Also they're ass deep in reshoots already. Everything about this decision seems tailored around the Discovery execs who are now at the helm deciding they don't want it and deciding a 90 million dollar write down is something they'll eat to assert their control over the future of the content being put out.

Genuinely surprised they aren't just throwing it on max like "here you go fuck off".
That's the weird thing. This was a movie designed from the get go for HBO Max! I keep hearing that the new management doesn't want to spend this kind of money on streaming movies. Which I think is fair. But in this situation, they already spent it! I don't know why they need a bunch of reshoots either. Like, the movie had advance screenings and the scuttlebutt was that they were actually pretty good. And the last time a DC movie 'needed a bunch of reshoots' it destroyed their 'cinematic universe' before it started. Maybe they should just like, I dunno, trust the talent they hire and just let them make movies. 🤷‍♂️

Movie executives have a structurally fucked up relationship with the art they fund and sell. An incoming executive won't get credit for greenlighting anything that started production before their time, but they might get blame for marketing any flop that happens on their watch. As though they had anything to do with it. Shitcanning it before it sees the light of day is simply a conservative bet from the perspective of someone who's been selected for congenital incapability to appreciate the meaning of art or the sentiment of artists. (There's a difference between a hard-nosed decider who tames muses with prudence, and just a plain old philistine, and somehow the second largest media conglomerate in history keeps choosing the wrong kind.)

I have heard that if a movie is declared a tax write-down, that they'd be forbidden from monetizing it. That means the only way it comes out is if somebody leaks it. With no possibility of revenue, there's no way they'd fund post-production. However, a director might be willing to edit their baby for free just to get something out. It's a longer shot than Zack Snyder's Justice League was, and there seem to be fewer fans (and, hell, fewer bots) clamoring for Batgirl. But never say never.

I don't respect Disney, and I don't think that they would be willing to pay to do such a thing, but even I would be forced to admit it'd be a hell of a power move to cast Henry Cavill as the Sentry in the MCU.

This feels like the most likely situation to me.

Also the movie itself probably wasn't great.

The rumor I heard was that they are going to fold HBO Max (75 million subscribers) into Discovery + (22 million) and basically jettison all original programming that's not from HBO. Sounds like a bad plan, so its probably true.

Oh hey look what just showed up in my youtube feed. What fun.

Yeah HBO Max is currently like the one good streaming service, so it makes sense that it's likely to be ruined.
I’m quite happy with paramount plus so far, but mostly because of the back catalog.

More beavis and butthead coming tomorrow-ish though!

So now that Discovery looks like it's burning HBO Max to the ground for literally no reason, the internet is digging through the receipts and discovering that Discovery's CEO is a racist MAGA nut. Going through the series of cancellations at WB over the last few weeks shows a pattern of almost all of them are PoC led shows that are getting cancelled regardless of how well they've been doing, critically or commercially. And when cleaning house at WB, all the minorities in charge got fired and the new board that replaced them was made of exclusively straight white males. So yeah, this is looking to be a disaster of monumental proportions, as a fascist nazi is taking over the second biggest media conglomerate in the world. Yayyyyyy.

Not that I don't believe you, but are there any good articles that summarizes this?

This is a good start on Discovery's CEO - David Zaslav - and his racism: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...discovery-leadership-draws-ire-over-diversity

And as for the cancellations, all you have to do is look at the shows they've cancelled up to date in the last few weeks to see the trend. They've cancelled poorly performing things, but they've also cancelled shows that are critical and ratings darlings as well. The only real common denominator is that they mostly just happen to be shows that prominently star minority leads and are creatively led by minorities as well.

And as for him being a fascist, all you have to do is just read how he talks about CNN (Called CNN a leader in "news for the left", vowed to be 'hands on' running CNN, says he wants to make CNN's coverage "more factual" and "less political" so that it can be a place for Democrats AND Republicans) and how he's stumped for Trump in the past.

The Joker being a good father and husband is the funniest joke that the Joker has ever played.

I swear that if David Zaslav takes this show from me, there will be hell to pay.

I can’t imagine Harley Quinn will survive. I’m just glad they got the season out under the wire. And it’s really great so far! My only complaint is that “Harley and the Gang trapped with the Bat Family in a murderous escape room” is such a compelling premise that it really should’ve been a whole episode instead of just 1/3 of one.

James Gunn is assuring us that Peacemaker survived at least.
I don't know how he can promise us that. All the cancellations up to this point, including Batgirl, have been sprung as a surprise, even to the people making them. You get the feeling that the creative team and the talent behind Batgirl had to learn their movie was getting canned through the media which is an incredibly bad and unprofessional look for WBD. If anything can get unceremoniously killed like that with no notice, unless Gunn has personal assurances from Zaslav himself, I don't know how he can make that kind of promise to the public.

I can’t imagine Harley Quinn will survive.
I can't either and it pisses me off. Especially when they've been syndicating the show on cable and it's been doing really well there too. The show is legitimately good and there's an audience for it. But Zaslav seems too myopic and stupid and bigoted to realize the value of continuing a show like this.

I just have to say, my wife enjoys 90 Day Fiancé, and I have literally never encountered a situation wherein she met someone who also liked 90 Day Fiancé, and then they didn't spend like the next half hour talking about all the latest twists and turns and developments on the main show or its myriad of spinoffs (I have never been able to pin down how many spinoffs this show has...). Like, people who are into it are into it, and I will not fault anyone for liking something different than me.

That said, if I was the creator or a curator of the highly written and considered Game of Thrones or DC Universe franchises, some of which have been going on for nearly a century now, I would be downright insulted to see my "universe" compared to a friggin' reality show about international gold-digging. Shark Week I might be able to tolerate.

Anyone responsible for the Harry Potter universe can get what they get.

I wish I had realized that the Discovery WB merger was a leveraged buyout when it happened. I think I would have been less surprised that what has rapidly become my favorite streaming platform was being gutted for no reason.

Yeah I knew that when it happened. I had sort of assumed/hoped that common sense might spare most of the legitimately good/popular stuff from getting the axe, but I really should have known better regarding what to expect from the people who brought us the 90 Day Fiance Universe.
