The Disney+ thread of ever-growing entertainment monopolies

Some day, that man is going to wake out a fugue state and be VERY SURPRISED that he's a movie star.

We already know what his reaction will be:

While Bobs Burgers is present as well, it’s only season 9 and 10. Which is kinda weird.

But that also means that 100% of Nats appearances are present and accounted for, so there’s some measure of comfort in that

Nope.

Seasons 1-8 are on Amazon Prime though. Which might explain it but I think that other Fox and WB shows are still sprinkled between them.

Frick! Then Theres nothing good about this news!

I have to swap between two streaming services like a common caveman!

Maybe more if I didn’t already buy most of the series through iTunes.

Last episode of WandaVision dropped at midnight PST. And despite being up to watch it, I haven’t even been able to start the episode yet because the D+ servers are so slammed that the episode won’t even load. Pretty pathetic their servers completely buckled under mildly increased demand at midnight on just the West Coast. You’d think this was a small outfit like Crunchyroll when new episodes of Naruto drops, not the biggest, richest media conglomerate in the world. Definitely canceling my sub after this. What good is paying for a service that I can’t even use when I want to?

I mean, you just answered that question yourself. As a longtime veteran of other similar online things like MMO or their expansion pack launches, there is no reasonable way to prepare for these sorts of load scenarios because it's not fiscally reasonable to hire 20-50x your normal max network capacity for a few hours of insane demand.

Kind of interesting to consider that Netflix's "drop eight hours of entertainment all at once" model that is often decried for murdering the ol' waterhole discussion might be a decision partially made from the perspective of server maintenance...

I have a feeling most non-Netflix corporations don't have a solid grasp on the technical requirements for robust streaming services and so they probably contract-out their apps and end up with non-optimized stuff all over the place. Disney+ hasn't been that good, but it's still miles better than HBO Max. Netflix has the advantage of being the first one and also streaming-first, which means they probably still have a huge lead on in-house technical knowledge compared to their competitors.

The thing is:

1) Netflix has a head start, yes. But Disney+ doesn't have to reinvent the wheel from scratch here. You can hire people who know how to set these things up to help run your outfit. Tech poaches talent all the time. D+ has been out in the wild for a good year and a half now, this is the biggest, wealthiest, media conglomerate in history, dealing with the single most important thing for the continued future success of their business. They should be doing better than this by now. It's also worth noting that Disney has been in the streaming business for a while with ESPN3, which has done nothing but shit the bed for over a decade. They're just bad at streaming and they have no real excuses for it at this point.

2) This is "heavy load" was pretty much only on the West Coast - which is the heart of the tech industry. And at midnight on a weeknight. Over four hours later, I still couldn't get it to work after most everyone had given up and gone to sleep. It's not like you're running a sewer system trying to plan around the Super Bowl. If just a relatively small fraction of 1/6th of the US trying to use your service brings it to its knees, maybe it's time to rethink your strategy.

Anyways, went ahead and cancelled my sub. Which immediately lost me access to my account, without prorating my bill despite only being like halfway through my billing cycle. So that's in pretty poor form. Watch how long I can hold a grudge, Disney.

Sorry to hear you won't get to watch the season finale. My family has really been enjoying the show, and we're looking forward to watching tonight. I'm a little sad the last episode probably won't do as much sitcom referencing, because my wife and I have had as much fun talking about the production design shifts as the plot!

I like the "one episode a week" thing. It keeps the story interesting and alive in conversation longer, and while it's running you can talk about it without having to watch the whole thing. If you try that with Stranger Things, chain watchers somehow have to remember what happened by the end of episode 3 (for example) to not spoil.

Yeah, I agree. Its not only better to absorb material, I feel like it makes so much sense in terms of marketing and branding. Cynical as that may sound, it won't be consumed and forgotten so quickly, which means more visibility. There are countless reasons to be BEAT level cynical/distrustful/fearful about Disney but it seems like they at least know how to keep people in mind of their carefully tended garden compared to Netflix's media dump approach.

Also amusing: We have never had live TV at home since our daughter has been born, so this has been a good education for her to understand "no, it used to be you could only watch things by being in front of the TV AT A CERTAIN TIME and you only got one episode a week and sometimes it was a rerun!"

It amuses me how little "mainstream" overlap there is between the nerdy fandom of an MCU TV show and the nerdy fandom of anime that runs on Funi, Crunchy, et al, which also "release" episodes on a weekly basis.

(Obviously not counting Netlix anime here.)

Speaking personally, I feel like someone named “Cruella De Ville” doesn’t really need any kind of emotional justification to want to turn puppies into a coat

"OK, so this woman wants to kill puppies to make a sick coat, but, and listen to me for a bit here... what if she was justified in doing so?"

True plot twist: Those Dalmatians are Pongo and Perdita's parents.

That spoiler is also not a joke.

I mean if you're going to make a Cruella movie, may as well make it as batshit as possible. Just maximum pulp inanity.

Disney already did this and it kind of worked with Maleficent. I am generally a fan of the conceit of refocusing a well known story on a villain or side character and getting their perspective.

She's named cruel devil and wants to murder puppies. Its pretty black and white; I'm not seeing a lot of grey there.
