Introduced in Resident Evil 2, lickers have become one of the de facto enemies in the series, returning in Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 7, the Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019, and the Resident Evil 3 remake in 2020.

No Lickers in RE7. Their presence in the RE3 remake is kind of a surprise, although maybe it shouldn't be: They appear only upon reaching a certain location from RE2, which makes sense. But the original RE3 didn't even do that much, instead introducing two different "new" enemy types that were just re-skins of Lickers without the tongue. So it's definitely an improvement.

You learn a lot about the rando you're playing RE5 with when you reach one of the two brief sections where you have to walk (not run) down a couple hallways and open a door as quietly as possible to sneak past an army of Lickers. It's the only part of the game where you're not rewarded for doing everything the biggest, loudest way possible, and without voice chat, it's often a big question mark whether your partner knows enough about the game or Lickers in general to pick up on the environmental clues and not to invite the hordes to come a-licking.

Shout-outs also to the green "Super Lickers" that only appear in a few rooms in the laboratory in the original RE2. It's "nice" to have such a nasty surprise that close to the end of the game.

I thought the "black licker in RE7" designation on Wikipedia was suspicious. I'll drop it from the main post.

I certainly hope you got a licker license before posting this, WC.

NU (Chrono)
48-CT-2946.png

#41 (55 points, nominated by Kirin [5], Positronic Brain [12])
First Appearance: Chrono Trigger

Nu are a bit of an enigma within the world of the Chrono games. In Trigger, they reside in most timelines in some fashion -- some friendly, a few less so (which is why they are here). As enemies, they have two headbutt attacks; one that knocks a "hero" down to 1 HP, and another that deals out exactly 1 HP of damage. Fighting them requires some effort, as they are hidden well within the game. The most memorable battle involves taking on six of them all at once!

Here's what some of our donors had to say:
All life begins at Nu and ends at Nu ~ Positronic Brain

Familiar to me, did you cross over an eternity We're both so alone, a warmth that we'd never known So stay with me, before our world starts crumbling

What's funny? Each nu has only one headbutt attack. There are nu that have the HP-to-1 and there are nu that have the 1-hp hit. In the battle vs. six you fight three of each.

Pretty sure the ones in the prehistoric era have the hp-to-1 and nothing else. You can't lose.

Nu are an enigma.

I wonder what the design process for them was. Unlike most of Trigger's bestiary, I don't recognize them as a variant of some of Toriyama's standard stable of creature designs.

I don't think I knew that*. You have taught me something new about Nus. That was new Nu information. But I guess now that I know that it is no longer new Nu news.

As long as you don't fight another enemy without healing back up.

*Or if I did then I didn't remember.

(Hi Guy)
The NES sprite for these guys always looks like a sentient stack of pancakes to me.

Fyonn

did their best!
Pancake like-likes are the best like-likes. They should bring back like-likes. A game with equipment durability seems like the obvious place for them - they could even just deal damage to your stuff instead of taking it outright.

I just realized... Our lists are back in the old forums's mail. We won't be able to post them at the end!

Time for Round 2 of "Didn't Make the Cut for a Full Exhibit but Are Still Rad":

#157 Andore (Final Fight) Nominated by Kishi #14

A swath of palette-swap brothers who stood as some of the toughest enemies in Final Fight. One brother in particular, Hugo, would go on to become a fighter in Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact, Street Fighter x Tekken, SNK Vs. Capcom Chaos and Ultra Street FIghter IV.

Ostensibly just a big tough guy...but he's also basically Andre the Giant. So he's great. ~ Kishi
metroid.jpg

#128 Zoomer / Geemer (Metroid) Nominated by Torzelbaum #11

One of the earliest alien life forms Samus Aran encounters on Zebes, Zoomers roam around terrain looking for corpses to scavenge. They don't deliberately attack Samus, but still cause enough mild grief in the early points of the game. Zoomers and their heartier cousins Geemers (a localization error that became canonized in Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Other M) appear on multiple planets, including Tallon IV, Alinos, Arcterra and the Vesper Defense Outpost.

Not too dangerous but can trip you up. Can help you get places (when you have the ice beam). They are also fun to mess with. ~ Torzelbaum

#97 Pus of Man (Dark Souls 3) Nominated by Lokii #8

Appearing to be regular undead at first, these abyss-engorged combatants erupt tendrils from its neck, drastically increase its HP and range of attack, and just generally cause a bad day for any "heroes" unfortunate to encounter them.

A regular human and then everything goes wrong. A pain to fight but so visually impressive and there’s lore implications too. This is what happens when the dark soul goes bad. ~ Lokii

MOBLIN (Legend of Zelda)
017.png

#39 (57 points, nominated by Lokii [2], Johnny Unusual [13])
First Appearance: Legend of Zelda

Moblins originate in the original Legend of Zelda and its sequel Zelda II: Adventures of Link as dog-like humanoids who sling spears at "the hero". However, as the sequels progressed, their looks have evolved. Ocarina of Time keeps them as dog like, while Link to the Past, Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild transformed them into boars. They are behind one of the more memorable memes of the Zelda universe,
"This is a Secret to Everyone"
, which is why it's a secret to everyone.

Here's what some of our donors had to say:
Good pigs, better dogs. ~ Lokii

I'll tell you a secret
Make it perfectly clear
There's no secrets this year
