The DC Comics TV & Movie Thread - A Thread for Talking about Detective Comics Comics Television Shows and Movies

It's just so bad. The show goes out of its way to constantly pat itself on the back for being woke and by lampshading issues pertinent to the urban minority experience. And then it turns around and decides, "You know what's a brilliant idea? Take our heroine from Season 1 - who would still be our heroine if we hadn't recklessly endangered the actress's life and almost paralyzed her during a bad stunt - and victimize her character, mutilate her, and rob her of her agency and identity." It's so bad and embarrassing. They're thiiiiis close to being self-aware, but just keep self-owning all the time. It's like some Joss Whedon tier shit.

I assume all of this was some galaxybrain shit they thought up to justify recasting Kate Kane in-universe and also scoring even more checkboxes by making a Batwoman 2.0, but like. Maybe just, run this bad scenario by some people who aren't yes-men and who will tell you this is an insulting, shitty idea? Just a thought.

On the plus side, Batwoman 1.0's shitty cop-dad is now a drug addict so that's hilarious.

So let's say I (mostly) greatly enjoyed watching the 2 available seasons of Doom Patrol. From what I know of Legends of Tomorrow, it similarly fills a niche of "crazy bananas stuff happens and everyone just rolls with it," so should I watch that show next?

Haha I actually like the first season of Legends. It tried to strike this middle ground between taking itself seriously, and doing goofy shit, that very few things ever really try, never mind accomplish.

Also, telling people to skip the one season heavily featuring Leonard Snart ought to be a crime punishable by sitting in corner to think about the mistakes they've made.

This week in Supergirl:
Brainy: "We should murder Lex Luthor."
Lena: "We can't! Because then he'll win or something."
Me: "No, you should definitely murder him."

Shower thought: It's weird to hear very stoic and serious characters like Martian Manhunter call Brainiac-5 "Brainy".

The Extent to which Batwoman has devolved into the BATWOMAN'S TERRIBLE EXES HOUR is honestly kind of mindblowing.

Like.

At this point we have the terrible Ex of Dead (BUT ACTUALLY IN A SEWER CELL AND NEVER ONSCREEN LOL) Batwoman trying to cover for the terrible Ex of the living batwoman.

I don't even know WHY terrible Ex number 1 is still around. I especially don't know why it was actually very important for her to learn Batwoman's secret identity by, no bullshit, LISTENING TO BATWOMAN SAY "GOSH I WISH I HAD MY BATWOMAN STUFF RIGHT NOW".

BEAT

(DUDE/BRO)
I just.

Ruby Rose saying "fuck you guys I quit" was the BIG CHANCE for the show to, you know, STOP doing all this stuff. To just throw away all the garbage that clearly wasn't working like PMC dad and Terrible Ex who makes bad choices! A gift-wrapped do over!

AND INSTEAD THEY DID THIS.

Also I really have no idea what black mask's deal is other than being the BAD GUY who occasionally points out that the crows are total bullshit.

Also have no idea why the fuck Alice is still around and ungrabbed despite many many opportunities to grab her.

I tried to find deep dives on why this show is bad, but if there's any actual thoughtful "yo what the fuck" official criticism out there, it's hidden behind 8 million google results for stupid assholes complaining about the existence of women.

Am I going to have to be the guy who makes the 3 hour Hbomberguy style video about why this show is a fucking trainwreck?

I am, aren't I.

This sucks.

I find it weird everyone in this thread seemingly hates all these shows. You don't actually need to participate in the product! I peaced out so hard beginning of season 4 of flash. And I've never been happier.

I still (mostly) enjoy them. I just haven't watched much this season because the cw app is a chore and I've been very busy

haha, don't do it! I see this in other fandoms like Star Trek, where the misogynists irrationally hate characters/shows because there are women in them. And then they cling onto well meaning critiques and pretend that's really the problem they have with 'em when it's not. That's all your video would end up being: unintentional fuel for misogynists to misappropriate.

LOL, I've tried quitting. I really have. But I really like DC comics. And also, you know how people rubberneck around a horrifying traffic accident and they can't look away even though they have the moral imperative to do so and move along? These shows are like that. They're such a disaster that they wrap back around to being entertaining for hate-watching.

I think you're overestimating the level of self-awareness that most CW shows have.

Greg Berlanti has a type for his productions, and it hasn't changed in decades. Switching to a cape content format just let him and his production company stick action and comic stuff in between all of the silly personal drama.

And to be fair, “Silly Personal Drama” has been a lynch pin of superhero comics at least since Reed Richards built his first rocket

Octo, I understand you don't do research, so it's okay that you missed this important comics milestone. But the first appearance of "silly personal drama" actually appeared a year before the Fantastic Four in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #49...

Jimmy_Olsen_Vol_1_49.jpg

This issue contained not only the cover's "The Fat Boy of Metropolis", but also "Jimmy's Gorilla Identity", a breathtaking piece on what happens when Jimmy Olsen uses a magical ring to switch bodies with Congorilla. The rest of comics have been chasing this one-two punch of prose ever since.

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
Well better call a truant officer because I plainly need to be schooled

Also, I thought Congorilla was a Marvel character, but I was thinking of Gorgilla.

(he/him)
Congorilla is DC, but his origins as a human (William "Congo Bill" Glenmorgan) that eventually was cursed/blessed with the ability to become a mildly superpowered gorilla is very similar to Marvel's Kenneth Hale aka Gorilla-Man. Gorgilla was, of course, originally Big Foot, but was mutated into his current incarnation where, because he accidentally time traveled and saved Abraham Lincoln, he became president.

On a sidenote, CW shows are absolutely following the wrong superheroes.
