Heya folks, what are your favorite TTS packages? i just picked up the program and it's pretty obtuse, but i see a ton of stuff for it so i'm real curious.

Gizmos has a really well-scripted mod, and Spirit Island is pretty good, too. If you're into Arkham Horror: The Card Game, there's a pretty comprehensive mod for that, too.

Yeah, I also generally prefer it for stuff without lots of components. (That said, I've played hundreds of hours of Gloomhaven on it because I'm a liar, I guess.) Games like Machi Koro work quite well. More complex games can work, but it's a heavier lift by the module authour to smooth out the rough edges (automations/scripting can be a big help). I've had good times with the Terraforming Mars and Kingdom Builders modules too.

It works great for Gloomhaven but that's a little heavy to learn during a party!

Terraforming Mars I should get too, though.

I guess this thread will work, given the name. A quick PSA that a new version of TTS was rolled out today and it seems to have royally F'ed a whole lot of mods that use scripting. We were able to muddle through tonight's Gloomhaven game, but it was not ideal, and some Googling makes it clear that the sky is falling and everything is on fire for a lot of folks. So if you notice some odd behaviour, that's probably why!

Aw, too bad. I've mainly played Frostgrave, Death May Die, Bunny Kingdoms, and Bloodrage, and some D&D. None of them leaned too much on scripting aside from swapping hands for card drafting.

I noticed on Flumph Inc. this week that the fog of war effect Brick was trying to use had been borked since the last time they played.

Whew, that's two big screw-ups for TTS in a couple weeks, maybe they oughta cook these updates more fully before letting them out

EDIT: I just went and tested out the Gloomhaven module we were using before, as well as the scripted Lords of Waterdeep one I've been playing, and both were fine; did they fix this already?

I gather other folks have been having more immediate problems, but the stuff we saw during our Sunday night game was pretty subtle at first. Things like the move/attack values on the generated monster tokens not drawing, or them all showing an identifier of "1" even though mousing over them showed a different identifier (which is how we were able to determine monster turn order). I don't think there's been a fix yet, but maybe I didn't notice.

Tabletop Simulator is on a half-off sale again for anyone who was thinking about it but hasn't picked it up yet.

This weekend a few of my IRL friends playing some TTS, it was the first time using the program for the others and our first game (Lords of Waterdeep) went OK, after the initial confusion on how to use it, though our second attempt (at one of their recommendations, Powergrid) didn't go as well. Part of this was because it was decided on a whim, but also the in-game rules weren't as readily visible as Waterdeep and there was a lot of stopping and starting as we checked to see if we were doing it right.

So I was wondering if there were any other recommendations (apart from the games mentioned above) for a bunch of relative newbies to TTS? DnD and DnD-adjacent games, as well as most sort of medieval fantasy are all enjoyed by this group, but ease of play in the TTS format is alsoa big plus. Right now the Steam Workshop is just flooded with possibilities and I'm having a hard time finding the diamonds in the rough.

The main thing I'd suggest is to make sure at least one player is familiar with playing the game (or VERY well versed in the rulebook), and have everyone try to read the rules in advance or watch a tutorial video. It's not a great format for everyone to be trying to learn a new game in, especially early on, because the dynamic is different than at a table and there's all the TTS interaction stuff on top of that.

We had good results with Gloomhaven last year; it's a complicated game but the scripted versions of the modules take care of some stuff for you, which is useful. We've really enjoyed the official Wingspan module, which costs a few bucks. I have the Descent 2.0 module but haven't checked it out yet; that might be an option though.

Is there a way to, say, spoof other players so someone could do some test runs if a game to get a feel for it? At least for the scripted games that seem to depend on at least two players?

Yeah, we play frequently that way (we have just one computer at home, my wife and I sit side by side and we just swap player colors between turns and look away if there's hidden info). It doesn't play 100% well with all scripted setups, though, which sometimes link player count to actual people in the game, so it can take a little more manual work in some modules.

The SO and I have been playing hotseat Burgle Bros on TTS lately and having a lot of fun with it. I own the physical game, but... sometimes you both just want to lay on the couch and play a game, yeah?

I really like Descent 2.0 and Imperial Assault; Gloomhaven is excellent, part dungeon crawl campaign, part euro hand-management puzzle game; World of Smog: Rise of Moloch is a personal favorite in terms of gameplay systems, though the campaign fiction is overwritten to the point that I just made up my own scenario for a Halloween party a couple years ago (the narrative is all prologue in the official stuff, with no mid-mission story developments; I prefer the occasional narrative interruptions of Descent, so I invented them for this). I'd be happy to host a session, though probably not able to do a full campaign (got one started in Gloomhaven on the forum but it's hard to regularly block out the time needed to play when everyone in the house uses the computer). I'm most familiar with Descent and Imperial Assault, having done editing and playtesting for both.

Was it your first time playing Power Grid? That's a fiddly game with a bad rulebook in the best of circumstances - playing it for the first time on TTS sounds like it would be awful.

I had not, though some of the others did, but it has been awhile. Probably not the best choice, but we were all just browsing the workshop for something quick and, again, the offerings there can be tough to navigate.

Not to double post but I was playing TTS with some IRL folks this afternoon and ran into a weird issue. Both me and another player kept seeing this floating text on the board, but the host of the game couldn't:

sampletext.png

Up top just under the top menu buttons. It's all backwards for some reason, and it kept me and the other player from interacting with anything under or near it.

I couldn't find anything documenting what this could be, any ideas?
