I still enjoy 2. Even if it gets up its own ass, the action scenes make up for it. I can’t say the same about 3, however…
According to Lana at a talk yesterday (the video is set not to embed), apparently WB had been trying to get them to make another sequel for years and offering a lot of money to do so, but they had no interest because they felt the story they told was complete and had no more to say. But, after their parents and some other close friends died, Lana had an idea for another Matrix story she wanted to tell as she was processing her grief. Lily "wanted to process her grief differently" and "was on a different path," Lana says.
I just wanna say Yahya was incredible in HBO's Watchmen, and I will watch this movie solely because of him.
Also he is great in Candyman.
Showed the kids Matrix Reloaded, which they also liked.
At the very least it’s a purposeful reference.
I'll go even further and say that being up its own ass is at least 60% of what's good about The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions would've been better if it had gone farther up its own ass.
I have a good feeling about The Matrix Resurrections, so I'm going to make a prediction right now: all The Matrix movies that are powers of 2 are good.

In retrospect it's funny how people talked about Reloaded and Revolutions. They complained that the sequels were up their own ass too much with philosophy. I think the two movies are interesting on a story level and what they have to say about reality. I just find the action really boring and pointless.
I have never had any problem with the level of up-their-own-ass the movies are, that's sorta the point. I find the action in Reloaded quite fun. It's Revolutions I find boring (it discards the rhythm of "exposition, chase, exposition, fight, exposition, fight, exposition, chase, etc." that the first two movies established. A lot of the characters are stuck in transit or in place while things happen elsewhere. Not enough fights to punctuate things, no chases to speak of, the Zion siege action isn't a substitute, and the final fight is...a bit silly.
I like aspects of it, but as a movie it doesn't hold together nearly so well as the first two. IDK, we're rewatching it this week, we'll see if my opinion changes since I last watched it a few years ago. But probably not.

I liked the development in Reloaded that he's very popular but his beliefs aren't universal (though Lock is a total one-note loser of a character and nothing at all as a foil). But yeah, he's almost entirely inconsequential in Revolutions, and it's not really fair.

Of the characters in the original film my favourite was Morpheus by an absolute mile, so it genuinely hurt to see him sidelined so horribly. If you're doing a subplot where a much loved character's reputation is being dragged through the mud you're generally meant to vindicate them by the end, but instead they just made him completely irrelevant.
I mean, he was vindicated in that Neo was the one and did save everybody, but they didn't give him shit to do.

Hearing that Laurence Fishburne gets done dirty in the sequels makes me a lot less interested to ever watch these movies.
I wouldn't say he does in the second one, and he has some extremely good action sequences.
Yeah. Structurally, he is a John the Baptist character in a movie that is focused on Jesus. He is absolutely vindicated, but he has less to do as the story shifts to primarily telling the main character's story. The herald's role is mostly over by the third movie. He's already done his job.
They could have given him something to do in the defense of the city, though. Had him go along on the trip to 01 to bear witness. Something like that. Instead he just kinda hunkers down for the majority of the film.
Reloaded also has some great messaging around Morpheus and the reasons Lock treats him the way he does so I wouldn't say he's sidelined at all in that one. In Revolution that same messaging comes out even stronger to really get the point across, and the reason Morpheus gets very intentionally and purposefully sidelined is very appropriate for the thematic through-line of the trilogy. I feel like his treatment is very much meant to be frustrating and unsatisfying, and if you pin Lock for what he represents, even moreso.
On the other hand, if the complaint in question is the amount of narrative attention, you could do a lot worse than having your death depicted in countless adaptations of Salome across basically every artistic medium.
Over the past few days, I rewatched the first 3 movies and watched The Animatrix for the first time, and I'm here to confirm that every Matrix movie still fucking rules.
Excited for the new one soon. Reviews are predictably divided and obviously it's going very meta in a way that sounds like it will annoy many, which I'm excited for whether or not it works for me.

Good movie imo. (new one) Thrilling use of NPH and Jonathan Groff’s homosexual menace. Jessica Henwick very compelling. I guess I should watch the second season of Sense8 someday.
I liked it. Felt like the conclusion I wanted Revolutions to be.
New Matrix was good. It feels like the rules were a little less clear than they used to be, but the emotional throughline really worked.

Which, to be fair, is quite a high bar to clear. But there's something about the staging and cinematography that isn't working for me in this movie. I went in hoping for something on the level of the highway scene in Reloaded and this never quite got there.
