Talking about romhacks!

I was adding some Master System games to my 3DS, and while I had the back cover off I added some romhacks too. Not, like, dramatic changes to any games. Just a bunch of QOL stuff.

Tetris (GB) - a hack that adds a shadow, lets you press up to instant drop, shows more upcoming pieces, and lets you hold a piece.

Final Fantasy III (NES) - an English translation, and has a button that fast forwards the game.

Super Mario Advance (GBA) - replaces all voices with sounds from the original game

Majora’s Mask (3DS) - reverts bosses back to how they were in the original game, fixes swimming, puts mask shortcuts on the D-pad, a few other things.

Mario 64 DS, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Okamiden, Metroid Prime Hunters, DQ IX (DS) - adds C-stick controls.

And I tried to inject Zelda 1 with an ips that adds a map, saving, and some other stuff, but I couldn’t get it to run (even on an emulator). I’ll just have to save a copy of the map on my phone and use save states.

They talk about TT as well - apparently our own Sky Render translated the Final Fantasy V Ancient Cave in the early 2010s. I had no idea! I still haven't played that.

There was a whole thread. Various people were helping out. At some point a weird debate broke out on whether to break from convention and call Esuna "S-Nul" that got weirdly heated.

I remember that! I thought Sky Render was back on TT but I can't seem to find him.
I feel like he ended up making a big dramatic post about how he was leaving the forums because of XYZ. But I actually don't remember if that was here or the 2.0 boards...

He came back and posted about a Harvest Moon-esque game he was working on, I thought?

This was honestly hilarious. “Hey any chance we can not have stupid spell names?”….“I’m done with this project forever”.

The whole “translate this hack in a couple days” project was super impressive to watch. I do think we all walked away not terribly impressed with the hack’s longevity in general but it was a fun diversion for that week.

That’s super cool.

I’m playing something similar, but much less dramatic. Sonic Triple Trouble - Master System Version. This was the only (normal platformer) Sonic game made exclusively for Game Gear. This hack just extends the field of view a bit, so it looks like the SMS versions of the first 3 Sonic games.

Since this game was designed for GG, this will probably make it a bit easier than intended. But still, it seems like a nice way to enjoy the game. I have seen a few glitches, notably the right edge of the screen is messed up at the end of every stage. I imagine that the larger field of view lets us see beyond the edge of the level and the hack designer just left it as is.

I don’t think I got very far in this when I was a kid, so I’m guessing this will mostly be new. We’ll see though.

Hey have you ever wanted to play Mega Man 2 but with RushJet1's remixed soundtrack without having to play the game muted and manually play the tracks in a music player like a damn fool?

Well good news everyone!

Supposedly there's one for Mega Man 1 as well but the new one for MM2 is supposed to be more faithful to the remixes or something.

Anyway, here's hoping 3 and 4 are also in the pipeline for whatever mad lads have made this possible.

Oooooooo, that should work on an Everdrive, since they do have VRC6 support. (Well, at least if you have a Famicom ED and a Famicom, because pinouts, but I do.)

EDIT: Blah.
Please note:

This patch does not currently work on the Everdrive N8 OS v1.26 due to non-standard configuration (chr-ram and 512KB for mapper26).

Confirmed that it does work on Everdrive N8 Pro, PowerPak and InviteNes.
