So as noted elsewhere, BotW 2 is in active development. Anyone got some juicy details?

I don't know any more details than that one trailer released two years ago (feels like five years ago) but I know that I need BotW 2 in my life. The first game has been so incredibly impactful to me. There are only one or two games I can say I enjoyed playing as much. I wish we knew more about it at this point. I'd say we're about due for an update on it.

Wasn't the trailer just a little over one year ago? I thought it was E3 2019.

Mom does not understand video game development cycles and video game development hype machines. She saw a trailer last year; shouldn't that mean it should be done by now?

Not much to add other than agreement, but boy howdy. Finally played through it last year and it's the only game I've played in my (at this point, two-decades-strong) adult life that felt just as magical as games did when I was a kid. Definitely hadn't thought that possible.

Oddly enough, one of the games from childhood that had the most magical feelings was Zelda II, which I played through before LoZ. I mentioned this on Olde TT but despite the jankiness, Zelda II gave me this feeling of immense epicness; for example, you could see a PALACE across the mountains to the south from the starting point! What on earth could be there? BOTW gave me that same sense of wonder and curiosity when looking into the distance, just thinking about the possibilities on the horizon.

Sorry to ramble, but I'm excited about the sequel to say the least. I won't hold my breath for a repeat of that "magical" experience - doing so could lead to disappointment - but I'd certainly love to have it happen again.

Finally got around to playing the Breath of the Wild DLC, and the Obliterator section is certainly an awkward way to jump back into something I haven’t played in nearly three years.

honestly still kind of shaken by that tweet that pointed out the hyrule castle interior music in breath of the wild plays the "down to one heart" beep under the zelda's lullaby parts because she's indeed down to her final heart

I mean it’s been a decade since then, so I get what she’s saying.

For the past month or so, I've been diving deep into Breath of the Wild. I finally got to the "end" of the game last night where I explored a heck of a lot of Hyrule Castle and now I just have to fight Calamity Ganon and finish whatever side quests I feel like.

I've just been blown away at how much I'm enjoying this game. I don't have the best track record with open world games -- either I get completely enraptured with it and get 100% completion (Arkham City), or I burn out after a while and the whole game starts to feel like a chore (any Assassin's Creed I've played). But there's something special about Nintendo's approach to the genre here and it's just wonderful.

I can't even anticipate what a direct sequel will be like, but I do have some pretty high expectations for it. The track record for direct Zelda sequels is also a lot for BotW2 to live up to: Majora's Mask and Link Between Worlds are both such strong statements, as direct sequels that twist around what a Zelda game can be like while still clearly being "a sequel." The speculative possibilities for BotW 2 are seemingly endless.

Some mad scientist remade the Zelda games you always wanted to play but were too ashamed to admit it, Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon using assets from the original games. And they are giving them away for free:

I guess CD-i emulation isn't very good so this might be a good way to try these games if you're curious about them.

Started replaying BotW recently. So far, in terms of major plot progression I’ve discovered both Slate Labs and found the Master Sword (nowhere near being able to use it, though).

Either something was changed since the last time I played, or it’s a regional thing, but enemies seem to be ranking up much faster than the last time I played. Nearly every monster group I’ve come across has been mostly Black, which is very treacherous when you’ve only got 6 hearts

While my cousin and I have been playing Age of Calamity (well he plays I just watch but I’m invested, dammit!) one thing has really stuck with me is how much better the ENG VA is as compared to BoTW.

I played with the ENG dub on because Zelda’s ENG VA was that good. But I guess Nintendo actually gave a budget for voice direction cos AoC is fucking fantastic. (Zelda got even better. If you told me she really was Zelda I’d probably believe you at this point.)

And it wasn’t like they got new VA for the characters. They’re the same VA and they add so much to the emotional impact of the story.

In addition there is a considerable amount of voice acting in AoC. There’s a big variation of battle quotes (though you will hear the same ones over and over) even.

With that in mind, I’m anticipating that BoTW2 will have entirely voiced cutscenes or even extensive voice during gameplay. I’m looking forward to it, too.

I just don’t want to know anything about it!! Other than maybe a release date, which is why I’ve been avoiding this thread in case there was news or something.

