimeters larger in any given dimension. It fits in my hands almost exactly the same. Here's a picture for comparison:

The heftiness is noticeably more, but not to the point where it feels heavy. I just measured the weight on my kitchen scale. The DS4 comes out at 214g, and the DualSense comes in at 282g. For other points of comparison, my iPhone XR in a case is ~240g, and a Switch Pro Controller is 247g.

One thing I forgot to mention is that this extra DualSense controller didn't come with a usb cable. Which is basically w/e, when it'll accept any USB-C cable out there, and comes w/ a rechargeable battery built in, unlike your standard xbox controller. I'm pretty sure one comes w/ the PS5 as well.

Vita had a great D-Pad. If they actually copied it, that's a great move.

Indeed, I don't think I'll even have a PS5 for a while (at least not until stores restock) but I love the Vita's pad and it makes me want a DualSense now just for PC gaming.

This makes me wonder if perhaps there's some discrepancy between what Sony considers "playable" as far as backwards compatibility, versus what publishers think is acceptable in terms of not having glitches/errors that might make their game not look or run as well as they think it should.

"Is God of War BC?"

"Sir?"

"Does it boot?"

"Yes, but Kratos's face is on his shoulder and the Boy shoots copies of his leg instead of arrow--"

"It works."

"The PS5 screams every time the axe comes back!"

"It works."

I mean, Sony told us themselves. That while many of the games it considers 'playable' will have bugs, they'll still play. They probably passed over a few game breaking bugs here and there because doing a completely thorough play-testing is impossible for AAA studios to do with individual games they release brand new, never mind a backlog of thousands of legacy titles. But I'm sure for the vast majority of titles it'll work fine, when the base architecture of the PS5 is really just a beefier PS4.

There's a github repo floating around that claims to have scraped the data from sony's apis which splits the games into "NOT COMPATIBLE" "BOOTABLE" and "COMPATIBLE" where all of Ubi Soft's additional games are listed as bootable. I don't totally trust it, but I don't think it's implausible for it to be on the level. The list of bootable games is not insubstantial but not exactly huge, a few dozen titles it seems like .Some other things are listed as not compatible that Sony didn't mention, but these are typically no longer available for purchase (such as FFXV Episode Duscae).

Thanks for the Dual Sense impressions, guys.

I ran into that list too and most of the "Not Compatible" list are demos. The only thing that hurts from that list is P.T.

The "Bootable" list is beefy, though. Doom VFR, Prey, The Nonary Game and Sleeping Dogs are there, as well as some first party games. Of course, there's no info of what "Bootable" really means and at what moment a Bootable game becomes Not Compatible. And of course, the list itself should be taken with a grain of salt. It's at https://andshrew.github.io/supreme-enigma/ if anybody's interested.

Huh, looks like I better hurry up and take Saint Seiya: Soldier's Soul off of my PS4 backlog before I make the move to PS5.
