The new Faceless Burial album is fucking phenomenal! Nice blend of early-Suffo brutality and some progressive/weirdo riffing. The drum sound is absolutely perfect, too! The drummer is also in Internal Rot (ffo: Insect Warfare). When they shift down into a stomp it's like getting punched in the chest. One of those rare death metal gems that works well in a lot of different settings: want to space out and get lost in a labyrinth of riffs and drum patters? Ok! Is it squat day and you need a kick in the ass to move that barbell? Ok!

Absolutely love the cover art, as well.

Took me a few years to get around to it but Formulae is fast becoming my favourite Master's Hammer album. It has this occult-industrial inflection that's a far cry from their first album, but anyone who could stomach the more avant-garde work like Šlágry will probably be able to get into it. Franta's vocals sound better than ever, too!

I absolutely love records that came from the 00s scene that seemed to be trying to push out just the most caveman primitive brutal death metal. For most of these you could pick a handful of different moments from the album and they'd sound remarkably similar (eg: almost note for note) but it simply works. For one just the sheer impenetrable fuzz that comes from rolling double kicks, gurgled vocals, and absurdly distorted guitars playing some sort of imperceivable riff just makes it so dedicated to a sound it's hard to fault it. for two it's nearly psychedelic for that same reason. for three snare drums kick ass

I don't listen to music all the way into that pocket too often, but goddamn sometimes that is the only thing that'll scratch the itch! I second you on it being psychedelic - it's just so dense and over the top that it transcends "brutality" sometimes.

I had pre-ordered the new Of Feather and Bone and just got the CD in the mail today. Holy shit, you guys, it is incredible. I got into them when they were mostly a hardcore band, so watching their sound change so drastically was interesting. Their last full length was solid, but eventually I just sort of got bored with it. Something about it just didn't stick with me once it was over.

Not sure how to describe the new one, as it's not terribly different on paper, but the whole thing feels *sharper*. It is giving me the same sort of "hair on the back of your neck stands up" instant jolt that Vitriol provides. Not that they sound too much like Vitriol, just that the pure goddamn fury is the same. Can't wait until the digital version is released on Bandcamp so I can play it in the garagegym.

I go through long periods of not listening to much of this stuff at all, but just yesterday I remembered Brodequin. I reckon you'd get a kick out of this album's mix of fuzzy, waspish guitars and popcorn maker drums that occasionally settle into fat grooves.

I don't really count myself as a metal fan, but every now and again I'll listen to some black metal and be utterly enraptured; when I'm in the right mood for it, it's just the most incredible music. Currently I am really enjoying the latest Paysage d'Hiver album, Im Wald.

The Botanist album referenced in OP has been released. IT's good! Tracks like Palisade really call back to the early sound. Very harsh, focused a lot on big drums and tremolo dulcimer hits. Really like it, especially when they're using the black metal screeches. It'll be hard with their current setup to actually make something I like as much as the debut, but this is really good. Having said that... I still might like ecosystem more, but for totally different reasons

I'd recommend Kamelot, starting from their album Epica (not to be confused with the band of the same name). The previous albums are also good (well... maybe not the first two, before they got Roy Kahn on vocals), but don't have the symphonic sound.

After Forever is s also pretty good, but they're not active any longer, I think.

Also, Metallica has two double albums called S&M, one from 1999 and the other from 2019. These are live performances by Metallica backed with the San Francisco Symphony. They're both good, though I have a preference for the first one. Greater sense of novelty, I suppose. Or nostalgia. At any rate, the first S&M is what primed me to like symphonic metal in the first place.

Oh jesus, that first Metallica S&M album will always have a special place in my heart. Cut back to 2000/2001. A young Mokrap, a ball of teenage angst, sits in a locker room. It's Friday night. It's highschool football. S&M is playing on a boombox. Mokrap attends to his gear, no longer just pads. It's armor. This is the battle of the black gate. This is for all of Middle goddamn Earth. Strap it on and fight for glory.

Fuck, if I even just hear like 10 seconds of that album I can smell football.

While I'm on the topic of "body music," Fuming Mouth have signed to Nuclear Blast and dropped a little EP this past month. Highly recommend it and the previous full-length. A lot of bands are marrying hardcore and death metal these days in a way much different than the last time we saw that with deathcore/metalcore, and it hits better for me than those sounds did. (Everflowing) Streams which saw convergence in the earliest days of Swedish death metal and Bolt Thrower and then separated are slamming back together and Fuming Mouth are champions of that collision.

the Vothana album from this year is, unfortunately, great. Biệt Động Quân / Commando is the name. I'd recommend finding a free download though, mostly because the guy is cut from the nsbm cloth and it's funny how mad he gets about people downloading his music.

I really like the Demolition Hammer/Solstice/Devastation death-thrash sound. It's often viewed as purely a transitional phase in metal history, and I can see the argument for that. Some bands have recently been mining that period for influence to great effect, though! A new one I have recently heard of has an album coming out on xmas and I'm pretty jazzed about it!

I wasn't hugely into this, but it's very fun. It's got brutal and tech death tags, but really this feels very deathcore to me? I guess it's kind of deathcore without much in the way of breakdowns, which is more or less a variant of tech death (which isn't exactly a very specified subgenre)

if you're looking for something disturbing, scary, jarring, etc, Dosanjos have put out a new album. Their first album was basically too discomforting to finish and this isn't far off that. It's only kind of metal, in that it takes a lot of cues from black metal, but it's really it's own noisy and shouty thing. Closest I can think of is Abu Lahab but that's also because both them and dosanjos only sound like themselves.
