Looks good to me! It's heavy on the anime bullshit, but that's what modern FE is.

"I greet you as the crown prince of Brodia. Let's Bro down."

Anyway, if nothing else, I have to assume that there being precisely 12 rings will allay fears that people will be pulling the gacha lever for an S-tier Hector. I wonder who the 12 will be!

He'll get his chance..............another day

On the subject at hand, I'm intrigued by this game but I really do feel like the character designs are a step backwards from Three Houses (and Echoes and Awakening to be honest). It looks very pretty, but initial impressions aren't "oh wow they look badass", which is ok. I hope I connect with the cast on a deeper level than their aesthetics anyway, haha.

I really do not like that combination of blue and red on a main character, it's going to be an eyesore the whole time. But if Lyn is in it... I will endure.

I'm parked in front of the final boss of the Cindered Shadows DLC, and I'm just... lolling at its abilities and inherent bonuses

- Can counterattack from any range
- Has two separate barrier skills that reduce incoming damage
- Summons minions that heal it
- Gains obscene attack bonuses when initiating combat
- Immune to all weapons and combat arts that contain the letter "E"
- Has already fucked your mom, and fucks her an additional time every other turn
- Can get "All I Want for Christmas is You" stuck in your head at any time; effect lasts until dispelled
- Automatically lowers your favorite movie's Rotten Tomatoes score by 1% every turn; effect is permanent
- When low on HP, forces you to remember that really embarrassing thing you said twelve years ago
- Upon death, permanently deletes your Animal Crossing save file. (Your Fire Emblem save file is unaffected.)

Tomorrow, fucker!

Tomorrow, fucker!

Rocked it like a hurricane. You should have heard the noise I made when Claude got two crits in a row against the boss with its barrier down. I don't care if the neither the game nor the law recognize it officially; he is now my husband.

Cindered Shadows was fun! The battles were a little longer and required more focus than what I was used to in the base game, but aside from wanting to put together a musical montage of Hapi getting comedically one-shotted in every single mission, I didn't have too much trouble. Balthus was easily the MVP; besides being a fun character with fun abs, he was reliably useful in every map and became my dedicated wizard-punching machine in the final battle. I can easily see him and Yuri making my final team, but Constance and Hapi will require further evaluation.

The other laugh-out-loud moment for me came during the Chapter 6 cutscenes:

YURI: Told you I always have something up my sleeve.
BALTHUS: Heh, I can hear your secret plan running this way now!
[cut immediately to the loading screen, with a tiny SD Byleth running along the progress bar]

Garreg Mach Monastery faculty disciplinary report: Professor Byleth verbally reprimanded for repeatedly referring to his student Ignatz as "Big Nutz"

Disappointingly and somewhat bewilderingly, once you complete Cindered Shadows and switch back to the main campaign, the Ashen Wolves students all act like they're just now meeting you for the first time. "Oh, you must be that new professor I've heard about!" BITCH WE JUST WENT THROUGH EIGHT TO TEN HOURS OF HELL TOGETHER. YOU WANT TO JOIN MY CLASS? YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT IS "HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION NOT GETTING ALL MY BLOOD DRAINED OUT OF MY PORES VIA BLACK MAGIC, THANKS TO PROFESSOR BYLETH PERSONALLY."

Detention. They're all getting detention.

Cindered Shadows is non-canon, and in fact there's a minor detail to the effect that it cannot have happened in the same continuity as White Clouds. Explaining would be a spoiler, however.

Instead, please enjoy Bignatz:

I am so excited for this. These all look like baffling mod characters that will break the game, but if the game is made for this it must work?

Also the lack of Lucina makes me guess she'll be in disguise or something? But there's been hints of other characters that weren't in this video so maybe that's coming later.

She was definitely in the reveal trailer with her Mask on, along with some other Lords who haven't shown up just yet (Roy and Micaiah)

ME: I sure am enjoying Fire Emblem! I guess there's that FE Heroes game, but... no. After Record Keeper I don't need another gacha in my life.

I started Fire Emblem Heroes recently and was actually pretty impressed at how well it distills Fire Emblem gameplay into a mobile format. Even with the smaller maps it still manages to tickle my tactics brain cells quite well, and it has some great at-a-glance features that I'd like to see in the main series (like a color-coded weapon triangle that applies to all weapon types so you can instantly tell who's strong against who).

At least that's how it is at the lower levels. Once you get to the latest and greatest (most expensive) units they start getting skill descriptions that literally cover the screen in text to explain all their ultra powerful effects and conditions that nullify or reverse the normal rules. It pretty much ruins all the simplification the game had going on. Gacha!!

