Which is apparently the same company, but they maintain seperate offices to keep the brands distinct.

TIL that crab rangoon is Trader Vic's invention. Huh. Who knew. Hooray for weird-ass fusion.

There is a Youtube channel I'm quite fond of called "Steve1989MREInfo", which opens, eats and reviews MREs of various vintages. He's eaten preserved military rations from the 1800s forward and hasn't almost died in quite a while. I think I initially became interested in the channel because of the gross-out novelty of watching a man eat 60 year old canned spaghetti or whatever, but I stuck around because he's always positive, always enthusiastic about what he's doing and offers some really interesting information about applied nutrition and food science around the world and how that's changed over the years.

That is really neat.

I like the guy and the channel a lot, and it's a fascinating journey to go through. But I'm pretty sure the guy is MAGA. 😂

(Not saying he is, and it's all based on supposition, but I mean, cmon)

The thought has crossed my mind, but I'll say this: I have watched a LOT of his videos and if he has a political leaning, he keeps it very well hidden. I've seen him happily eat rations from all over the world without any hint of racism in the videos. You see a bit of his personality in his review room and the shirts he wears but that's all MRE and 80s pop culture stuff. At the very least I would consider his videos safe to watch, even if there is (and I have no evidence that there is apart from demographics) anything distasteful in his real life.

I've never sought him out in any capacity apart from his MRE review videos so if I'm wrong I'll own up to it.

I never replied to this though I meant to. I 100% agree. Very professional, very safe viewing. They're good stuff and guilt-free. It was just amusing to me b/c I have a friend who is obsessed with this guy's videos and we were just discussing them a day before, and we both independently agreed like oh yeah, this guy is definitely probably MAGA. 😂

I just stumbled upon this guy's channel not so long ago. There's a lot of pretty great stuff in it. The guy's focus and training is in European history, so that's where most of his videos are focused on. But he's got recipes on his channel from all over the world the way he talks about/discusses history is very professional/well informed and obviously comes from a place of serious academia versus being a self-taught enthusiast. Very good stuff, I highly recommend. 💯

I will say re: the steve guy, he could very easily have gone with "steve1988MREinfo" and the fact that he didn't suggests either that he's very good at staying covert or isn't as gross as other MRE people would be

This thread getting bumped reminds me, if anyone here isn’t already reading it my Top50 Plants in progress incidentally has a bunch of food history for the 30% or so of the winners that are edible.
