The DC Comics TV & Movie Thread - A Thread for Talking about Detective Comics Comics Television Shows and Movies

The show comes out in a few weeks, so like, it had to have been planned all along?? I don't really get it.

Titans is going wild. This week's episode they just turned Red Hood into an incel hate symbol which is just aces. And also I'm pretty sure they just killed Dick Grayson!? Which isn't that crazy since they'll just immediately throw him in the Lazarus Pit but that's still a wild series of events that I don't think even the comics have done yet unless I'm forgetting something.

Honestly, I don't know what to even make of this. The webtoon comic is maybe the best thing I've ever read, but I have a really hard time imagining how this would even work at a live action thing.

The video was taken down. What was it about?

Oh that's not even the half of it. DC's FanDome was today and they let loose ALL of the trailers. Adrenaline posted the biggest get with The Batman (I know this trailer will turn off a lot of people, but I'm here for ANGERBAT) but there were a dozen other things that are worth mentioning as well, including:

Teen Titans Go/Super Hero Girls crossover film:
I can't wait for this one, it's gonna be fun.

Catwoman animated film:
The faux anime aesthetic doesn't do much for me, and these direct-to-video animated films DC cranks out are usually bad but I'll try it eventually.

Batwoman Season 3 trailer:
I dunno if Blaxploitation was the theme to go with here... especially considering what AT&T was recently revealed to be doing under the table with its profits.

Peacemaker trailer:
This show looks awful, and I'm kinda enthralled by it. I kinda can't wait to see how long it'll take for me to just stop watching it.

Aquaman King of Atlantis cartoon (Episode 1 is already out on HBO Max right now!)
Eff me this looks fantastic

Justice Society, and I'm here for it. Those are all (save Cyclone; if they are telling a version of the story I think they are, she is likely taking Star Girl's role) major players in Black Adam's story with the JSA. I really like that storyline.

I’m waiting for the movie about the Flash working for the IRS because he couldn’t afford to pay the income tax on his lottery winnings

Justice Society, and I'm here for it.
Yeah, I meant Justice League movie in the way Captain America: Civil War is really just a full blown Avengers movie. And also because I’d say most people who like DC heroes aren’t really aware of the JSA,but yes, JSA and I’m super here for it.

I’m watching this Aquaman Cartoon and oh my god. This is… kind of incredible!? I kinda can’t believe this exists. And Master Shake plays Ocean Master! This show friggin rules. If I had kids I’d make them watch it.

Batman: The Audio Adventures is kind of an insane thing that exists. It’s the most elaborate love letter to old pulpy audio dramas from the 40s and 50s in history. There is just straight up insane amounts of talent for a very diverse cast. I think everyone should listen to it, it’s kind of awesome. If nothing else, give it a listen to hear Brent Spiner as The Joker. He’s low key incredible. Like, maybe Top 3 portrayals ever??

This week in Legends of Tomorrow The Gang is stuck in 1924. Captain Sarah Lance walks up to Nate Heywood and says, “Nate, we need you to use your super power.” Nate replies, “Oh, you want me to turn to steel and wreck up the place?” Sarah replied, “No, your *other* super power. I thought well, of course she would need his other super power: his professorial knowledge of history! Sarah said short moment after however, “No, you’re a white man in 1924 — we need your privilege. I died inside a little.

I really miss being able to watch Legends week to week, but I caught up with Season 6 this weekend. I don't think Season 6 consistently had the stuff of the best of the show (that might have been COVID restrictions, there were a lot of completely separate stories in most episodes), but it still had its fastball when it needs it. I mean, it did end with the team averting an alien invasion with the combined powers of drug use and gay marriage.

Season 6 of Legends was probably the best Covid-season of CW shows. Lots of really bad struggles with filming restrictions were nakedly on display for all the CW shows, and Legends made the best of it. (Versus Flash that kept having to make increasingly silly handwave explanations for why Coast City was always completely empty.)

This new season of Legends is weird, and probably a step down from previous seasons, but it's an interesting experiment.

Stargirl gets an A+ for casting its voice only characters. Jim Gaffigan as the Thunder bolt and Keith David as Mr. Bones. The rest of the show was pretty great too. It seems to be hitting the light/darkness balance in a way that Supergirl and especially The Flash always seemed to struggle with.

Supergirl ends tonight.

The final season has been a bit uneven, and I think would have been stronger if Nyxly's threat and the hunt for the MacGuffins were brought in earlier, but the final half has been fairly good overall.

So what are the odds this ends with Kara either dying or being depowered?

Well Supergirl ended very true to itself, in a finale where the action and plot were kind of an absolute mess but still wore its heart on its sleeve and unashamedly went all-in on earnest positivity at the very end.

