Welp. Netflix is dropping its bid to buy WB as of today, leaving WB in Larry Ellison’s grubby evil hands. It’s hard to have any level of optimism about the future of WB and DC going forward when literal fascists will now be at the helm.

At least I get to save some money now. Unsubscribing from HBO now.
 
How much worse could it be than the massacre of ideas and talent under Zaslav? I haven’t been following this mess, but I do know that things have been pretty rough at WB for a good while. Is this new guy worse?

I mean, the bigger concern to me is less "a big company runs itself into the ground" and more a company owned by a very powerful Trump backer who has turned CBS' news division into a propagandist joke now has a lot of power and resources. Also, in a merger a lot of people are going to lose their jobs, though that was gonna happen probably with any merger.

At least places like CNN will still report on something happening, even if they're sane-washing. Change channels over to FOX News where they just straight up won't even mention something is happening IRL if it disfavors Trump/GOP, leaving their viewers to live in an entirely different reality. There's a difference between titled scales, and state propaganda. And we're seeing two of the biggest, most storied pillars of the Fourth Estate being captured and added to the Fourth Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda in real time. And in case you forgot the effect this can have, just remember how Elon buying Twitter in the runup to the '24 election helped tipped the scales back then. Or, you can also just look at TikTok -- which Larry Ellison also recently bought -- and the hardcore rightwing slant and censorship that platform took overnight after his acquisition.

Larry Ellison is the 2nd richest guy in America. He's been a sociopath his entire life, and is dead center in the middle of the techbro massacre of the country, trying to remake the US in his techno-feudal image. Guy watched Blade Runner/Aliens and didn't see a cautionary tale, he saw aspirations. Zaslav is a rightwing nutjob but at least he was in the traditional mold of caring about money and keeping up appearances first and foremost. Guys like him would still allow critical media under his watch in order to make optimal money and keep plausible deniability alive. Films like last year's Superman are not going to be allowed under the Ellisons. Especially when he doesn't really even care about the movie side of things, he's in it for the raw power and controlling the news.
