Talking Time Presents: The Top 60 Video Game Enemies Exhibit at the Valdez Museum of Video Game Box Art

Dracula

Plastic Vampire
(He/His)
I love Sniper Joe partly because of what I wrote in my entry and partly because they're very easy to draw. They have a fairly simple body shape, none of those pesky facial features, and a large shield which conveniently covers most of their body.

Along with Metalls and Battons, Sniper Joes are also part of a small group of enemies that carried over with clear successors in the Mega Man X series—Hogammer in X1 and Disc Boy 08 in X2.

Note that the masterlist is caught up with links in case you don't want to have to scroll through. I still need to find info on old lists but until the old archive goes up, it might be a while, which is a shame (if any previous hosts has their lists somewhere, please send them my way.)

Hi Lyrai! What...um...brings...........oh. Sure, the floor is yours.

The defacto mascot of the Mana series, the Rabite is a yellow blob with rabbit ears and a tail. Appearing as usually the first enemy you fight in a Mana game, they've gone on to gain the normal mook treatment of having several flavors, a few Superboss variants, and even pets! Cute critters, and they generally serve as a punching bag to make sure you can get a grip on the controls. Be sure to buy your oversized Rabite plush today from the Valdez Museum of Video Game Box Art gift store, offer code WILDCAT!

Here's what our donors--

Cute. Deadly. ~ Positronic Brain

By the light of the day And the dark of night We hide in our heads Keepin our dreams alive

Thanks to Lyrai for helping with this post :)

They are adorable but will take a chunk out of you if you're not careful. Then in Legend of Mana you can have one follow you around.

Rabites are summed up by the title of a random VGM remix I have on my phone: "Hostile but Cuddly". One of my fave mascots.

I never did defeat the Black Rabite in Seiken Densetsu 3. Is it still present in Trials of Mana?

In all seriousness Ixo just did this on his own and it's SOOOOOO RAD, and the proceeds will help with Finn's vet bills. I think this is the first time merch of a list has ever happened, too, hahahaha.

Yep, but that's all I will say.

the proceeds will help with Finn's vet bills.

In case anyone missed it, our favorite Gift Shop Manager has been on a special diet and treatment for crystalization of urine in his bladder. It has not been cheap, so I came up with this as means to help out with all the expense of it.

(I went with the good old “Ask forgiveness; not permission” method and just dropped it on Wildcat last night, having no clue that Lyrai was gonna make a gift shop joke. Serendipity!)

WALLMASTERS (LEGEND OF ZELDA)
WallMaster.png

#16 (97 points, nominated by WildcatJF [7], Daikaiju [15], Dr. Nerd [8], Ixo [17])
First Appearance: Legend of Zelda

Wallmasters are gigantic hand-like creatures that defend various dungeons. As their name suggests, they leap out of the walls to grab "the hero" and whisk them back to the beginning of the dungeon. In later games entered the third dimension, they acquired new vantage points to attack, including the ceiling and as a variant, "Floormasters". Occasionally their giant hand design is borrowed for a boss, but they are definitely best known for their grabby grabby enemy appearances.

Here's what our donors had to say:
The biggest jerks in the Zelda series. ~ Dr. Nerd

If I was a wall master I would hang up some picture frames or something, not whisk innocent elfs all the way back to the start.

What terrifies me about Wall Meisters (or their Floor/Ceiling cousins) is not the creepy hand itself, but that they seemingly grab Link and pull him through the masonry, through stone, dirt, sand, or whatever the dungeon was dug into, while the wee elf presumably screams all the way.

I had excluded Moblins Wallmasters from my picks for this Top 50 but I did have them at #19 #18 on my picks for top Zelda characters and enemies. Here's what I said about them for that Top 50.

me (on TT 2.0) said:
Have an interesting gimmick that makes them nice and creepy (in an entertaining way). It can be a bit annoying if they manage to grab Link but it's usually not that big of a deal (in the first NES game).

Since the warp whistle in Super Mario Bros. 3 is the recorder from Zelda 1, are the hands that randomly pull you into courses in World 8 also Wallmasters? Something to think about.

MOAI (GRADIUS)
654942-gradius-arcade-screenshot-stage-3-moai.png

#15 (105 points, nominated by Dracula [4], Daikaiju [17], Kirin [14], Ixo [4])
First Appearance: Gradius

The Gradius series is full of interstellar sights, but among the medley of robots, aliens and environmental hazards cued up from sci-fi sit the enormous artifacts of Easter Island, serving as huge cannons to pester the "hero" as they soar through Stage 3. This idea of having the Moai join this galactic shoot-em-up ended up becoming so popular they became the unofficial mascots of the series and for Konami as a whole, with Moai joining the ranks of future Gradius games and its spinoffs like Salamander/Life Force and Parodius, becoming a character in Wai Wai World, racing in Konami Krazy Racers, fighting other Konami/Hudson stalwarts in DreamMix TV World Fighters, and joining the bombing exploits in Super Bomberman R. Not a bad run for a giant head with no limbs!

Fun fact: Moai heads did not originate in Gradius, but in the earlier Pandora's Palace and Twinbee before settling into the rocky formations of the series it's best known for.

Here's what our donors had to say:
Shooting pew pew lasers at big bubble blowing stone heads in space completely sounds like a mad lib and I love it. ~ Ixo
These could have just been boring laser turrets or something. But they decided to put roppongi stone heads in outer space. Absolute classic. ~ Dracula

Left us with legends too great to ignore
Stone-cut survivors of ancient dimensions

Konami also made a specifically Moai-focused game, Moai-kun, in 1990.

Fun fact: Putting Easter Island statues in Gradius was inspired by the appearance of the Nazca lines in Namco's Xevious.

Pure trivia: The Moai's signature ring-shaped projectiles are officially named Ion Rings (イオンリング).

I love how Wallmasters are used in Link Between Worlds, luring them into breaking ceilings and pressing switches and such.