Playing BoTW without any real knowledge about it was one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

Nintendo's skill at depicting the character Zelda in an appealing and sympathetic manner increases drastically with each attempt, and the results have become frighteningly compelling. Like so much else in the series, Ocarina of Time started the process of rehabilitating her from a simple distressed damsel: she's Link's partner, she can take care of herself, they can't win without each other's help, and everything that happens is part of her plan that just, y'know, hit a snag. Half the time you're only rescuing her because she voluntarily became a hostage, and in Breath of the Wild in particular you're really just relieving her.

When in Skyward Sword they filled in the cosmology with a justification for why only one of the two protagonists is playable despite framing them as collaborators with agency, they arranged it so that traditional video-gameological activities like winning swordfights, navigating puzzle-ridden holes in the ground, doing errands for eccentric citizens, and collecting bafomdads are Link's half of the division of labor. Which, y'know, whatever. It's easier to make that sort of thing fun. But it's his comparative underdevelopment as a character that highlights the contrivance than anything else.

There's something to be said for the idea that leaving the avatar's personality vague so that no action the player can perform (without breaking the game itself) is out-of-character, but I feel like that's not the way the wind is blowing these last few years. Even before taking into consideration the demand for representation, players evidently don't prefer to inhabit the less interesting character.

I would really disagree that they haven’t been developing Link’s character and personality, esp in BoTW.

While he wakes up with amnesia, every time you interact with an NPC that has dialogue options you can see where they are taking him.

BoTW painted two young adults who were being crushed under the expectations of the entire world.

Zelda had self esteem issues, and as a result felt resentful of Link’s ease in accepting and fulfilling his destiny.

But that wasn’t true. Link was scared of disappointing people or saying the wrong thing that would cause a disaster because everyone was looking to him as the Saviour of Hyrule. So he never said anything, and attempted to look stoic when ever he was in public.

They are two sides of the same coin. Zelda is an effective speaker, and capable of bringing people together with diplomacy. Link was raised with the expectations of being a knight, not a hero who needed to raise morale of the army and nation. He was able to fight, since he had been training since he was a child. Zelda could not.

100 years later, he no longer has the weight of the world on his shoulders. No one knows who he is (outside of a select few friends who were still alive), and the dialogue choices as well as Link’s reactions and expressions reflect this. Link has a very dry sense of humour, and definitely isn’t above pranking people.

As a player character, I don’t think they’ll give him voiced lines anytime soon. He might have a softer portrait as compared to Zelda, but we do know what kind of person BoTW Link is.

I am excited to be able to see Link and Zelda interact in the sequel for this reason.

I'm playing a randomized seed of MM. As my knowledge of the game isn't complete, I sometimes need to consult the created spoiler log, which shows what has been switched with what, and learn about chests I never knew existed.

One thing are the cows in Romanis Ranch. I mean, I know how to get milk from them, but only from one (it only works at night, and only one of the cows is accessible. According to the spoiler log, I can get two more items from the cows here, but I don't know how.

I know, this is a weird question, but I find it impossible to find info about this through google (normally its not necessary to get even regular milk). But maybe someone knows how to get milk from all three cows here?

In Ocarina of Time, you played Epona's Song to get milk from a cow, but I don't recall if the same thing works in Majora's Mask. I also don't know if your randomizer would do something like changing which song you have to use.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
Yeah, that's how it generally works in MM too. Well, during day, when the cows are outside, they don't react to the song. During the night, they are inside, and one can be accessed. That one gives you milk (or the randomized equivalent). The other two, though, can't be gotten to, or I didn't find a way, at least.

And yes, it is Eponas Song. That said, the randomizer offers the possibility to randomize bottle captures (so, I guess, if you catch a fish, you might get a fairy instead - that's my guess, I didn't try it). But I wouldn't be surprised, if that could be randomized, too. But for such exotic randomizations, the randomizer is generally set to "no change".

Speaking of weird randomization effects, I saw a OoT randomized run, where every exit was randomized. So, you might exit the Kokiri Forest, and end up on Death Mountain, or something like that. That one was really weird to watch.

I'm trying to finally get around to playing some BotW before BotW2 drops. The game is lovely, but holy shit I wish I could change the mapping of the crouch button to not be left-stick-in. I am congenitally incapable of not gripping the stick harder when excited or anxious, which means every time I get in a sticky battle I accidentally crouch and screw up basically anything you might want to be doing in a battle. I'm worried that I'm not getting enough practice actually doging/parrying/countering, which seems to be the main focus of the battle system, because I just end up flailing after screwing everything up with a crouch.
