Fun list. Can’t say I disagree with how it shook out.

  • Castle in the sky
  • Edge of Tomorrow
  • Back to the Future
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
  • Castle of Cagliostro
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Thor Ragnarok
  • The Wizard
  • Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
  • Jurassic Park
  • Prey
  • My Neighbor Totoro
  • Men in Black
  • Inception
  • The Fifth Element
  • The Princess Bride
  • Mission Impossible
  • Aliens
  • Aladdin
  • Life of Pi
  • Big Fish
  • White Fang
  • Casino Royale
  • Up

I think I blurred the action/adventure line a bit too much for a lot of mine, but quite a few hits. Y’all have good taste.

This top 50 was great fun and I enjoyed reading all about Johnny's adventures to find a theatre to watch adventures in. Very adventurous, this thread.

I went fairly broad with my conception of 'Adventure.' I'd prob drop some of the edge cases for the ones I forgot about like 5th Element and Bill and Ted if I were to list again. Ah well.

1 A Man Escaped (1957)
2 Jaws (1975)
3 Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972)
4 Seven Samurai (1954)
5 A Touch of Zen (1971)
6 Dragon Inn (1967)
7 Yojimbo (1961)
8 Back to the Future (1985)
9 Spirited Away (2001)

10 Peter Pan (2003)
11 The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon (1963)
12 Porco Rosso (1992)
13 Animal Treasure Island (1971)
14 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
15 True Grit (2010)
16 Blade Runner (1982)
17 Wrath of Kahn (1982)
18 Labyrinth (1986)
19 Jurassic Park (1993)
20 Pirates of the Caribbean (2003)
21 The Hobbit (1977)
22 Goonies (1985)
23 The Mummy (1999)

24 Hellboy 2: Golden Army (2008)
25 Neverending Story (1984)

  1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
  2. Spirited Away
  3. The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring
  4. Jurassic Park
  5. Willow
  6. The Neverending Story
  7. The Princess Bride
  8. Pee Wee's Big Adventure
  9. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  10. The Goonies
  11. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
  12. Star Wars
  13. The Dark Crystal
  14. The Journey of Natty Gann
  15. The Hobbit (1977)
  16. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
  17. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
  18. Guardians of the Galaxy
  19. The Spy Who Loved Me
  20. The Wizard of Oz
  21. The Castle of Cagliostro
  22. Coco
  23. Alice in Wonderland (1951)
  24. The Land Before Time
  25. Annihilation
I knew Natty Gann wouldn't make it, but I have a lot of nostalgia for it. Another 80s movie that knew kids could handle more than most filmmakers assume they can, and from Disney no less.

(he/him)
Looking back at my list, I had a really high hit rate for this one. I'm in with the TT Adventure zeitgeist I guess. To be contrary and save time, I'll just bold the ones that *didn't* make it:

01. Labyrinth
02. The Princess Bride
03. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
04. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
05. Pacific Rim - Yeah, it's SF/Action but I'm incapable of *not* including it if it can possibly sneak in
06. The Dark Crystal
07. The Lord of the Rings (Fellowship)
08. The Castle of Cagliostro (Lupin III, 1979)
09. Laputa, Castle in the Sky
10. Mad Max Fury Road
11. Star Wars (A New Hope)
12. Princess Mononoke
13. The Adventures of Baron von Munchausen
14. The Neverending Story
15. Pirates of the Caribbean
16. The Fifth Element
17. Transformers The Movie (1986) - Another stretch, but there is a lot of traveling around and meeting new characters in it.
18. Bedknobs and Broomsticks - Old-school magical realism romp, good times.
19. The Muppet Movie - Is a road trip an adventure? Sure!
20. The Goonies
21. Willow
22. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
23. The Phantom Tollbooth - Math Adventure!
24. Moana
25. Super Mario Bros (1993) - This really should've been The Wizard instead, probably.

The Muppet Movie occurred to me at one point after Johnny had already started posting the list and I've been kicking myself for it ever since. Likewise, can't believe I forgot about Phantom Tollbooth. It might have made it had I remembered. I must hide my face in shame.

One of the interesting trends I noticed was I feel there was a lot of representation for "dark" adventure on these lists (Apocalypse Now, Aguirre: The Wrath of God) but there wasn't enough consensus on which ones to make the list. One of my personal favourites, Wages of Fear, came pretty close, though. Most of these have relatively happy endings. Even one of the three King Kongs.

8. Back to the Future

Here's my list

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
3. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
4. Jaws
5. North by Northwest - This one ALMOST made it.
6. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - Surprised no one else voted for this. It might have a noir veneer but I definitely think of it as an adventure.
7. The Princess Bride
8. Back to the Future
9. The Empire Strikes Back
10. WALL-E - Man, remember when Pixar was just smashing them out of the park.
11. Toy Story 3 - Like the inferno scene was one of the most epic emotional moments of any movie.
12. Once Upon a Time in the West - I love my Sergio Leone.
13. Up
14. The African Queen - A true classic and one that wasn't available on video for far too long,
15. Star Wars
16. The Lego Movie - Man, Lord and Miller are a never lose team.
17. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
18. Wages of Fear - My dad told me about seeing this one for years but couldn't remember the title. Eventually I found a Criterion DVD and we really enjoyed it (though now I suspect he might have been talking about Sorcerer, which just missed being on my list.
19. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
20. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
21. The Grand Budapest Hotel - Damn, I want to rewatch this one now.
22. Casablanca - Yeah, it's a very talky movie known more for the romance and not a lot of action but I think it counts.
23. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol - Brad Bird's first live action film and it really turned out well. I feel like the Mission Impossible movies just kept getting better, though I miss the conceit of a new director with every installment (even though McQuarrie has just been killing it).
24. Hunt for the Wilderpeople - A great adventure comedy. Very re-watchable.
25. Baby Driver - Great movie. Too bad about some of the stars, though...

Thanks for the thanks. I loved doing it. Life got in the way of me actually thinking through the meta-narrative a bit more but it was also something I started off the top of my head anyway. But juggling this and work and studying was a bit exhausting. And it's not even like I have a TON of studies but still. Anyway, I always love doing these and I like that other people seem to enjoy them. I already have an idea for my next list for a subject we really haven't touched on too much yet but that'll wait for a while.

But as it stands, I hope people who took part here check out @Dracula and @Lokii and their list of all characters and story elements Ninja Turtles. I can already tell it's a labour of love and I hope it's one that is enjoyed by all.