Someone please tell me I'm wrong about or have misunderstood some aspect of FE Heroes' pulling process. As far as I can tell, it goes like this:
  • There are various banners with a selection of featured heroes on each, like any gacha. These heroes are grouped into red, blue, green and colorless, based on their weapon type. So far so good.
  • I look at a particular banner and go "oh, Dimitri's on here. I like him. He uses a lance so he's blue. Let's go!" I tell the game I would like to pull on this banner.
  • I am then presented with five random colored stones. In my case it was one red, two green and two colorless. No blue, which means I now have a zero percent chance of pulling Dimitri.
  • ME: Oh... that's bad luck. Guess I'll just back out.
    GAME: No you fucking won't.
    ME: what
  • There's no option to back out of pulling, despite the fact that it is literally impossible to get the unit I wanted.
  • I force-quit the app. When I go back in, it's "oh, looks like you were interrupted in the middle of a pull! Let's get you back in there." no stop
  • ME: Okay, well... Let me review the featured heroes on the banner again so I can make a second choice.
    GAME: No. Pull now.
    ME: what
  • As far as I can tell, I now must spend orbs pulling for units I don't want, and have to do so without the benefit of being able to review which ones are available. Hope I have a good memory! (I don't.)
This seems... bad??? Like I get that gacha is predatory by nature, but this just seems like a trap.

This is what stopped me from challenging the highest level endgame content in Record Keeper. I'm sure I had the toolkit to be able to beat them, but after seven years of feature creep, the various Soul Breaks had so many features, modes, boosts, conditions and interactions that I just could not be bothered to devote enough neurons to holding it all in my brain at once for a fucking phone game. I guess I'll see how long FEH can keep my interest.

The way it worked when I played was that you could back out of a pull only after selecting at least 1 unit. But also, if you pay for all the units in each batch, then it increments your subsequent pulls to have a higher chance pulling the featured units. This increase did not happen if you back out of a pull. I don't know if they changed these rules now, but yeah.

The units in a set of five are determined the moment you spend the first 5 orbs. No blue orbs in the set means you definitely didn't pull Dmitri in that set. Them showing you the colors means you can cut your losses and back out after just 5 orbs instead of spending 20.

On "New Hero" banners, which come out once a month, they let you pick one of the focus heroes directly if you pull 40 times (135 orbs minimum, if you take advantage of free pull tickets). They usually give enough free orbs in a month to do this without actually spending money, as long as you don't use them on other banners. This is, IMO, the best way to get units, because grabbing all 5 orbs in a summoning session is more orb-efficient than sniping a specific color and you're likely to get a focus unit or two and other off-banner 5-stars along the way.

You know, I've been on record after the past few Fire Emblem: Engage teasers/trailers saying that it looked pretty bad, and I wasn't excited for it. This latest trailer actually does the opposite! I'm a pretty vocal fan of the GBA to GC era Fire Emblems, and Engage does not look like a tight, tactical experience like I've been wanting (and certainly that was part of my distaste of what I was seeing), but what I was really worried about is if this would be more like Fates where the gameplay was particularly insipid and boring. I actually like what I'm seeing of the character designs, and this looks like a lot of fun. Color me pretty excited. Can't believe I'm saying this!

they posted a trailer for the Fire Emblem Engage base mechanics and it's kind of a lot
  • you but skills from the engage rings with skill points
  • there's a in-game gatcha system for lesser rings from regular fire emblem characters. They're not full 3D models, they just use character art and give you a very small bonus to your stats. Like the Caeda Ring (A Tier) gives +1 Strength, Speed, and Luck. You can also combine lower tier rings to make stronger ones (Four Caeda A Rings can produce a Caeda S Ring, which gives +1 Strength and Luck but +2 Speed and the "If you're at 50% or less HP, take 5 less damage" skill.
  • You can shine the Engage rings. Skinship with your real Engage rings!
  • You can have allies spar to get them more EXP
  • There's a similar system to the Defense Battles from Fates where you can upload a team set up that other players can fight
  • Cooking system from Three Houses is back
  • Fishing from Three Houses is back
  • The Greenhouse from Three Houses is sort of back and expanded to livestock
  • There's this little dog thing called Sora that sort of functions like Lilith in Fates: You feed it stuff and it poops out Bond Points, which is the gatcha currency
  • You can fully pick out the clothing characters wear around the base from a clothing shop
  • There's a fitness training minigame that will boost a random(?) stat for the next battle upon completion
  • There's a fortune telling mechanic
  • Amiibos get you random things - the trailer shows Fish for cooking
  • Fire Emblem Amiibos will unlock costumes from the Emblem characters, so if you don't like the main character's outfit you could theoretically put them in, say, Lucina's
  • There's a Dragon Rider shooting game
