The All-New TT: Television Time Mini Reviews

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
I recently learned about Garth Marenghis Darkplace

It’s a mix of Danger 5, Children’s Hospital and Police Squad, except produced far less competently and it takes itself far more seriously.

I… love this

Discovering Garth Marenghis Darkplace is important moment in a young person's life, and each most find it their own way.

It’s like a Rosetta Stone for understanding memes.

It’s like when I first watched Citizen Kane and suddenly half the jokes on The Simpsons started making sense

On a much more mainstream note, I also watched the first episode of AP Bio.

I now intend to watch every other episode of AP Bio.

It’s a reverse Welcome Back Kotter/Dangerous Minds and I am here for that. And it’s also got Glenn Howerton playing Literally Dennis Reynolds again

Husband and I just finished Legion. I have never seen a show skirt by on aesthetics so completely. It’s just completely dedicated to being weird, and everything else is sublimated to that weirdness. The plot is pretty thin, and the characters pretty flat, and I honestly kind of hated the ending, but it was still so compelling to watch. Just a ton of experimental episodes that rarely tried the same thing twice. My favorite bit was how almost every psychic battle used a different framing metaphor.

There’s a lot I could complain about as well, but I don’t feel like it right now. It’s a flawed show that is better than it has any right to be.

Also, Aubrey Plaza is amazing. Good lord.

I feel like it stumbles pretty awakwardly in the third season when it gets to the point where it has to justify its own title and kinda can't really because it's been pretty consistent about trying to go with actual schizophrenia and not, like, Cybil schizophrenia as per the source material, but it's nice to see a show really just try to consistently shoot for the moon like that.

Started watching Succession. It's pretty alright. Tough to sympathize with any of these characters, but it's fun to watch them be terrible. Some of them are really annoying though.

But what I actually came here to say is that the music is great, especially the main theme. Perfectly captures the mood.

Kylie and I have been working our way through the Netflix She-Ra, and... everyone is the worst. Like, I don't know how Adora and Bo and Glimmer managed to stay friends, because they're constantly lying to each other! Also, we're about halfway through season 4, and Catra's still a cruel, inveterate sadist. Isn't she due to get started on a redemption arc? Like, she eventually comes around, right? Because at the moment, all she seems to want is to antagonize and abuse literally everyone around her.

Yeah, I have a lot of respect for it, even if I think it botched the landing.

I spent the whole second season thinking the “Legion” was the cluster of David, Lenny, Farouk, and Oliver, who all had varying levels of influence over one another for a while there. I still think that’s a cooler idea.

The final season of She-Ra honestly really bothers me. On the one hand, I do like what we got, because in a vacuum, Horde Prime is a really well-executed villain and that whole thing plays out great. And I suppose, re: Catra, if you really insist on doing the whole redemption/"love wins" thing, there really was no other way to do it than to have her whole power-seeking thing come crashing down on her with this sort of half whoops accidentally joined a cult half full on brain parasite supervillain angle as a means of hitting rock bottom and finally needing to start apologizing but "in a vacuum" is doing some real heavy lifting there.

The prior two seasons (or three if you count weird like Netflix), and the start of the last one even, had a pretty clear trajectory going on, where there was a very clear, very firm message that hey, sometimes, being empathetic and trying to see where the people who are hurting you are coming from is not actually the way to go, because sometimes your ex or your mother figure or your new friend or whatever is just straight up abusive and you in fact need to get to a safe distance even if you still have some complicated feelings there. And that's a really good message. Stop hoping Catra is going to come around in particular, is a really good message. And then they kind of abort that for reasons I'll get into in the next spoiler here, and they also kinda drop the ball with Shadowweaver too, without having that excuse, so... I am Somewhat Confused there.

But anyway, it feels to me like the show ends the way it ends because we've got some of that residual they-wouldn't-even-let-the-girls-kiss-in-Avatar energy going on, and the creative team just kinda panicked and felt they really needed to have as explicitly gay and happy an ending as possible. And I'm generally all for those, but here I don't like it since A- as previously discussed, THAT IS NOT A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP PLEASE DON'T HAVE THEM SPECIFICALLY GET BACK TOGETHER, and also because the show as a whole was already so openly gay as all hell so naturally and unambiguously that it never felt like something to even call attention to. We've already got multiple canon gay marriages. I don't think anyone was under any illusions any of these characters were straight. It just kinda feels like the show suddenly gets possessed by the ghost of another show that wasn't allowed to end like this.

Still one of the best shows period I've seen in years, but, yeah it's frustrating.

It's also kinda weird thematically on the whole like, love and friendship front how over the whole run of the series, the villains are consistently way better at being nice to each other, talking things out, not judging people, etc. and when team goodguy finally does get their act together to do the big team attack togetherness beam thing turns out whoops no don't do that don't ever do that. Not a complaint, just, huh.

Caught up with the first 3 episodes of FX's Y: The Last Man adaptation. I didn't know anything about the original comic book before this, and after reading some articles about the show, it seems like this TV show is going to be the better version anyway. Anyway, it's got pretty good promise so far, though it did take until the 3rd episode for me to finally go "okay, I see now where they're going with this."

So my partner and I are up to the last episode of Schitt's Creek, which did of course get amazingly good just like everyone said. Before that we watched Parks and Rec, before that Good Place. Now what?

(To be clear, we're also watching animated shows and SF/F stuff, but what else fills the slot of "funny people who are incredibly supportive of each other and you'll fall in love with"?)

My wife and I followed a very similar progression, and Brooklyn 99 was where we ended up next. I can understand if the whole "they're cops" thing is a turn off, but we really like it, largely for the reasons we love those other 3 shows.

Kimmy Schmidt, maybe. What We Do In The Shadows.

There's only one season, but Mike Schur has a show on Peacock, Rutherford Falls. It seems like it will fit the bill, but there are only like 8 episodes right now. And they are on Peacock.

What We Do In The Shadows.
Probably my favorite comedy currently running. I think Guillermo is my favorite character, but then again that choice feels impossible because every character on that show is the best character. Matt Berry is a treasure.

Though it's worth noting that they are both 1) lovable sitcom doofuses and 2) vicious murderers. The show isn't graphic or super violent but it's definitely a dark comedy.

What We Do in the Shadows is incredibly good, but if Kirin is specifically looking for

funny people who are incredibly supportive of each other and you'll fall in love with

then I think Brooklyn 99 is closer to that. (It's hard to call anyone on WWDitS supportive, except for Guillermo, but you'll love them all anyway.)

Ted Lasso fits the bill here, I think.

Ted Lasso is the answer I didn't think of.

When Parks & Rec, The Good Place, and Schitt's Creek are already off the board, finding shows that fit that description is tough. The vampires on WWDITS are surprisingly supportive of each other, as well as being weird, murderous, immortal sociopaths.

Thanks for the recs! I liked the movie of WWDITS so that's a good one to check out. My partner apparently bounced off Brooklyn 99 a while back, but I think she only saw a few episodes, so it might still be on the table. I've never even heard of Ted Lasso before so I'll look that up to see what it's about.

Edit: It looks like Lasso is only on Apple+? And annoyingly both WWDITS and B99 are primarily on Hulu, though they can at least be bought on Prime. We mainly just have Prime, Netflix, and Disney over here, so it's a bit unfortunate that our services aren't lining up with this batch of shows.