For anyone wondering how it finally ends: Mon'el, Wynn, and James arrive to help in the final battle, Kara gives a hero speech to save the day, Nyxly and Lex are both banished to the Phantom Zone (after a MacGuffin-powered DBZ fight where they both turned into lizards because reasons), Alex and Kelly get gay married, Cat Grant (CAT GRANT!) gives Kara a pep talk and she decides to tell the world she's Supergirl and live her truth, and the last scene is game night because of course it is. No Kara death, nor depowering, she saved the day and has it all and honestly sometimes a feel good ending without CONSEQUENCES feels appropriate.

Benoist was too good for this show, and the Arrowverse in general.

I just started with S6 of Supergirl. Man, they aren't hiding the Lex/trump angle at all, are they. I wish I could give the show the benefit of the doubt that it has something more to say than trump bad, but that's probably enough.

Supergirl is a show that makes sure to say all of its themes out loud, directly at the camera, slapping the fourth wall with a sledgehammer. Subtlety is a tool Bertlanti & Co long ago chucked in the dustbin. I would say that the closest thing S6 of Supergirl achieves to a long running theme that they don’t continually batter the viewer with via inspirational monologues is Kara struggling to lead a double life as a closeted superhero in some of the most obvious queer allegories I’ve ever seen. But then the finale just straight up lays it all out in front of the viewer anyways.

I thought the finale was fine. Definitely a more emotionally satisfying ending versus what Arrow got. It also felt very abrupt and bad at the same time. It very much felt like it was just gonna be a regular season finale but halfway thru production they got sprung with a, “Guess what, you’re cancelled!” and the team had to rapidly adapt their plans to also include a series finale. Very Star Trek Enterprise vibes. The whole plotting was a gigantic clusterfuck. Like, one moment we’re mourning generic boyfriend’s death and then the next moment we’re having a beautiful gay wedding. So weird.

The thing I resent the most is the how the show wrapped up Mixly’s whole story. They spent a whole lotta time dedicated to showing how she’s not inherently a bad person, just bitter at having repeatedly been dealt a bad hand in life, as the repeated victim of abuse. It was such a repeatedly revisited theme that I just assumed that we’d get to see her rehabilitated eventually because she’s a likable character. But I guess not, off to the Phantom Zone you go! What a debacle.

We’re 6 episodes deep into Young Justice S4, and this might be the best the show show has ever been. Refocusing the show on the main cast from S1 is doing wonders, and the stories so far digging into Martian society and now the League of Shadows is making the dumb stories from S2 and S3 look bad by comparison.

Made it half-way through the first episode and had to table it for now. Got a bit too nitty gritty into the details of martian politics, which was really not holding my attention. I’ll go back for it before too long.

Yeah, I get that perspective, and I do think the opening act drags a little. But I honestly loved that stuff. One of the old strengths of Cape-shit, that I feel like has gotten lost or obscured in modern times, is developing the setting as its own character. Gotham City itself is iconic and it feels like a lived in place that the Batfam has a real history with and has to live in. It's not just a disposable backdrop that could be replaced with any other backdrop and have the story not miss a beat. I watch Cape-shit today, especially some of the CW stuff where everything looks like the same abandoned factories on the outskirts of Toronto, or the MCU stuff where everyone is constantly walking around on a blue screen, and you get no real sense of place. The setting just doesn't matter. So getting a deep dive on M'arzz is fuckin' fan-tastic to me. The politics really culminates into a really awesome conclusion for that story arc. The only problem with it, is that this kind of tight focus meant we were only really hanging out with a small section of the cast, and I desperately wanted to see what the rest of The Gang was up to. But the patient will be rewarded, because this second arc following Artemis and The League of Shadows is friggin' aces, through and through.

Yeah it feels like that was the biggest casualty of the presumed 'oops looks like this is a series finale instead of a season finale' rewrites. I don't mind that Lex got chucked into the Phantom Zone, it's appropriate considering he put Kara in there and it's a good way to take him off the table without killing him outright. But everything about Nyxly's overall arc seemed to suggest she was heading to some sort of redemption. Hell the danged finale had a subplot about how she didn't want to hurt a child and even split with Lex over it (though, uh, ignore all the other times she likely endangered children I guess, like when she brought that complex down) so that this was her fate just feels wrong. I was certain Mitch was going to talk her down from the edge or something, but his heel-turn against her also feels forced and wrong. It was a mess.

It feels like there was an escalating challenge among the Supergirl writing staff to come up with the most ridiculous stuff to make David Harewood say, and it is delightful. His exposition dumps keep getting longer and more preposterous, all delivered in that amazing voice. It is perfect.

Superman & Lois is so damn good. S1 one might be my favorite season of any of these CW shows (I've still got 2 episodes to watch).
