Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Rise movie was so so good. I haven't watched much of Rise, but after the movie, I'm definitely going to go back and watch them.

The CGI series is still my favorite, I feel like after the first season it really finds its footing and it a great mix of story, comedy and action with lots of throwbacks and references.

I feel like like the second Bay movie more than most people? The first Bay movie was only alright, but I thought the second one knocked it out of the park. It was like they realized it was their last chance and went "You know what? Let's just make the 80s cartoon" Bebop, Rocksteady, a much better Shredder, Krang and his android body, the Technodrome, Casey Jones? They just crammed it all in and I loved every minute of it.
Second bay movie is solid. Bebop and Rocksteady are just so giddy about being turned into mutants.

Looks gorgeous. I’m delighted at how influential Spiderverse is becoming.

Also great is the turtles sound like they’re voiced by actual teenagers, which helps with the cheesy banter. The writing seems… fine, about what you’d expect from a Seth Rogen joint. I will watch this!

Looks great! My only question:

Who is Mikey's orthodontist, and why won't they fix Raph's busted tooth while they're at it? Did Splinter cheap out on dental insurance?

Super shrill Donatello is a weird choice but I can live with it. fingers crossed they make this work, I wouldn't mind seeing it on the big screen if so.

Hate the humour in that trailer. But all trailers are bad, so I'm still kinda optimistic.

That said... getting some AI vibes from those backgrounds.

Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman

Holy cow I never thought about how perfect that would be until this very moment. "All-star cast" is not something that usually gets my attention, but... dang. That's good stuff.

Dracula

Plastic Vampire

This has been raised in discussion elsewhere but one especially glaring absence from the cast list is Shredder (or indeed any Foot Clan presence at all). This tells me that - based on his casting also - that they're setting up Baxter to be the main villain. I'm gonna guess he's working in tandem with the Utroms - or maybe is exploiting them - to build an army of mutants or something similarly fun like that.

This might seem strange if you're only familiar with the bumbling fly-man Baxter from the old Murakami-Wolf cartoon, but Baxter was much more of a threat in the original comics and especially in the 2003 cartoon.

I love the art style a lot. Thank goodness for a CG movie that feels like it's doing its own thing. I'm hoping for something deliriously fun in the vein of Spiderverse and the trailer is giving me that kinda vibe.

Shredder will definitely be the Thanos reveal of this movie at least (unless they go really cool and surprising and this is a universe either with no foot clan at all or they've already beaten shredder before the movie started)

But if they've already beaten Shredder then that could open the door for worm clone Shredder.

The vibe I was getting is CG filter over possibly live-action shots (or it could just be a filter over a model), which is fine - the style all hangs together.

Seriously. I'd half expect to see Eastman, Laird or even Jim Lawson credited on the backgrounds.
Extremely unlikely, but the backgrounds do at least pay homage to them

Huh, noticed from the cast list that Shredder isn't on there which is interesting. Probably setting up the world and Shredder will be teased at the end as the mastermind for a sequel.

Edit: oops other posts weren't showing up, this was mentioned.

It looks fun. I've realized as the TMNT threads on here have gotten more active I never knew/forgot so much about these characters, this looks like a cool revival.

The Turtle Renaissance, which I arbitrarily start with Shredders Revenge, keeps rolling.

Trailer looks good to me. I love 💕 Donatello with glasses!

Shredders absence is conspicuous. Especially since there is Bebop and Rocksteady. I'm not a Turtle scholar, but IIRC didn't Shredder create Bebop and Rocksteady in the cartoon?

Sorta, he uses mutagen brought in by Krang from Dimension X.

In the original comics, the mutagen is a product of the Utroms, a race of brain-like aliens that are stranded on Earth. The Utroms were the basis for Krang, but they were a neutral faction in the comics and there was no concept of Dimension X. Also, Shredder had no affiliation with them.

Since there's an Utrom in the cast list for Mutant Mayhem, my guess is Baxter has captured one and is forcing it to make mutagen for him to create an army of mutants.

I'm hoping we're getting an Utrom closer to the original comics. I do get tired of them being made villians. The whole point of the Utroms was visually disturbing aliens who are actually super chill and nice.

I mentioned this elsewhere but so many things add up to suggest "we are making this movie for fans of/to show people all the stuff from the comics that never made it into any other adaptations." So, tons and tons of characters, black April and Baxter, no Shredder as he was honestly killed off real early... but we still get Bebop and Rocksteady because they're not MONSTERS here (and because they got positively snubbed by that second movie).

I think there was only one adaptation where Baxter wasn't black. Someone can correct me but I think black April originated with the newest series but I haven't watched any since the 2003 series (I hear the others are really good, though).

As for "stuff from the comics" specifically TWO popular continuities; the original series and the TMNT Adventures series, where a lot of the characters came from or had a much bigger role in. I know that current TMNT comics of the IDW era have Laird involved but I think it's still it's own continuity maybe? But it does fold in a lot of stuff from all Turtles media as well as new stuff.

There is an argument that April was black in the original comics, but I don't think that's really true.

Not that I'm saying she shouldn't be black, who gives a shit. April is great in Rise.
