The Brooklyn Nine-Nine Thread - Not the Title of Our Sex Tape

At least there are a ton of episodes to rewatch, so I can't complain too much. But just having watched the latest season a few weeks ago, it still makes me sad. This show still managed to make me laugh and I love the characters.

Oh well, as I said, a lot of episodes to rewatch.

"They are BOTH your locker." still makes me grin, every time I remember it.

Most shows would just double down.

99 just accepted that the paradox was too great to overcome and I can't hate them for that.

My wife and I love this show and it does make attempts to at least mitigate being copaganda, but I'm okay with this.

Honestly I just look forward to how Boyle wins the final heist since he's the only guy to not win it (no one counts Hitchcock and Scully).
But yeah gonna be hard to film a cop show for a little while considering "/me pointing to everything in reality" but at least they get to end on their terms. Even if all of them (something suggested from the aether) were turned into mail carriers and they handwaved how that happened all of the sudden, them being cops originally will still linger with the cast.

The real answer here is just a season-long Halloween heist, all happening on the night of Halloween in real time, none of the characters in uniform, never going to the police station. They might still be cops, they might not be, but it doesn't matter because there's heisting to be done.

I'd be a filthy liar if I didn't say a 10 episode long heist overarching plot was something I didn't know I wanted but now I know I likely will not get.

One thing that I realized just this season is, that I love listening to the actor who plays captain Holt. Specifically, I realized it in the episode, where he was with the other guy in the barrel museum. I could listen to him, tell facts, forever. It''s very sexy.

The 24 parody we might deserve but definitely won't get

Final season is August 12th. It also says that the final season takes place over the course of a "difficult year". So maybe it will be topical or maybe somehow Hitchcock and Scully have the precinct relocated to Wing Sluts.

The first two episodes aired and the show is as good as it ever was. The first episode basically is about addressing the shift in perception and the new status quo for one of the characters and its still a show that is funny with moments of tenderness. Episode two ditches the work for an episode into a character based story.

I think I heard Brooklyn Nine-Nine's new status quo for Hitchcock was designed to keep him in the show without having to be onset and I think the solution is great. I'm so glad to have this show back again even though its only been a month since I saw the last "new to me" episode.

Its not like Hitchcock was good for much more than a drop in line or two per episode anyway; he can do that from a tablet screen.

You could probably write an entire Dissertation on how Brooklyn 99's final season is at war with itself.

It knows it must die, but it dearly wants to live. It knows it's propaganda, but it can't admit to itself that all of it's characters are card carrying members of team bad guy.

It wants to acknowledge this, but it just doesn't have the heart. So we get this bizarre shambling thing that readily admits that all cops are bastards, but hopes we think highly of good old Jake and Amy and the gang anyway.

It's STRANGE to see a show do this. Every other cop show on TV dealt with the growing awareness of the insidious evil of police in America by just ignoring it or by going "Thank god we're different good cops who aren't like that."

I wouldn't call it courageous or admirable. I'm not sure I even have a word for it.

Just a hell of a way for a TV show to die.

It is 20 minutes a week of "are we the baddies?", concluding yes, and then coming back a week later to do it again.

I wonder how much of this is denial that the characters are actually horrible (while actively being horrible) and how much of it is attempting to appease the NBC execs breathing down their necks to some extent.

I mean, Primetime TV loves its copaganda bullshit so much as a reliable cornerstone of their drama blocks. Even as it becomes all the more obvious how incredibly fucked up the whole police system is, NBC still wants people watching their Law & Order shows. =/

The characters aren't BAD, but that's just because they're fictional. There is no real-world version of them that didn't get Adrian Schoolcrafted or worse.

They cannot exist, and soon they won't, even in fiction. The only question at this point is will they end as the impossible "good cops" or will they follow their supposed ideals by quitting.

I've seen the original tweet, and multiple people quoting it multiple times, but someone had an idea which was "all the characters should quit and get jobs at the Post Office and the show continues with no other changes" and you cannot convince me that wasn't the only approach to take.

I think the only way the show can end with it's cast of characters remaining "Good guys" is if by the finale, none of them are cops anymore. The show is ending. There is no status quo that must be returned to in season 10. This is the moment of ultimate freedom.

They find better opportunities outside the force, resign en masse in protest, get forced out by "normal" cops, whatever. Doesn't matter.

Let 99 die as the only cop show that realized that cop shows shouldn't be a thing, and actually acted on it. Close on the gang in their favorite bar giving one last "99!" toast for old times sake, prompting Scully to shout "YEAH FUCK THAT PLACE!"

Uncomfortable pause.

Then everyone shouts "FUCK THAT PLACE!!"

Smash to black. Produced by Mike Schur.

I am not at all confident that this will actually happen. TV shows are under a million pressures to be the worst kinds of cowardly, even when it no longer matters.

But if it did happen.

That would be pretty sick.

I liked the finale quite a bit. It wasn't the show at it's strongest but it was nonetheless a sweet satisfying bye bye to the characters I like and while I didn't tear up, Jake almost tearing up with his heart to heart almost got me.

"Did I say it right?"
"That was perfect."

Ain't nothing problematic about Cheddar-- he's a good boy.

The finale was a lot of fun, kind of lightweight, but that's honestly not a complaint. I loved the Joanna Newsom cameo.
