3D All-Stars, Mario 35, and this FE release are all tied to anniversary celebrations and there’s no indication that limited availability windows will start being applied to regular game releases.

Ah yeah, it’s Fire Emblem’s 30th anniversary. Should have been paying more close attention to the trailer...

Yeah, Nintendo’s anniversary related releases have always been limited time deals. At first I thought the only unusual thing about this latest crop was the downloadable versions, but then I remembered Four Swords Anniversary edition was a thing nearly ten years ago, so not really.

I hope this bodes well for other Japan-exclusive Nintendo titles. Personally I would have preferred seeing this on the NES app, but that LE looks pretty nice so I have my preorder down.

Kazin

did i do all of that?

The thing with that Four Swords anniversary thing was that it was free - I can understand that not being available indefinitely, but a game where they're actually charging for? Just leave it up on the shopfront, sheesh

Since I don't feel like redoing the Fire Emblem Heroes thread, I'm going to talk about this here.

FEH just announced the next Resplendent Hero on the FEH Pass as Lucina (for those who don't know, you pay $10 a month and get some extra quests, some QoL improvements, and two free 5* Heroes that have their artwork, voice lines, and stats buffed).

The new art has been created by the same artist of the Etrian Odyssey series, Himukai Yuji, who has done other characters for the game.

The fan reaction has not been kind.

I'm still reeling from the fact that FEH's thing is fairies (feels like a weird disconnect from the lore I'm used to) but given that context I think that's very nice art. Why the backlash, beyond gamers being entitled whiners?

It's honestly pretty good except for the fact that Himukai has trouble drawing characters that look older than 12. Previously he's only drawn explicitly young characters like Fae, Raigh, Lugh, and Chad.

Also, they're technically elves (Ljósálfar), not fairies. They just, uh, look like fairies.

Is there, like, a canon to this game? Is that supposed to be, like, .... uh... Fire Emblem Awakening spoilers Lucina from a happy future where she's allowed to have a childhood that isn't so disaster-dependent? I'd be cool with that concept.

If this is supposed to be the exact same character that could be reasonably mistaken for Marth (thanks to a magical hair blackhole), that ain't gonna fly.

It's closer to her original design than many of the resplendent heroes, actually. It's pretty close to her normal outfit in different colors with butterfly embellishments. Which actually makes some sense, because Lucina is already associated with butterflies.

Compare with Resplendent Eirika, whose outfit is also based on the Ljósálfar, but which barely resembles her original getup at all:

The canon is that these characters are something like the Einherjar, plucked from their worlds to fight for the Order of Heroes of the Kingdom of Askr (some of them appear to have explicitly come from times just before their death). They often do have interactions where they talk about getting a chance to see their parents and loved ones again, though it has about as much depth as you'd expect from a mobile gacha game.

The "resplendent heroes" are updated versions of old units dressed up in the style of the various "original character" kingdoms. Here's a full list of them: https://fehpass.fire-emblem-heroes.com/en-US/

Lucina is a badass who specifically selects the yukata intended for a man in the DLC and is about fighting and practicality, not cute rainbow wings. I hadn't seen this until now and I hate it. There is no lack of boobs and cute and lace and garters in Fire Emblem, please let me have my one character who was awesome and not hyper-femme (okay there was Sully too but Lucina gets far more media time outside of the game).

It reminds me of when Disney redid the princess from Brave for all the "Disney Princess" line of merch and made her do all the girly stuff she was specifically fighting against in the movie.

It sucks to see.

I did not like that Four Swords Anniversary never got a paid release for anybody who missed it. Like, I'm grateful I got it for nothing, but a big part of the game's appeal is multiplayer.

Being a limited time promo with no online play not that that matters anymore or download play makes it even harder to get a group together than with the GBA original.

Kazin

At least you can put it on hacked 3DSs or DS flash carts, thankfully (at least I think you can with the latter, but I know I've played it with hacked 3DSs)

Weren’t they fighting day glo nu metal undead before the faerie stuff? I bounced off the game around the beginning of the ice princess/fire empire stuff so I haven’t been following it too closely...

Jeanie

(Fem or Gender Neutral)
They were more a jelly looking undead, but yeah, chapter two was the Ice and Fire Kingdoms, three was Hel and the jelly undead, four is light and dark elves dressed up as fairies, and five is starting soon and will probably be Odin and Thor, and Thor is a big booby lady. I'm not joking about that last.

I'm kinda grateful I bounced off of Fire Emblem Heroes right now. Like, I knew any story stuff was gonna be really dumb from the moment the plot was contriving reasons for its expansive cast from multiple games to fight you, but...man.

Steampunk Centaurs... huh...

I guess I should just be expecting the unexpected at this point.

In all honesty though if the last season pass 2 character for Smash Ultimate ends up being Steampunk Centaur girl there, I think I’d be okay with that.

Wow, okay. Hadn't played that in quite a while but this looks neat.

Has anyone checked out the NES remake that just came out?
