The \m/etal thread

Not sure if you would consider Portrayal of Guilt metal or hardcore, but their new album shreds.
Always down to see more hardcore/hardcore adjacent stuff in here! A lot of the stuff I really like lately blurs the lines between metal and hardcore, not so much in the "deathcore" or "metalcore" styles as calcified by bands in the early 2000s but in the was Xibalba, Fuming Mouth, Terminal Nation, Hanging Fortress, et al are doing basically crossover but with death instead of thrash.

To that effect, have just gotten onto Bad Ideals. They mix up thrash, hardcore, maybe some death metal, just lots of things into a slurry that sounds like it's brawling its way down a staircase in the best way possible. The moments when they barrel into a stomping break riff are absolutely killer! Have yet to put them to the true test for any hardcore/metal band (does this, in fact, increase my squat/deadlift?) but we'll find out soon!

And in the opposite direction I've found a new psych/doom band I really dig! Blackwater Holylight merge big fatass riffs with ethereal singing and will occasionally let some grunge show through. Excellent stuff.

Great! On a slightly more traditional front, I've been enjoying the new Grima album.

the grima is great. here's a couple more bandcamp albums i've been enjoying:
no reinventing the wheel, just some great tech death.
french black metal, and it does kinda remind me of MkM stuff (temple of baal, aosoth). generally relentless, a little melodic. the only thing is that the production is very sharp, which isn't an anomaly, but it was striking for me
great conceptually, great musically. variates between atmo-black and some more harsh orthodox stuff

and of note, paysage d'hiver released a preview for the upcoming album

That Colossus album sounds rad. Will check that out further.

Recent stuff that tripped my trigger:

Enforced's new album fucken RIIIIIIPS! Added a little death metal to their crossover thrash and it really works.

New God's Hate!

Hardcore band fronted by a pro-wrestler featuring a terminator-samurai machine gunning yokia on the cover art? YOU ALREADY KNOW

Hideous Divinity is teasing a new EP with an Aliens theme. Two great tastes that taste great together! If you're not familiar, HD are in the Hate Eternal/Nile sort of school of brutal, fast, and grandiose death metal. It is exhausting in the best possible way.

That Harakiri for the Sky is great, but it's just too long for me. It's mostly that I'm less into that blackgaze sound than i was even like 2 years ago.

great stuff. that god's hate was a lot of fun.
also, new Blut Aus Nord Forhist album. Great, sounds a bit like BaN, but less mechanical and more melodic?

this was a fun one too. Just very solid Melodic Black Metal.

and Panopticon's upcoming now has 2 preview tracks. gonna be an emotional one

I've heard this same sentiment from a few people over the past few years, but blackaze/atmospheric black metal is still the sweet spot for me. (But I am a self-admitted metal dilettante).

also great

and in line with the portal track, ALTARAGE most recent album is now out. It's so good. All the dissonant, swirling riffs you could possible want.

Since it fits in the thread, does anyone have some good recommendations that are specifically symphonic metal with English lyrics? The only stuff I've really found is Nightwish and Within Temptation.
Way, way late on this, but I stumbled across The Dark Element the other day (via Worlds Apart from Allen/Olzon). In particular, I think Songs the Night Sings is fantastic stuff.

This thread needs more retro-80s woman-fronted named-after-obscure-Transformers-spinoff evil-AIs-taking-over-hell metal.

I just finished listening to that album, ha! I really dig the sort of spiritual successor band, Beast in Black.

True! Just thought it was worth bringing them up. :)

I do really like female-fronted metal bands, though.

Exactly what I'm looking for, thank you so much!

also on the metal front some titans releasing new albums today
wolves in the throne room are back on the black metal front
sodom has a new ep (though im not sure if it's new material tbh... haven't listened yet)
this one probably isn't metal, but ulver used to be so I'll just post their new live album as well
and deafheaven are also falling away from black metal
and btbam have followed up their best album (it's on streaming as well... idk soundcloud's streaming policy i just copied a link)

New Beast in Black album, Dark Connection. Good stuff. The video from this gives me major Flashback vibes with a smattering of The Dig or other LucasArts games.

I know atmospheric black metal is played for a lot of people, but there are few things I like better than beautiful music overlaid with someone screaming incomprehensibly. On that note, new MØL releases tomorrow:

Also, this song by Sadness that released earlier this year is one of my favorites of 2021:

Pathology released another album Friday. I'm not all that into them, but that's mostly because I don't like slam. Not really that much of it here, but also riffing isn't as striking to me as their previous ones. really great dying fetus attempt here though

Hey, so I realize this isn't exactly metal, but perhaps it's somewhat metal-adjacent and there's no other remotely active thread I can think to put it in... I'm cleaning out my office and found a folded poster that's of both the front and back cover of this album. Is this something that's likely to be of interest to anyone (either here or in general)? Just wanted to check before it gets thrown out or sent to goodwill whether it might actually be worth something to anyone...

(I have literally no idea where it came from or why it's in my office. Very odd.)

I don't listen to really heavy/black metal, but I do like some of the melodic stuff like ISIS's In the Absence of Truth. I was on some streaming station while working out, and was recommended Empress Rising by Monolord. It's a 13 minute song with one riff, but it's a good one, and was good to zone out to while moving weights around.
