The Mega Drive Mini 2 - Sega Minis What Nintendon't

Sprite

(He/Him/His)

Next drop of Mega Drive 2 games:

Cartridge games

  • Gain Ground
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Populous
  • Sorcerian
  • King Colossus
  • Viewpoint
SEGA CD games

  • Ecco the Dolphin CD
  • Robo Aleste
  • Romance of the Three Kingdoms III
  • Shin Megami Tensei
  • Tenka Fubu: Eiyū-tachi no Hōkō

No word on any more Genesis 2 games. I assume Gain Ground, Phantasy Star II, and Ecco CD are shoo-ins. Maybe Populous? I also assume Viewpoint as a bonus game will make it. I don't know enough about the rest, though obviously the Japan-only releases will stay Japan-only, most likely.

Viewpoint? Viewpoint?! That was the Sega Genesis at peak "biting off more than it could chew" mode. It's sort of a conversion, but the feeling of compromise is everywhere, and it STILL has a hard time dealing with it all. Things just lose their majesty and immensity from the arcade game. Vibrant colors becomes grays and greens, sprites lack the sharp tangibility of the arcade game, bullets are reduced in number, some obstacles are missing... it's like the designers gave the Genesis half of the game, and it still collapses in a heap over the finish line.

I finally got my post on the Mega Drive Mini 2 4th wave together with my reaction:

Good read, @WildcatJF. The more time that passes, the more a sense of dread creeps in. Just waiting for them to dump Sewer Shark and Night Trap on there and call it a day.

Distinctly miffed that there seems to be no release in UK land, where the Mega Drive soundly stomped the SNES. There's definitely a market here. I'm hoping they repeat the "English versions can be selected" thing that the original had, despite being almost certain it won't.

I almost wrote that, lol. But the comments of only one exclusive Sega CD game made me refrain, haha.

I'd like to know exactly what they're doing to improve Viewpoint. Is it going to run at a higher clock speed than other Genesis games, or are they diving into the code to make improvements? The problems with Genesis Viewpoint go beyond mere slowdown.

If the one exclusive for the US is an FMV game, I think we should all pray it's Wirehead
Haha, of course. I actually played through that one a year back - actually got a physical copy of it when a retro gaming shop near me was getting out of the business... and then got back into the business.

Clock speed increase is confirmed. But I don't expect more than that personally.

M2 owns Dennin Aleste? How much of Compile's library do they own? I was under the impression that the games were owned by either Aiky or Compile Heart.

It would be wild if the US team specifically asked for the game and as a result they only put the US version on the MD Mini 2 but I guess that also wouldn’t be surprising.

Per a Dengeki interview, looks like Robo Aleste is really likely for the US version.

M2 owns Dennin Aleste? How much of Compile's library do they own? I was under the impression that the games were owned by either Aiky or Compile Heart.

Here's a wild question: that game was released by Tengen here. Does... does Warner still own a claim to that? Could that be a problem here?

From what I could gather from that interview and a little curiosity, M2 acquired the rights to the Aleste series somewhere along the line (which is why they did the Aleste Collection compilation and made GG Aleste 3/Senjin Aleste a couple years ago, and MUSHA keeps reappearing on various platforms. I couldn't find an exact article stating this in English in a quick search, but I trust HG101 and Okunari on this). To my knowledge they only own Aleste, much like how Sega only owns Puyo Puyo. Per the Compile Station website on D4 Enterprises website, they seem to have ownership of Zanac, Guardic and Madō Monogatari.

Robo Aleste is being included with the Mega Drive Mini 2 along with Dennin Aleste, so M2 seems to have the rights to the localization, Tengen/Atari be damned, and the US team specifically requested it, so it'll very likely be included. Warner at this point has no ties to Atari so I imagine they won't care (they're too busy fucking up their entire business to be concerned about this anyway).

That's not... completely true. Atari Games (the arcade division, the one that was also Tengen) was passed around a lot, but they ended up with Midway (which is why all those Midway compilations on PS2, etc, had Atari Games games in them), and Midway's corpse became WB Games. I'm not POSITIVE that the Atari Games/Tengen IP still resides there (I don't think anyone knows what Discovery plans to do with WB Games), but it's possible they still have some shell of publishing rights to Robo Aleste.

Ah, that's right, I tend to get the two portions of Atari's legacy mixed up. Still, as I said earlier, Okunari commented that Robo Aleste is coming out on the Mega Drive Mini 2 alongside Dennin Aleste in the Dengeki stream and in the interview, so it seems one way or another M2 worked out what needed to be done to get those rights for Japan. It would seem likely that the Genesis Mini 2 will also feature it if they went through the effort once, since the same core licensing team is working on these minis.

I'm not even sure that would apply, because they may only have the publishing rights to the Sega CD version, not as part of divergent hardware that emulates it. I remember back in the early 1980s, there were two Atari 2600 versions of Frogger, because Parker Bros had the cartridge rights, while Arcadia had the magnetic media rights.

No Lunar, no Snatcher. Looking forward to hacking it and taking out fucking Night Trap, Sewer Shark, and Mansion of Hidden Souls.

The Mega Drive Mini 2's final wave includes the following:
Mega Drive: Crusader of Centy (Shin Souseiky Ragnacenty), Ex-Ranza (Ranger X), Star Cruiser, Granada, Midnight Resistance, Atomic Runner Chelnov, and Honoo no Tokyuuji Dodge Danpei!

Mega CD: Night Trap, Mahou no Shoujo: Silky Lip, and Captain Tsubasa!

The bonus games...kept coming and coming, haha. M2 ported the 1982 arcade game Super Locomotive to the Mega Drive, there's two Quiz games, Mega Q 2022 and Sega Q 2022, a revised port of the Saturn's Puyo Puyo Sun that is 2P only, and the previously unreleased Devi to Pii, made by Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka before he joined the Sonic 3 team. We also have a brand new port of Space Harrier II done by M2 alongside a port of Space Harrier that is coupled together as one package (running on the "Mark V")! These are enhanced with better scrolling, sprite scaling and frame rate but still running on original hardware, so there's a fair amount of flickering. Still though, these are definitely improved!

No Konami at all is shocking.

Also, this was confirmed for Europe this morning:

Also super weird that they didn't do the correct power button for us. No big deal at all, just odd
